#BookBlitz: Father Figure by James J. Cudney @jamescudney4 @shanannigans81 #Excerpt #Giveaway

I’m super excited to share this post with you, I was a beta reader for Father Figure and the author James Cudney is a very good friend. I can tell you that this book is outstanding and from the outset weaves a web of mystery which is laced with romance, drama and suspense. My review is coming soon but in the mean time don’t miss out on this fantastic novel!

Description

Between the fast-paced New York City, a rural Mississippi town, and a charming Pennsylvania college campus filled with secrets, two young girls learn the consequences of growing up too quickly. Struggling to survive in a claustrophobic, unforgiving world, they embark on a journey to overcome all the pain, disappointment, and horror of their experiences.

Amalia Graeme, abused by her mother for most of her life, longs to escape her desolate hometown, connect with others, and fall in love. Contemplating an impending loss of innocence and conflicting feelings between her boyfriend and the dangerous attraction she’s developed for an older man, Amalia suffers devastating, life-altering tragedies. No matter where she turns, someone or something always steals her hope of finding happiness, protection, and love.

Brianna Porter, a sassy yet angst-ridden teenager raised in New York City, yearns to determine her life’s true purpose, conquer her fear of abandonment, and interpret an intimidating desire for her best friend, Shanelle. All the confusion stems from desperately needing to find the father whom her mother refuses to reveal, but an unexpected discovery of a journal leads Brianna to a shocking revelation about her missing parent. Unfortunately, by casting the net to find him, she’s unleashed a tragic history that was meant to stay buried and might now completely change everyone’s futures.

Through alternating chapters set two decades apart, each girl’s plight unfolds revealing the parallels between their lives and the subsequent collision that is bound to happen. In an emotional story filled with mystery, romance, and suspense, fate intervenes forcing someone to make a dreadful decision that will leave permanent scars.

Excerpt

As Amalia leaned in toward Carter expecting him to reach for it with his hand, a devilish gleam in his eyes appeared. “You’re not gonna try to pull me in, are you?” She suppressed a wary giggle deep in her gut. Or maybe it was excitement. She wasn’t sure.

“Did you want to come in the water with me?”

Amalia pulled her bottom lip inside her mouth, running her top teeth over it, contemplating how to respond. “I don’t have a swimsuit.” She lifted her hand in his direction, her fingers still nimbly holding a small piece of the sandwich. “Here, take it.”

Carter raised himself a few inches higher and brought his mouth to her impatiently waiting fingers. His full lips gently sealed the temporarily open gap between them. Amalia’s hand, uncertain what he was doing, twitched. Carter reached up with his right arm while his other held his body against the dock. He enveloped her hand with his, steadying her fingers near his lips as he slipped the morsel in his mouth. Swallowing the length of her index finger and thumb, he pulled back with delicate ease. When he reached the tip of her fingers, he paused and immersed himself in her eyes. “You taste delicious.” Carter blinked in slow motion for what could have been thirty seconds but had barely been two or three.

“You mean the sandwich does.” Amalia traced her finger against the soft patch of skin above his chin. His face was as smooth as her own flesh. A shiver meandered the curves of her dampening back.

“If you say so.” Carter pulled himself fully out of the water landing near the other side of the dock. Barely two feet separated them, but he was careful not to drip any water on her a second time.

As he laid across the wooden planks dropping a handful of chips in his mouth, Amalia’s eyes lingered on his torso noticing not a single spot of hair on his chest or stomach. But Carter didn’t have a stomach. He had a set of eight curved ridges that spanned the distance from his sternum to the top of his black trunks, a solid washboard of muscle. His dark swimsuit highlighted a sharp contrast to his golden skin leaving her increasingly curious about what lurked beneath the trunks. She’d noticed other guys without their shirts, but none resembled Carter. Her hand quivered at the thought of his body nestled against hers. Amalia closed her eyes, then forced herself to look away, certain she shouldn’t extend the reach of her fingers to his flesh.

“How’s the water?” She stared in the opposite direction fumbling with the button on her blouse. The heat had begun to break down her barriers. Amalia considered taking off her shoes and dipping her feet into the lake. There wasn’t any danger in showing…

About James J. Cudney

James Cudney - Author Image

James is my given name; most call me Jay. I grew up on Long Island and currently live in New York City, but I’ve traveled all across the US (and various parts of the world). After college, I spent 15 years working in technology and business operations in the sports, entertainment and media industries. Although I enjoyed my job, I left in 2016 to focus on my passion: telling stories and connecting people through words. My debut novel is ‘Watching Glass Shatter,’ a contemporary fiction family drama with elements of mystery, suspense, humor and romance. To see samples or receive news from my current and upcoming books, please subscribe with your email address at my website: https://jamesjcudney.com

What do I do outside of writing: I’m an avid genealogist (discovered 2K family members going back about 250 years) and cook (I find it so hard to follow a recipe). I love to read; between Goodreads and my blog at https://thisismytruthnow.com, I have over 500 book reviews which will give you a full flavor for my voice and style. On my blog, I started the 365 Daily Challenge, where I post a word each day that has some meaning to me, then converse with everyone about life. There is humor, tears, love, friendship, advice and bloopers. Lots of bloopers where I poke fun at myself all the time. Even my dog has a weekly segment called “Ryder’s Rants” where he complains about me. All these things make up who I am; none of them are very fancy or magnanimous, but they are real and show how I live every day.

A bit of humor: Everything doubles as something else when you live in NYC. For me, it’s the dining room, my favorite space in the apartment, where more than just my cooking is on display! As I look out the windows onto a 12th floor terrace, various parts of nature (trees, bushes, flowers, bugs & animals) inspire me to write. Ryder, my 10-year old shiba inu, usually lays on my feet, growling when I shift positions too many times or when I forget to share my food! Although he’s only 20 pounds, he’s quite strong and pushy. But how else can you pen the best story possible without these things by your side?

#BlogTour: My Sweet Friend by H.A. Leuschel @HALeuschel @shanannigans81 #Excerpt

Hello Everyone, thanks so much for joining me on day one of the My Sweet Friend blog tour. Today I’m pleased to bring you an excerpt from this book and a giveaway that you don’t want to miss. Thank you to the fabulous R&R Tours for having me take part. Do check out the other blogs on this tour.

Description

A stand-alone novella from the author of Manipulated Lives

A perfect friend … or a perfect impostor?

Alexa is an energetic and charismatic professional and the new member of a Parisian PR company where she quickly befriends her colleagues Rosie and Jack. She brings a much-needed breath of fresh air into the office and ambitiously throws herself into her new job and friendships.

But is Alexa all she claims to be?

As her life intertwines with Rosie and Jack’s, they must all decide what separates truth from fiction. Will the stories that unfold unite or divide them? Can first impressions ever be trusted?

In this original novella, H.A. Leuschel evokes the powerful hold of appearances and what a person is prepared to do to keep up the facade. If you like thought-provoking and compelling reads with intriguing characters, My Sweet Friend is for you.

My Sweet Friend - Tour Banner

Excerpt

Lying is a symptom shared by the most convincing, cunning and ruthless individuals such as psychopaths and narcissistic manipulators. They have an invincible sense of self-importance and an addictive urge to project an image of power and perfection at all cost which are fuelled by the rewarding tools of charm, diversion and … clever deception.

Like anything in life, whether the skill is morally laudable or not, skills require training, effort and hard work. The danger lies in the brain progressively adapting to the dishonest behaviour and the longer the lies, the harder it would seem to be able to change the conditioning of one’s sensitivity to telling the truth. The truth and nothing but the truth or at the very least the intention to do so most of the time therefore appears to be a basic requirement for any interpersonal trust.

In my new stand-alone novella, I explore the idea that when crossing the line between truth or lie too often, it becomes a curse the person is eventually unable to shed …

#Spotlight: The Last Dragon Rider by Errin Krystal @ErrinKrystal #Excerpt

Good morning lovely people! Today I have a treat for you, it’s release day for The Last Dragon Rider so I’m sharing an exclusive excerpt. This excerpt is from one of my favourite scenes from the book. It really tells you a lot about these characters so I hope you enjoy it!

I also have to draw your attention to the artwork which accompanies it. Errin Krystal has some fabulous artwork which I’ve been in awe of quite honestly, it has been done by an artist named Ryuutsu and you can check out more here.

If you missed my review of this amazing fantasy novel last week, you can catch up with it here. In September Errin will share more about her reading habits on The Bookshelf!

Description

Trained as an elite warrior from childhood, the elven crown prince Flintathriël fights to bring a stop to a war that began before he was born. With the aid of his betrothed Sairalindë, a skilled mage and dragon rider in her own right, they must find the Book of Souls – an ancient and mysterious tome rumored to have belonged to the god Hath’Raal.

When the missing book turns up in the hands of Mnuvae, the bastard child of the dead king, Flintathriël finds himself fighting to not only save his people from this new threat but also trying to keep Sairalindë safe when Mnuvae takes over the dragons in her attempt to win back the kingdom she believes is rightfully hers.

The love Flintathriël and Sairalindë share shines pure and true, but when the smoke of the battle clears, will their hearts survive the aftermath of war or will their love become a casualty that cannot be revived?

Excerpt

“So where is this book?”

She avoided his gaze, glancing about the room, scarlet bloomed upon her cheeks.

“Sivath would not take me down.”

Flintathriël could not stop the laughter that rumbled up from his chest. “The great hulking dragon was afraid to enter a haunted marsh!”

“Please, Flint, na’vahla, we must go.”

His laughter died in his throat. She wanted him to take her into that gods forsaken marsh. The place the gods had literally forsaken.

“Do not be daft, woman.” He held up his hand when she made to protest.

“No! You will stay here. I will go, you, na’vahleth, will stay here where it is safe.”

Her golden eyes narrowed, and she leaned back against her desk, her fingers drumming an irritated tune against the polished oak. “Stay behind? You must be joking?”

Flintathriël shrugged, tossed the papers on her bed, and stepped away from the bedpost. It was worth a try even though he knew she would never agree to stay behind. He stopped before her, and her features softened as he cupped her face between his palms, brushing away the dried blood smeared across her skin.

“Flint, I am careful. I did not go charging into Gahl-Raëlön unprepared.” She always saw straight through to that part of him that worried, that feared the day all warriors in the darkest reaches of their soul did. The last day. She always saw.

He pressed his brow to hers and closed his eyes, inhaling the intoxicating scent of her. Wildflowers and sweat and blood. Flintathriël reached for a loose strand of coppery hair, letting the silky strands slip between his fingertips, feeling the flecks of dirt brush across his skin.

“Saira—”

She felt the tension in his body as he leaned against her, his breath warm against her cheek, his eyes still tightly closed. “If anything were to happen to you—”

Sairalindë reached up and brushed the silver-white veil from his face. He slid one hand up the back of her neck, gently tracing the contours of her cheekbone with the other before sliding his fingers down to work the fastenings of her riding armor.

“You are my everything.”

The Last Dragon Rider - Tour Banner

Review

So, let’s just start with the obvious, dragons! Yes there are dragons, beautiful powerful dragons. And elves, who ride the dragons. Not everyone can ride the dragons it takes a special person to bond with a dragon and become a dragon rider. Oh can you imagine? Sorry, you lost me to the land of dreams again!

Sairalindë is a dragon rider, she is also a powerful mage. Strong and beautiful she’s a wonderful character to behold she is betrothed to our protagonist Flintathriël (and seriously, how does Errin come up with these names they are fabulous?). Flintathriël is a Nuvien fighter and heir to the Elven thrown, he has hair as white as ash and is nicknamed whitey because of it. He is quite a joker and I found myself laughing at much of his antics. He doesn’t take life to seriously but he is a strong fighter and understands the threats facing his people.

Flintathriël’s sister Faëlwyn is also a fighter, in love with their commander Theron she is willful and wants to be at the centre of the action. She is more serious than her brother and more open with her feelings.

This happy family of elves are threatened by Mnuvae, she considers herself the rightful heir to the throne, she will do whatever it takes including total destruction to take it. I will be honest there were moments I felt complete sadness and affinity for Mnuvae, I felt like she deserved the throne, that she had been hard done by and that even Flintathriël was quite mean towards her.

This book has everything, there are some beautifully romantic scenes but much of this book is a full on battle and it’s quite heart breaking to see what these characters go through in such a short time. Seeing where Flintathriël starts and where he ends was devastating and I desperately wanted to rewind and see something change.

This is just the first book in this series and I absolutely cannot wait to see what Errin Krystal produces next because this was high fantasy at it’s absolute best, completely riveting with characters that attach themselves to you and won’t let go.

Sending a huge thanks to Errin Krystal and R&R Book Tours for the eARC so that I could read and honestly review this novel.

Seven Hours: Challenge Accepted by Angelina Kerner

Description

One pill every 7 hours. That could be all it takes to give Chanel the chance to finally see the world around her.

Chanel is an independent 19-year-old, despite what her overprotective mother and senator father may think. Being the daughter of a Senator comes with its own problems, one simple afternoon out with friends becomes overwhelming when they’re swarmed by reporters.

Keeping the secret of the experimental treatment close to her chest, she is able to fool everyone but her hawkeyed bodyguard, Leon, that has now been assigned to protect her.

Chanel doesn’t want a bodyguard, but will she get more than she bargained for?

About Angelina Kerner

I wish I could sit down with you and have a nice warm cup of tea or a steaming mug of coffee, but since that’s not possible, how about a cyber-hug? I love hugs and coffee, a lot of coffee.

So, as an introduction, let’s start with, “I love to read and write”. I have so many stories inside my head that sometimes it’s impossible to know what’s real anymore. That doesn’t stop me from enjoying a great novel, though. Reading and writing is not all that I love, though it comes a close second. I love dancing, needlework, spending time with my family and friends, and most of all, the holidays. That’s when my family is all smiles. Smiles are the best, don’t you think?

I started writing stories for teen girls because I started writing in high school and I understood teen girls… or at least I thought so at the time. Throw in a hot guy, romance, and drama to get the perfect hypnosis formula for girls and some boys. Later, as I grew up, my characters grew up with me. I write a variety of books for all ages, mostly fantasy and chick-lit. An odd combination? You be the judge.

Currently, I divide my time between my family, work, writing, and a lot of cats. I’m also a new mother and you get to read about my journey on my blog once a month!

Description

In the aftermath of an explosion and Homecoming battle, Julia tries to form some semblance of a routine: work, study, visit her brother. Unable to confide in anyone about her double life of being both human and angel, and fearful she’ll bring death and destruction to those she loves, she pulls away from her family and best friend.

When demons once again start to show up at every turn, seemingly bringing about her brother’s deepening depression, she demands her sword from Nicholas. Ever the stern Guardian Angel, he forbids her from using it. Isolated, she takes protecting her brother into her own hands.

Thrust into a dark world of conspiring demons, Julia is in more danger than she ever imagined possible. To stop evil from spreading and overtaking those she loves, she’ll have to seek out the one person she mistrusts most.

Enter a complex world where humans, demons, and angels collide, all battling to rule the Earth. For readers who enjoy young adult paranormal romance and dark fantasy. Fans of City of Bones, Hush Hush, Unearthly, Halo, and Hidden Wings will be captivated by this unique take on angels and demons.

When Smoke Rains Down is Book Two in the Kingdom Come series. Book Three, the final installment, will be out Summer 2017.

About Cecelia Earl

Cecelia Earl - Author ImageCecelia Earl graduated with a degree in education and has been teaching ever since. She’s a wife, a mom of three boys, and an owner of a magical laundry pile that never stops growing. She lives near enough to Green Bay, WI that her refrigerator is always stocked with cheese, and the first colors her children learned were green and gold. She’s a teacher by day, a mom always, and a writer in her sleep, but that’s okay because being an author is a dream come true. She writes angel books for young and youngish adults. If you feel young, she writes for you—whether or not you feel particularly angelic.
