Description

Daisy Jones has hit rock bottom. Or so she believes.

A cheating boyfriend, trouble at work, having to move back in with her mother, and being forced to compare her brother’s loved-up, newly-wed status and brand-new shiny house with her own dire lack of prospects, isn’t what she imagined her life was going to be like at thirty. To top it all off, Christmas is just around the corner!

Daisy, bless her, thinks things can’t possibly get any worse, but when her ancient great-grandmother persuades her to plant a silver sixpence in the Christmas pud for luck, Daisy is about to discover that they most definitely can.

And A Sixpence for Luck - Tour Banner

Review

Daisy thinks she has it all with Freddie, the job, the house, she’s waiting for the proposal then the kids. Except she finds out in the most unfortunate way that Freddie is cheating on her, then she loses her job and she ends up back with her family all on top of Christmas. When a series of unfortunate mishaps see her in A&E under the care of a rather good-looking Doctor Hartley she thinks things might be looking up.

This is one of the funniest books I’ve read in a while, but the comedy doesn’t detract from the wonderful tone of the story. As Daisy navigates the disaster of her life and tries to fix things. Her family who are a laugh a minute interfere, also known as trying to help, she works hard to find a new path for herself which will make her happy.

I loved reading about the journey Daisy makes through this story, how she discovers herself, finds new love and a future. As someone who shies away from festive reads, this was the perfect festive pick and I thoroughly enjoyed every single second of it.

Sending huge thanks to Lilac Mills and Neverland Blog Tours for the eARC so that I could read and honestly review this novel.

About Lilac Mills

Lilac Mills - Author Photo

Lilac spends all her time writing, or reading, or thinking about writing or reading, often to the detriment of her day job, her family, and the housework. She apologises to her employer and her loved ones, but the house will simply have to deal with it!

She calls Worcester home, though she would prefer to call somewhere hot and sunny home, somewhere with a beach and cocktails and endless opportunities for snoozing in the sun…

When she isn’t hunched over a computer or dreaming about foreign shores, she enjoys creating strange, inedible dishes in the kitchen, accusing her daughter of stealing (she meant to say “borrowing”) her clothes and fighting with her husband over whose turn it is to empty the dishwasher.

#BlogTour: A Little of Chantelle Rose by Cristina Hodgson @HodgsonCristina @crookedcatbooks @NeverlandBT #Review #Giveaway

Welcome to day one of the A Little of Chantelle Rose blog tour from Neverland Blog Tours. Today I have a review for you which I hope you will enjoy, if you fancy picking the book up then towards the end of the tour over the weekend of the 9th-11th June it will be on a free offer so you will be able to pick it up for a song!

Description

At the age of twenty-four, Chantelle Rose has all a city girl can expect: a tiny bed-sit in South London, a lousy poorly-paid job, a tyrannical boss, and quite a few exes added to an ever-growing list.

Desperate for change, she becomes an extra in a seedy crime film. When that leads to the opportunity of a lifetime – a role to play with a million dollars to win and seemingly nothing to lose – she accepts without thinking twice. After all, what could possibly go wrong? In any event, she´ll earn enough to buy her dream home, set up her own business and never worry about money again.

And what about love? Two men have won her heart: Robbie – sultry, silent, mysterious; and Lionel – Hollywood heart-throb, charm, wealth, adventure.

But who can she trust? Who is bent on scaring her away, and why?

There seems to be more at stake than just her heart. Will a million dollars be worth it?

A Little of Chantelle Rose - Tour Banner

Review

Chantelle Rose is a normal everyday person, she has a rubbish job, a rubbish bedsit and then she decides to do something completely off the wall and become an extra in a film. Off the back of that she ends up inadvertently becoming a nude body double in Hollywood and her life becomes completely surreal.

Having met two men one, Robbie, in a sleepy Kent village where she decides she’s going to buy a house and live out the rest of her existence; and the other Lionel in the big lights of Hollywood she begins to feel torn. They are alike in many ways and completely different in others. But there is something more sinister going on with someone trying to scare her away from whom and to whom she’s not sure.

I found this novel a very strange one, I spent the early parts of it laughing a lot it was funny, despite the fact I found the storyline far-fetched and hard to believe I just went with it and let her bubbly nature carry the story. Chantelle got into some hilarious scrapes and the overall feel of the book was that it was going to be a romcom. Then around the mid-way point this suspensful feeling came in which wasn’t fully played up but was hanging in the air and the humour disappeared. The book had completely switched genres and steam and I admit to being a little confused about where we were heading now.

The confusion didn’t really leave me for the rest of the book, Chantelle clearly had stronger feelings for one of the two men, the feelings to me stood out miles above the other but the way the book is written is that there is a definite love triangle which didn’t fit with the way the emotion came out of the story.

I loved Chantelle in the first part of the story, absolutely adored her, that feisty bubbly nature. The way she walked into things without realising quite what she was doing.  She was funny and did some really hilarious things. I think book two definitely needs more of this Chantelle.

As for the guys in her life I think Robbie was shy and withdrawn, I think it took a lot for him to show his cards and be open. Lionel was a more confident person but I still think it was hard for him to open up emotionally. I felt really moved by his rawness. I wish we had seen more one on one interaction with them both, so we could get to know each of them a bit better. I felt like we didn’t see enough with either of them to warrant Chantelle falling in love with either of them. Lust yes, love hell no.

Overall, an enjoyable debut, an easy read but it gets a little bit lost around the middle as to what type of book it wants to be and the storyline in general is about as out there as it can get quite honestly.

#WeekendBlitz: Stuck With Me by Cassandra Piat @cassandra_piat @NeverlandBT #Review

Welcome to the weekend blitz for Stuck With Me by Cassandra Piat, today I’m reviewing this feel good rom-com and I highly recommend it as one you pick up for your beach reading.

Description

Can your perspective on life, happiness and love really change in a week?

Molly, known for her unflagging optimism and constant cheeriness, is thrilled to win an all-expenses paid vacation to Mauritius. She packs her camera and a few colourful bikinis and can’t wait to have some fun in the sun. Little does she know there’s a catch.

Adam is a journalist on assignment and his mission is to test Molly’s optimism and see how far she can be pushed before she breaks. Surely it can’t be that hard?

What happens when Molly meets the hilariously cantankerous Adam and finds that she can’t seem to shake him? How will Adam successfully complete his task when faced with Molly’s beautiful smile, quick wit and curvaceous body?

As they bicker their way around the island, Adam and Molly realise that there’s more to each other than meets the eye. An unexpected friendship develops between them which soon turns into much more. But what will happen when Molly learns the truth behind Adam’s trip to Mauritius?

A heartfelt, funny and touching story about life, love, and happiness.

Review

Is someone who is always happy and optimistic genuinely happy and optimistic? This is what Adam is set to find out when his editor tasks him with driving Molly to despair during a holiday to Mauritius.

Molly who believes she has won the holiday and is looking forward to relaxing in the sun for a week is less than impressed by the annoying man who seems set on getting in her way and driving her to despair.

This was a novel that was so easy to get into, the story flowed off the page very quickly, with the narrative switching between Adam and Molly. It was very easy to follow and had laugh out loud moments on almost every page.

One thing I was extremely impressed with was Cassandra Piat’s handling of anxiety. I think handling a mental health issue in a lighthearted book of this nature is difficult, it would be easy to brush it off, make light of it, or say thing that are quite inappropriate. Or equally to unbalance the book and make things too serious in a book that has a lighthearted tone. Cassandra found the perfect balance, finding the right level of serious, while keeping the easy nature of the book always bubbling underneath.

Molly and Adam were both likeable characters, their individual stories were interesting and the way they both can’t quite seem to see what is right in front of them is quite brilliantly done.

I adored the settings of this book, Mauritius for the majority of it (I mean who wouldn’t want to be in a setting like this?) and Perth for the rest (again, wow)! This is perfect beach-side reading although I will be honest and say it did a pretty good job of helping me forget the awful weather outside the window right now!

A huge thanks to Cassandra Piat for the eARC so that I could honestly review this novel.
