Week in Review – 1 April 2018

Hi Guys,

For those who celebrate it, Happy Easter.

I saw the psychiatrist this week, have a plan for med changes the first of which has been implemented already so I have everything crossed that by this time next month things will be feeling a bit more ‘normal’.

I’ve had something of a nightmare with getting my DVLA medical carried out the health centre they assigned me to, to get it done have been nothing short of imbeciles and it’s looking like I may lose my driving licence just because the medical hasn’t been done in the correct timeframe, completely out of my control. I am putting a complaint in what little that will do.

My new feature, Unsung Heroes, will start next Wednesday. I hope you enjoy it, please let me know your thoughts and if you want to know more/take part take a look here.

Book of the Month – March

My Mum once told me the older you get the faster time goes…I think she might be right because I can’t keep up with it anymore!

Callan - Sybil BartelCallan by Sybil Bartel
Callan was a hands-down winner this month. Sybil Bartel’s naive alpha male won my heart and while I could easily line up her books for a book of the month award there was something special about this one, Callan’s background gave him a childish innocence which when mixed with his natural alpha male was just something else entirely. The best thing was that Sybil Bartel made it come across as completely natural. Combine that with the forbidden romance of falling in love with his step-sister. Damn this book was pure perfection.

You can read my full review here, but really you should just be going out to buy it already!

#BlogTour: Callan by Sybil Bartel @SybilBartel @XpressoTours #Review #Giveaway

I’ve gone back to orange which can only mean one thing, Callan is in the house again! Huge thanks to Sybil Bartel and Xpresso Tours for having me be part of this blog tour, and well all of the events related to this book launch. I’m a huge fan of Sybil Bartel’s and it’s been such a pleasure to be involved with everything to do with Callan finishing up with this blog tour and the chance to review this fantastic book.

If you need catching up on the Uncompromising series here are links to my reviews so far…but all Sybil Bartel’s work perfectly as standalone’s I read these all out of order (very unusual for me) and had no issues at all:

So are you ready to get a taste of Callan? I certainly am…

Description

Callan

I was trained to be a hunter. Growing up in the nation’s most infamous, violent cult, my job was simple. Track. Kill. Survive.

And that’s what I did… until our leader threatened to kill his own daughter.

Refusing to watch another senseless murder, I did what I was trained to do. I took his life. Then I claimed his land, and set every member free, including her. I only had one goal left. Find the sister I was told was dead.

But being a hunter in the woods is a far cry from tracking a woman in Miami Beach.

I didn’t find my sister.

I found my stepsister.

Callan - Tour Banner

Review

Callan is quite a bit different from Sybil Bartel’s other novels, while he is all alpha male he’s also naive and quite unsure of himself. Quite a hard character to get right I would guess but as with every character she writes Sybil Bartel doesn’t miss a beat. Combining his alpha traits with those more innocent traits to create a man that we just can’t help but to fall head over heels in love with.

If you’ve been following the books you will know we met Callan, as Hero, in André, the cult member who helped protect Kendall. I fell for him a little bit (OK a lot) in that book and was so pleased when I found out Sybil was writing a book about him. But to get those nuances right, a man who has known nothing but the cult he grew up in now navigating the real world, and falling in love. Damn…my heart was choking me all the way through this one.

Then there is Emily, his angel, who thinks of herself as an ugly duckling but all he see’s is absolute perfection. Except she’s his step-sister. And damn, just like that we have ourselves a forbidden romance with two of the sweetest most deserving people I’ve ever read. It was inevitible they would have to come together they couldn’t do anything else.

This went against everything we expect from Sybil Bartel, the language was toned down, it was a slow burn and the characters were far more innocent and naive than we normally see but god dammit it worked perfectly. I cried like a baby, I rooted for these two like I haven’t rooted for a book couple in ages and I WANT Callan’s form of Alpha in my life already!

It also dawned on me as I was reading that this group of people, have the worst bloody luck on the planet, when you look at what happens to each set of characters in each book they are plagued with bad luck beyond belief. It made me feel incredibly sorry for them…Sybil give them a break already!

Another winner from Sybil Bartel, I don’t think this lady could write a bad book if she tried.

Thank you to Sybil Bartel and Xpresso Blog Tours for the eARC so that I could read this early and give my honest opinion. I have already bought myself a copy so I can just read it for the rest of my life!

About Sybil Bartel

Sybil Bartel grew up in Northern California with her head in a book and her feet in the sand. She dreamt of becoming a painter but the heady scent of libraries with their shelves full of books drew her into the world of storytelling. She loves the New Adult genre, but any story about a love so desperately wrong and impossibly beautiful makes her swoon.

Sybil now resides in Southern Florida and while she doesn’t get to read as much as she likes, she still buries her toes in the sand. If she isn’t writing or fighting to contain the banana plantation in her backyard, you can find her spending time with her handsomely tattooed husband, her brilliantly practical son and a mischievous miniature boxer…

But Seriously?

Here are ten things you probably really want to know about Sybil.

She grew up a faculty brat. She can swear like a sailor. She loves men in uniform. She hates being told what to do. She can do your taxes (but don’t ask). The Bird Market in Hong Kong freaks her out. Her favorite word is desperate…or dirty, or both—she can’t decide. She has a thing for muscle cars. But never rely on her for driving directions, ever. And she has a new book boyfriend every week—don’t tell her husband.

Excerpt

She stepped back and turned to leave.

Suddenly, I was starved for human interaction. Not just any interaction, but female interaction. Two years was probably too long to go without speaking unless absolutely necessary, but it hadn’t felt lonely, not until this unexpected female smiled at me. “What is your name?”

Denim shorts hugging her womanly curves, showing off tanned legs, she paused and looked over her shoulder. Her brown hair cascaded down her back, the soft waves reaching almost to her waist. “Are you hitting on me?”

I frowned. “Hitting on you?”

“Right, okay, um, sorry.” Her cheeks flushed beautifully. “Of course you weren’t. You’re….” Her hand fluttered in the air gracefully as her gaze dropped to my chest. She gave a small, shy laugh and met my eyes again. “I’m just going to stop talking now. Have a good day.”

“I would never hit you.” The thought was abhorrent.

She stopped. “No, I meant….” Her head cocked to the side, and she looked at me curiously. “Never mind. Are you from around here?”

“Yes.” The compound was close enough.

She kept looking at me, but not in the usual way females on the compound looked at me. Almost six and half feet, blond hair, blue eyes, I knew I was attractive to the opposite sex, but this woman was not looking at me like she merely wanted my seed.

Mesmerized by her, I gave her a name I had never said out loud. “I am Callan.” The six letters strung together on a birth certificate I had never seen sounded as foreign as my voice.

Wide and pure, her smile came naturally and without motive. “I’m Emily. Nice to meet you, Callan.”

I had never met a female outside the compound gates. “You are beautiful.” And she was. Like the saplings in spring, she was new and fresh and full of promise.

Heat instantly colored her cheeks, and she looked away.

I frowned. “Did I say something wrong?”

Week in Review – 25 March 2018

I don’t have words for this week. It has been bad on so many levels. But I am continuing to keep pushing through.

I’ve set up a new feature and will be starting it in April. I’m trying to add more interesting content to the blog and take the pressure off of my reading as well. It will be called Unsung Heroes and will focus on people who work in the more background roles in the publishing world. I have a page set up which explains a bit more and has a sign up form for anybody who is interested.

Here is this week’s very quiet book news…

Week in Review – 4 March 2018

I’m taking a moment this week to think about a friend that I heard lost her fight with anorexia and depression this week. As the words wrapped their way around me and the tears started to fall it was a stark reminder of how close I have come to losing my life to my bipolar so many times. She was a beautiful person, with a beautiful smile and she fought hard for people who couldn’t find their own voice. We had worked together on a social media project which ran for about 18 months and despite a significant age difference became good friends. I visited her in the hospital making the trip to Wales and taking books and bath treats for her because despite being stuck in a hospital bed she loved a pampering as much as the next person. Her death is not just a personal loss but a loss to the world of mental health, she had powerful things to say and always said them well. I will miss her, I will miss talking to her. I don’t believe in heaven or hell, I don’t believe in any God, but I do hope that whatever she believed in she found it along with the peace she was desperately seeking. I understand the desperation, the need to let go and I will never judge someone for that but my heart has broken just a little knowing I won’t ever see her again.

I am so excited about this cover. Sybil Bartel’s covers always bowl me over and are among some of my favourite all-time, and Callan definitely is a cover you want to be staring at!

I’m so pleased to introduce this cover which features model, Jordan Wheeler, looking very Callan like (if you’ve been following the series you’ll know we’ve briefly met Callan already *wink wink*. The image cones from the talented FuriousFotog.

Week in Review – 21 January 2018

I know I mentioned last week that my mental health is having a bit of a wobble at the moment, I’ve reached a point now where I’m really not well at all. I’m really close to tipping into a full manic episode so I may need to just take a break from blogging for a short while. I’ve already cut back on social media and popping in on you guys, apologies guys. I’ve got posts scheduled to a certain point so if I do drop off you may not notice it straight away. I’m playing it by ear right now, and doing everything I need to, to take care of myself…especially in light of my next piece of news…

So one of the things I have had to keep tightlipped about recently, my volunteering job at the mental health charity has been converted into a paid role. I’ve been going through the process of applying for it formally and interviewing and I have now been offered the job and will start tomorrow. It’s only 10 hrs per week so I will still have plenty of time for the freelance work I have, and the blog and my writing but I’m really looking forward to getting more involved with their digital marketing.

I’ve had an interesting invitation this week which I decided to accept. I was asked to be one of the reader judges for the Your Laugh Line awards. I thought it was a fab opportunity to read some humorous books, a genre I really don’t dip into enough.

Your Laugh Line

The contest has two components. One is a Reader’s Choice Award. Readers can log onto https://yourlaughline.com/vote and enter the author and book of their choice. The author who receives the most reader votes will win $250 and an assortment of promotional help from Your Laugh Line.

The other component is an adjudicated contest for books submitted by authors and/or their publishers.  The form is available at https://yourlaughline.com/laugh-line-humorous-book-awards.  The cost to enter the competition is $20 per book. Those books will be judged by a panel of expert book reviewers. The winning author will receive $500, plus an assortment of promotional help from Your Laugh Line.

Authors can enter the competition between February 1st and April 30th.  Reader’s Choice voting runs from February 2nd to August 15th.  Books making it past the first round will be announced on July 1, second round list on August 1, and the final winner on September 1. Honorable mentions will be made for category-specific books.

So, there you have it…if you’re interested in entering your book you definitely should and if you’re interested in judging you should definitely get in touch with them, I’m sure they would appreciate it!

Right, here are this week’s book updates:

TBR Topple Winner

To Journey In The Year Of The Tiger - H. Leighton DicksonThe winner of the TBR Topple poll this month with 55% of the votes was To Journey in the Year of the Tiger by H. Leighton Dickson. I’m thrilled this book won, the last book of Dickson’s I read was incredible so I am looking forward to getting started on this one. Keep an eye open for the review next month, and a new poll in the early days of February.
