Week in Review – 12 November 2017

It’s been another hectic week. After being in London again last weekend for Gollancz Fest (you can catch my write up here) I’ve been busy with volunteering, the blog, writing and trying to squeeze in some reading as well!

NaNoWriMo seems to be going reasonably well so far, I’m fractionally ahead on the word count and considering this book has a mind of its own and I’m struggling to keep it lined up with my outline I’m quite pleased I’m still churning chapters out!

I’m quite behind with reviews at the moment, I’m averaging about ten books waiting to be reviewed at any one time at the moment. So for any authors who know I’ve read their books and are waiting for the reviews, I am getting there but I’m reading quicker than I’m writing at the moment. For those whose books I’ve not read yet, my TBR is ridiculous right now and I’m reading as quickly as possible. I’m staying up until 2/3am most days reading to try and get through as many books as possible.

Next week I’m doing another radio interview about how I got into volunteering with the mental health walking group. I trained as a peer worker and walk leader to volunteer with the group, I’ll be talking about how I got to that point and how I use physical activity to help look after my mental health.

Here are this week’s book updates:

#Review: Glacier by Violet Blaze @IAmVioletBlaze @CMStunich

Description

His real name might be Saint, but he’s a monster.

His heart—if he even has one—is coated in ice. Dark. Like the blood under his fingernails.

Saint “Glacier” Nordin is the enforcer for the Alpha Wolves Motorcycle Club and sin for sin, he’s an outlaw among outlaws.

But even monsters want to be accepted and there’s a place in the club for someone like him, a man that paints with blood instead of oils.

Glacier, he’s the stuff nightmares are made of.
But I love him.

Even if he’s thirty and I’m only seventeen, even if the looks he gives me are cold hell.
I want all of him: his body, his heart … and his monster.

Review

The first thing I did after finishing the Bad Boys MC Trilogy was to buy Glacier, a spin off set within the same MC. What can I say I’m addicted! Glacier is the clubs enforcer, cold, calculating and taking pleasure from torturing people. When he appeared in the trilogy I loved him, his way of being able to scare everybody, even those who were supposed to be his friends was appealing and very attractive.

I would quite like a Glacier of my own actually, the more I learned about him in this book the more attractive he became, as we learned about his life it became clear how he became the person the club sees. But beneath that is a beautiful man and Serenity is the only person who sees that, and from a distance before he starts to open up. And do I have to mention the cover? Oooh that cover!

The problem, because there has to be a problem right? She is 17, he is 30. Now as an English reader that’s not such a big deal, an age gap yes, but certainly not illegal for us (age of consent 16). I knew plenty of girls (and guys), myself included, who dated people in their 30’s while they were in their teens. Some are still married to those people. But as I had to keep reminding myself this book is set in the States where age of consent is 18 so this is a much bigger deal there.

I love that Serenity is the one with the strength in this relationship. She pursues the Glacier, she fights for them, she has the emotional strength and looks out for them. She is an exceptionally strong young lady, and her age isn’t a question as far as she is concerned. She is in love and she isn’t going to let something like an age difference get in the way. I admire that quality and I admire that she had the strength to fight for what she wanted whatever sacrifices it required. She was a girl after my own heart.

Saying that there are times where she just needs to be loved and looked after, to be supported and Glacier does all these things and more for her, they discover how to be a unit, how to love each other and what it means to be in love together. There may be a large age gap but emotionally they are on a level and fit so perfectly together.

Glacier learns to fight for what he wants and to open his heart, something he has never done. His soul is damaged but Serenity naturally seems to know how to help him heal and feel better. She supports him, loves him and he does the same. They really are a perfect match. But battling the club, her parents, the law is a huge strain and one they have to navigate and decide if they are able to stay together.

I also loved how the background story from the trilogy was continued, although this can be read as a standalone it could also be part four of that series very easily.

This book took me through my paces, but I adored the characters, shed more than a few tears and felt so much love. I read it one sitting which given the page count is quite an accomplishment.

This is Book Three in the Bad Boys MC Trilogy. Want to check out my other reviews and links to buy? See the links below…

Book One: Raw and Dirty
Book Two: Risky and Wild

Description

The Alpha Wolves Motorcycle Club is at war.

And I’m getting ready to marry their president.

Royal McBride is wrong for me in so many ways. I feel like I’m living two lives; saying “yes” to him means saying “no” to half of who I am. And marrying a tattooed outlaw is a pretty surefire way to say good-bye to my future as a politician.

Why shouldn’t I leave my hometown and try for something different? Come Monday, I’ll decide either way: marry Royal … or leave him. For now, the cartel is closing in and nobody’s safe—not even the president of the Alpha Wolves MC. But I know I’ll do whatever it takes to save him, whether it means picking up a pistol or dealing with the FBI.

I knew getting involved with Royal was a bad idea, but losing him might just kill me.

The future mayor of Trinidad … married to a one-percenter.
Why the hell not?

Review

Lyric has agreed to marry Royal but she’s still torn between him and her political career, while it feels like she’s being a bit flighty she has only known the guy a few weeks so it’s understandable. She gives herself an ultimatum, to decide one way or another by the approaching Monday. To either go through with the wedding and marry the love of her life and give up politics or to leave for Washington DC and never see him again.

Now personally, given how well their connection was written, feeling like that I would have thought leaving would break me into little pieces, but this is one of the first times I thought one of my binge reading obsessions was not going to end in a happily ever after, I believed all the way through this book that Lyric was leaving and all was going to end badly, Royal would be left a broken man and nothing would be good again.

Each turn of the page broke my heart a little bit more and I had such strong feelings of anger towards Lyric and such strong feelings of love for Royal that I started to think these people were real (oh, they are real?…that’s OK then!). Reading this book wasn’t hopeful with this wonderful couple slowly tearing apart and the club at war and it looking likely Royal might end up killed at any second I was feeling downright hopeless but still I couldn’t put the book down.

Other members of the club started to become prominent through this book and I became particularly enamoured with Glacier the clubs enforcer who’s cold and calloused approach to killing was really attractive (Yes, you know already I’m very sick and twisted!), and Smoky their Seargent at Arms who has cute ginger hair (I added the cute) and is incredibly efficient at his job.

How does it end? You’ll have to read to find out but it’s a bike ride and a half I can promise you!

#Review: Risky and Wild by Violet Blaze @IAmVioletBlaze @CMStunich

This is Book Two in the Bad Boys MC Series check out my review of Book One: Raw and Dirty Here.

Description

The Alpha Wolves Motorcycle Club President wants me for his old lady.

Like that could ever happen.

Royal McBride is a total a-hole. He’s rude, impulsive, and the rest of his club hates me. Of course, the man in question has a lethal swagger, a sinful smirk, and a British accent that melts my lacy crotchless panties. Plus, the guy’s got timber wolves as pets and lives in a Victorian house by the sea.

How could I say no to that?

But I can never forget that he’s the head of a criminal organization that’s in trouble with both the FBI and a rival MC. If I thought things were bad before, they’re about to get worse. Danger is in his job description; outlaw is his whole life.

A turf war between two clubs is no place for the mayor’s daughter; in the tattooed arms of the man in charge feels exactly like where I belong.

Falling into bed with him was a big mistake; falling in love with him could be deadly.

A motorcycle club president … an aspiring politician.
There’s no way in hell this is going to work.

Review

Lyric has fallen for Royal the hot and rugged president of the Alpha Wolves MC. But she still wants her career, the career she’s worked her backside off for, a backside that Royal really likes by the way! Add to that the club hates her, the old ladies really hate her and things aren’t looking so great for this new couple.

With a rival club really stirring things up and everyone in danger things are just getting worse and Royal’s attention is split between his woman and the club at the worst possible time. Lyric meanwhile just can’t decide what to do for the best, until she does decide.

I was swept along with this, I read this immediately after the first book, and was well and truly on their bike. I was eating, drinking, breathing them by this point and just needed to know what they were doing, why they were doing it and what they were going to do to get through it…together.

I spent so much time gasping, shaking my head, screeching, screaming, and generally telling them both off that I’m surprised I came out of the book without needing therapy.

The sexual scenes are smokin’ but I wouldn’t expect anything else at this point, and I love how imaginative Blaze is coming up with new places and ways for them to come together to keep the reading interesting.

We get to know other members of the club and Lyric’s family much better through this book which was a nice touch and opens things up much better for the final book in the series… review coming very soon!

Another slammin’ MC read from Violet Blaze, be ready to binge read this series it’s a necessity to just get through them quickly.

Week in Review – 5 November 2017 #Giveaway

I promised a Comic-Con update this week so here we go, unfortunately, I forgot my phone so there is a severe lack of photos. The cosplay was amazing and I will definitely consider taking part next time I go. It has to be said it really is heaven for a geek so many stalls full of things we live for!

We saw a Q&A with Hayley Atwell, all I can say is Awesome! And we sat in on the panel with the Hasbro Brand Directors for Star Wars and Marvel. This was just absolutely awesome not just as a fan of both brands but also as a marketer. I was totally absorbed in every word they had to say for the whole hour!

I got some great swag, including finally picking myself up a Lemmy Funko Pop which I’ve been wanting to get for a while.

I also picked up a few books, spending far more money than I budgeted for! Oops!

It was also Halloween this week. I love Halloween, it’s my favourite “holiday” of the year. Bet you would never have guessed that! It’s also my wedding anniversary so we got trussed up and went out to celebrate eight years of marriage…I’m not sure how eight years have passed but there you go!

The first teaser for a project I’ve been working on at my volunteer job was launched this week. The ironic thing given I’m pretty much running this campaign is that I’ve also got the starring role in this video, so I’ve attached it below in case you fancy taking a look. The full-length video with a full cast of people will go live at the end of the month.

Also on the subject of mental health, I signed up for the Mental Health Media Charter this week. There is a post about this here. But it’s basically a way of saying that you agree to speak about mental health in a respectful manner. Given my own experiences, this took me seconds to agree to and I’m proud to be publically supporting this charter.

Yesterday I was in London again for Gollancz Fest which was awesome. I have a pile of notes so will get those sorted and write a blog post.

Finally, I’m taking part in NaNoWriMo for the first time this year, so if you’re on the site as well do add me, BrizzleLass, and we can go a bit mad together as the month crawls on and our word count gets further away from completion!

Giveaway

I have some of the swag I picked up to share with one lucky person. If you would like some Comic-Con swag then enter this Rafflecopter Giveaway which will be open for the next week, this is international.

Enter Here.

Right, here is my bookish update for this week!

Book of the Month

Wow, where is the year going? November already! Here are my book of the month picks for October, I couldn’t decide on one…again!

Now You See Me - Kierney Scott - New CoverKierney Scott is easily one of my favourite romance authors, however, Now You See Me is her first foray into thriller territory, a genre that you all know I don’t really read, mainly because I’m a bona fide wimp and have nightmares for days (no kidding) whenever I read any of these books. But I can’t refuse Kierney Scott a reading so I dove in and damn if I didn’t love every second of this book which still felt 100% like the Kierney Scott I know and love just with a far more sinister twist. It’s also had an awesome cover change since I wrote my review and I love the new one…see what you think!

My Review

What Goes Down - Natalie K. MartinNatalie K. Martin has tackled family dynamics around Bipolar Disorder in this novel and it’s so perfectly done that i just had to bring your attention back to it. As you know I have Bipolar Disorder and this is one of the first books I’ve read where I felt the way it had been handled was completely real. There are no shiny surfaces here, it is raw and honest. People’s reactions are brutal and sometimes hard to read but that is the reality of the illness. Despite all of this though this book is beautiful and has such a message of hope.

#Review: Raw and Dirty by Violet Blaze @IAmVioletBlaze @CMStunich

Description

Make nice with the President of the Alpha Wolves Motorcycle Club.

Yeah right.

It was what my job description called for—I just never realized exactly how nice I needed to be.
I certainly never expected to find myself twisted up and tangled in the raw, dirty world of an outlaw motorcycle club … or in the sexy, tattooed hands of the man in charge.

Royal McBride is a jerk—but a jerk with a swoon worthy accent, a big bike, and big … well, other things.

I didn’t think falling in love with him would threaten my life. His life.
That we’d both risk losing everything we hold dear.

The mayor’s daughter … an outlaw MC president.
It’s a match made in heaven … a match tested in hell.

Review

Lyric walks into the Alpha Wolves Motorcycle Club confident and in control, she is the Deputy Mayor of this town and she knows exactly what is expected of her. Make a deal with the club’s President so that the town knows the club is part of the town once and for all. Then she meets Royal, the club’s baking hot President and everything goes to hell.

As a girl who spent a lot of her childhood around an MC here in England, I kinda loved that Royal was an English expat. I felt so close to him because of that and he really exudes everything you want from a biker, he’s tough, incredibly sexy, has the most amazing bikes (I’ll admit to drooling a little), and damn if he doesn’t know how to treat his woman.

Lyric is a very straight woman, she has worked hard for her political career and a man like Royal is definitely not part of her plan, in fact he could send her hurtling off course and despite their incredible chemistry she needs to decide if he is a man she really wants a future with.

Royal wants Lyric completely and will do just about anything to keep her with him, but he can see she wants the life she’s worked so hard for and realises as much as it breaks every one of his instincts he may have to let her walk away.

This is the first part in a trilogy and I will have reviews for the remaining two books coming very soon so stay tuned, even better read this one and then you’ll be ready for the next review when it goes live!

#Review: Biker Rockstar Billionaire CEO Alpha by Violet Blaze @IAmVioletBlaze @CMStunich

Description

Sold to a billionaire.
That’s not my love story; that’s my nightmare.
Dash Buchanan, lead singer of Pistols and Violets, risked his life to rescue me from that auction block.
Once upon a time, his father stole millions from my father’s motorcycle club.
Now, the business he started with that money is worth billions.
Because of that, Dash and I could lose more than just our lives.

BDSM as a weapon.
Dash would be my Dom; I would be his sub.
It was the only way to get into their club, to make them trust us so we could save the others.
I just didn’t expect to like it so much—or want it outside of our mission.

A hot rocker boy with a sultry Southern accent.
A Weeping Bones Motorcycle Club daughter turned assassin.
A billionaire auction gone wrong.

Revenge, sex … romance.
As dangerous as it is spectacular, as fierce as it is unexpected.

Review

Violet Blaze is another pen name for C.M. Stunich and we all know how much I love her books! I was instantly attracted to this book, I mean, Bikers, Rockers and BDSM I was sold.

Dash is the lead singer of a rock band, he’s also the son of the head of an M.C. and CEO of a bike manufacturer, oh yes, he also hates his Father with a passion.

Then there is Adelaide, a daughter in a rival M.C. and she’s also one of their hired assassins, seriously this couldn’t get better. Except it does when she is hired to kill Dash!

You see where this is going don’t you?! Oh yeah! These two knew each other as children before all the bad blood and pow, bang, attraction!

This book has some really uncomfortable subjects, sex slavery being up there, but it really hits the mark on trying to fight them head on. Adelaide and Dash are fantastic characters strong yet vulnerable. They discover a passion for BDSM together which is passionate and the Japanese rope bondage is, well…hot!

I loved these characters and their journey merely started in this book, can’t wait for the next one to see what happens next.
