Starting over won’t be easy. Yet Maddie sees the potential for a new home and a new career – if only she can convince her two half-sisters to join her in the adventure. But convincing Tara and Chloe will be difficult because the inn needs a big makeover too.

The contractor Maddie hires is a tall, dark-haired hottie whose eyes – and mouth – are making it hard for her to remember that she’s sworn off men. Even harder will be Maddie’s struggles to overcome the past, though she’s about to discover that there’s no better place to call home than Lucky Harbor.

#Review The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson @BrandSanderson @Gollancz

A huge thanks to my blog readers who chose this book as my TBR Topple choice for July, apologies for the delay in getting the review up, I’m really behind with reviews at the moment, as you can tell! Remember, you can still vote for the TBR Topple book I read this month here!

Description

For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed.

For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear while the Lord Ruler reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, a divinely invincible leader. Hope is long lost, until a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa in the depths of the most hellish prison and discovered he has the powers of a Mistborn. A brilliant thief and natural leader, Kelsier will turn his talents to the ultimate caper: one with the Lord Ruler himself as the mark.

Only he’s not just planning the greatest heist in history, he’s plotting the overthrow of a divine despot.

Kelsier recruited the underworld’s elite, the smartest and most trustworthy allomancers, each of whom shares one of his many powers, and all of whom relish a high-stakes challenge. But even with the best criminal crew ever assembled, Kel’s plan looks like a long shot, until luck brings a ragged girl named Vin into his life. Like him, she’s a half-Skaa orphan, but she’s lived a much harsher life. Vin has learned to expect betrayal from everyone she meets, and gotten it. She will have to learn to trust, if Kel is to help her master powers of which she never dreamed.

Review

It’s difficult to sum up my thoughts about this book without giving too much away but I’m going to try. Brandon Sanderson has woven a world where the rich and the poor have a very definite division. The rich are living a high life, some of them are blessed with powers which raise them up and give them positions of importance within the Lord Ruler’s court, the best of these, the Mistborn are rare and highly regarded. For the poor, the Skaa, life is hard, a life of slavery, of servitude. Serving the whims of the rich and the Lord Ruler, struggling for food and a roof over their head in slums.

The world building is divine, you are transported into the locations and can’t help but feel a part of each building and street as the characters move around. It’s easy to see the transition between rich and poor and there is no confusion between locations and which areas characters are in.

The characters themselves are wonderful, far too many to talk about here, but the two main protagonists Vin and Kel were superb.

Kel is in his thirties, heartbroken after losing his wife, he’s quite vengeful, but also very intelligent and not one to jump in both feet first. He has a very clever plan and he is a natural leader, speaking strongly and confidently in a way that appeals to the people around him. His charisma oozes from him and there are few who can resist him.

Vin is a young girl, only fifteen/sixteen, she’s still coming into her powers as a mistborn, but she is exceptionally gifted. We see her fall in love for the first time and put everything at risk for that. She’s very strong but struggles with trust, given she’s been abandoned by everyone she has trusted in the past, that’s hardly a surprise.

Seeing the magic use and how it’s described in the book is clever to say the use, the way the elements are pushed and pulled to make them work, at first I was a little confused but it quickly becomes easy to work out what is happening and how they are working. During the fight scenes it was beautiful, like a dance and I was mesmerised reading page after page of these wonderful interactions.

This book was absolutely fantastic, I’m very much looking forward to getting my teeth into the next book in the series.

I know he’s a shifter before I see him. As I step inside, desire pulls me under like a wave. Vampires are delicious, but nothing is as scorching hot as a powerful werewolf. I’m not sure what I want more—to have him bend me over the table, or to feed on his otherworldly energy.

I crave both.

Temptation! This is how my problems begin. I can’t trust anyone, particularly supernatural creatures. With my power, I don’t even trust myself.

I’m too damned dangerous.

New Feature – TBR Topple – June

Like many of you I’m battling between reading ARC’s and books I’ve bought for myself. As the latter list continues to grow I’ve decided to create a monthly feature to try and get at least one of those books read each month (clever eh?!) I’ve seen a few variations of this across blogs, so apologies to anyone if I’ve borrowed your ideas here. I have tried to keep this as original as possible but you know what it’s like in the land of blogs!

Basically what I am going to do is each month I’m going to pick up to five books from my TBR, they will be books which were all published that month (but not necessarily that year),  I will give you the cover and blurb, then there will be a poll, the poll will stay open until the middle of the month and whichever book has been voted for the most I will read and review.

Now as you can see I have called the feature TBR Topple, because, well, my aim is to topple the TBR!

So, here are my five books for June and at the end of the post you will find the poll!

The Gunslinger - Stephen KingThe Gunslinger by Stephen King

On his quest, Roland begins a friendship with a kid from New York named Jake, encounters an alluring woman and faces an agonising choice between damnation and salvation as he pursues the Man in Black.

Green Sky & Sparks - Kate CoeGreen Sky & Sparks by Kate Coe
In a world of magic, wind, and electricity, Catter Jeck is offered the chance to explore a myth. Travelling from city to city, his search for the centre of the magic catches others in its coils. When the Lord Heir of Meton offers to continue the search in his flying machine, the consequences of their crash – and Toru’s accidental link to a dying Healer – suddenly become of central importance to all of their lives.

Within hours, she is ripped from the comfort of her home, set on a desert trek, and ordered to fight for her place among the rajah’s ninety-nine wives and numerous courtesans. He was just what I lacked a beautiful distraction.

At six-foot-two, with ebony hair, storm gray eyes, and a smile that
could only hide an agenda, I knew he was trouble. And for the first
time in my life, a little trouble was just what I needed.

No. What I wanted.

It wasn’t like I’d ever marry the guy.
Until I did.

What I thought would be my happily ever after, was only the beginning.

Cal has a secret. One that makes loving him come with a price, and
being his wife cost more than I bargained for.

The Vampire's Mail Order Bride - Kristen PainterThe Vampire’s Mail Order Bride by Kristen Painter
Welcome to Nocturne Falls, the town that celebrates Halloween 365 days a year.

The tourists think it’s all a show: the vampires, the werewolves, the witches, the occasional gargoyle flying through the sky. But the supernaturals populating the town know better.

Living in Nocturne Falls means being yourself. Fangs, fur, and all.

After seeing her maybe-mobster boss murder a guy, Delaney James assumes a new identity and pretends to be a mail order bride. She finds her groom-to-be living in a town that celebrates Halloween every day. Weird. But not as weird as what she doesn’t know. Her groom-to-be is a 400-year-old vampire.

Hugh Ellingham has only agreed to the arranged set up to make his overbearing grandmother happy. In thirty days, whatever bridezilla shows up at his door will be escorted right back out. His past means love is no longer an option. Not if the woman’s going to have a future. Except he never counted on Delaney and falling in love for real.

Too bad both of them are keeping some mighty big secrets…
