#BlogTour: The Sullivans Books 1-3 by Bella Andre @bellaandre @RABTBookTours #Review

Happy Monday! Today I have a treat for you, this is a 3-in-1 from the very wonderful Bella Andre which I’ve had the pleasure to read and review, check out my thoughts below. You can check out the full tour schedule over at RABT Book Tours.

More than 6 million readers have already fallen in love with the Sullivans! Now get ready to meet your new favorite family in Bella Andre’s New York Times and USA Today bestselling contemporary romances with the first three books in the #1 hit series.

“Not since Nora Roberts has anyone been able to write a big family romance series with every book as good as the last! Bella Andre never disappoints!” Revolving Bookcase Reviews

Chloe Peterson is having a bad night. A really bad night. The large bruise on her cheek can attest to that. And when her car skids off the side of a wet country road straight into a ditch, she’s convinced even the gorgeous guy who rescues her in the middle of the rain storm must be too good to be true. Or is he?

As a successful photographer who frequently travels around the world, Chase Sullivan has his pick of beautiful women, and whenever he’s home in San Francisco, one of his seven siblings is usually up for causing a little fun trouble. Chase thinks his life is great just as it is–until the night he finds Chloe and her totaled car on the side of the road in Napa Valley. Not only has he never met anyone so lovely, both inside and out, but he quickly realizes she has much bigger problems than her damaged car. Soon, he is willing to move mountains to love–and protect–her, but will she let him?

For thirty-six years, Marcus Sullivan has been the responsible older brother, stepping in to take care of his seven siblings after their father died when they were children. But when the perfectly ordered future he’s planned for himself turns out to be nothing but a lie, Marcus needs one reckless night to shake free from it all.

Nicola Harding is known throughout the world by only one name – Nico – for her catchy, sensual pop songs. Only, what no one knows about the twenty-five year old singer is that her sex-kitten image is totally false. After a terrible betrayal by a man who loved fame far more than he ever loved her, she vows not to let anyone else get close enough to find out who she really is…or hurt her again. Especially not the gorgeous stranger she meets at a nightclub, even though the hunger – and the sinful promises – in his dark eyes make her want to spill all her secrets.

Gabe Sullivan risks his life every day as a firefighter in San Francisco. But after learning a brutal lesson about professional boundaries, he knows better than to risk his heart to his fire victims ever again. Especially the brave mother and daughter he saved from a deadly apartment fire…and can’t stop thinking about.

Megan Harris knows she owes the heroic firefighter everything for running into a burning building to save her and her seven-year-old daughter. Everything except her heart. Because after losing her navy pilot husband five years ago, she has vowed to never suffer through loving – and losing – a man with a dangerous job again.

The Sullivans - Tour Banner

This is a three books in one deal so reviewing it is going to be a little different. I don’t want to bundle them into one summary as I feel like that would do each of them an injustice so I will do smaller summaries for each book to give you a feel for what you are getting…

The Look of Love
Chase Sullivan is the first of the Sullivan family we are introduced to, a photographer who is growing tired of his fast and loose lifestyle. When he finds Chloe in a car wreck at the side of the road, a nasty bruise on the side of her face that she clearly didn’t get crashing her car he instantly feels the need to protect her. Taking her to his brothers Vineyard where he was heading for a photo shoot anyway he is determined to win her over. But Chloe isn’t easily won.

It’s like watching a game of cat and mouse with these two, he is so self-assured and she is so determined that a man in her life is the last thing she needs. As they get to know each other the heat is palpable, and they are both so adamant in their chosen paths. It’s hard to know which way either of them are going to go.

From This Moment On
Marcus is the eldest Sullivan at 36 and has just split up with his long term girlfriend who was cheating on him. When he meets 25 year old Nicola in a club he only has one thing on his mind, sex. But Nicola is sweet and kind, and she starts to get under his skin. He is completely oblivious to the fact she is a superstar known to everyone, including his choreographer sister, who works with her, as Nico.

The two can’t help but be drawn together, but Marcus, who likes a quiet and private life and has seen what fame brings to his movie star brother’s life, needs to decide if Nicola is worth sacrificing his privacy. Feeling the torture he was going through was heartbreaking. The same for her, there are times I could sense she would give everything up for the peace of being on Marcus’ vineyard with him. Two people from such different worlds who clearly love each other but making it work seems completely impossible.

Can’t Help Falling In Love
This was my favourite of the three books in this boxset. Gabe is the hero of the Sullivan clan, a firefighter. When he gets injured saving a mother and daughter from an apartment fire they want to than him. The moment he see’s them in the hospital room he knows that Megan is special. But he has an arrangement with himself, no dating people he saves because it never ends well.

Megan’s husband died several years earlier and she has her own arrangement with herself to not date anybody who has a dangerous job. But her own attraction to Gabe is almost too much. These two broke my heart over and over. Their push and pull from and to each other was so hard to keep reading. They both battled themselves and each other so hard trying to deny their feelings and yet through it all the way they felt kept shining through. This is a beautifully written book and if you’re only going to read one of the three make it this one.

One thing I absolutely love in all of these books was how the Epilogue in each is a teaser for the next book in the series, it really makes you want to dip in and keep reading the series, very cleverly done. I’m totally falling in love with this family, I absolutely have to continue reading about the Sullivans, as you read these books all of the family members become a part of your psyche and there is now a need to know what their stories will be and how things will turn out.

Sending a huge thanks to Bella Andre and RABT Book Tours for the eARC so that I could honestly review this book.

#BookBlitz: First Crush, Last Love by Elizabeth McKenna @ElizaMcKenna @RABTBookTours #Excerpt #Giveaway

Welcome to this book blitz organised by RABT Book Tours. Check out more about this book below including an excerpt and don’t miss out on the giveaway at the end of the post!

Remember your first crush? How your heart raced and your cheeks flushed whenever you saw him? Jessie Baxter does, and it’s happening again. Ten years ago, despite her best efforts, Lee Archer wanted to be just friends. Now, he wants more, but Jessie’s still recovering from a psycho ex-husband. Can she learn to trust again and make her first crush into her last love?

Elizabeth McKenna’s latest novel will have you remembering the angst of high school, the grief of a failed relationship, and the happiness of true love.

First Crush Last Love - Blitz Banner

The smell of bacon roused Jessie from an early morning dream of being chased across a cold, moonless beach. The feet that carried her for miles on her runs were useless in the deep sand. Every time she stumbled, her panic grew until her body no longer responded to commands. Rubbing at her heavy eyelids, she blew out a deep breath, and the last remnants of the nightmare faded away.

She squinted at the clock on the nightstand and groaned. It seemed like she had been asleep for mere minutes. After saying goodnight to Lee, she had stared at the dim stars on the bedroom ceiling and waited for sleep to bring her a needed reprieve from her messed-up life. Instead, her mind had bounced between Billy and Lee, wondering what either of them was up to and why she had to be involved.

When her stomach rumbled in appreciation of the smoky sweet smell, she sat up with a jolt. Lee Archer was in her mother’s kitchen making breakfast, and it smelled damn good. She jumped out of bed and twirled in a circle, unable to decide what to fix first. Her frizzy curls stood out in every direction, and her breath reeked from last night’s garlic-laced meal.

She grabbed a pair of running shorts and checked the hall before dashing to the bathroom. A few minutes later, she emerged with her hair in a messy bun and her teeth scrubbed to the point of drawing blood.

In the kitchen, Lee stood at the stove pushing eggs around a pan and wearing last night’s rumpled clothes and a shadow of a beard. Jessie clamped down on her bottom lip. It was too much to take in.

“You’re awake. I left you some coffee.” He gave her a crooked smile before turning his attention to the frying bacon.

She eyed her morning drug on the far side of the kitchen and willed her legs to move in the direction of the coffee maker. After dumping three sugar packets into a cup, she poured the heavenly brew with a sigh. Looking up, she frowned at Lee’s amused expression. “What? I like sweet coffee.”

“Breakfast will be ready in a minute. Can you put down the toast?” He nodded with his chin at the toaster.

While she slept in, Lee had set the table, cooked eggs and bacon, poured juice, and cut three mums from her mother’s garden for a centerpiece. Yeah, making toast was the least she could do.

“What do you do for a girl the next morning when she actually sleeps with you?”

Lee’s eyes ran up and down her body, and then something akin to a growl came from his throat. Maybe she should have put on sweats instead of shorts.

“I like cooking. Remember Denny’s restaurant? I think if I hadn’t become a cop, I would have been a chef.”

They settled at the table and ate in silence for the first few bites.

“Is it OK?” He pointed at her plate with his fork.

She nodded in appreciation. “Better than OK. I usually grab a granola bar for breakfast. This is a real treat.”

“I was thinking we could swing by my place so I can get cleaned up before heading to the station. I’ll need you to make a statement before I can run the knife for prints.”

Her gaze went to the kitchen island where the hunting knife sat wrapped in the plastic bag. “Billy was arrested for a bar fight in college. Would his prints be in the system for that?”

“Should be.”

“If it’s his knife, then what?”

“We’ll bring him in for questioning.”

“Can you hold him? Like put him in jail?”

“That will be up to the DA and the judge.”

She nodded. “Even if he did this, he can still . . .”

Putting her fears into words would make them too real, but from the grim look on Lee’s face, she didn’t have to.

“You could file for a restraining order,” he said.

“Would that help?” She wasn’t sure she had the strength for more legal action against Billy. Like most divorces, theirs had been ugly, full of half-truths and name-calling. She had even secretly wished him dead at one point to put an end to it all.

“To be honest, probably not, but it would make arresting him a lot easier if he keeps stalking you.”

Stalking her. She hadn’t thought of it like that, but it was what Billy was doing. Her knuckles whitened as she gripped her fork. Three years. Before this weekend, it had been three years since she had talked to her ex-husband. Why couldn’t he move on? If their love had been so wonderful—if they had been soulmates—he never would have cheated on her. That was the one thing she had never understood when he fought the divorce. It was obvious they weren’t right for each other. Why couldn’t he see that?

She nibbled on a piece of bacon, while her mind searched for new answers to old questions. After a few more bites, she pushed her plate away.

“Changed your mind about my cooking?”

“It was wonderful. I guess I don’t have much of an appetite this morning.”

“How about I clean up while you shower?” Lee gathered their dishes and headed for the sink.

She shook her head in disbelief. “How are you not married?”

Over his shoulder, he gave her a smile that ignited small fires in several sensitive areas of her body. “I have no idea.”

“Well, the cockiness might be a turnoff,” she said, covering her desire for him with a dose of sass.

He looked down at his crotch. “There’s nothing wrong with my—.”

She held up a hand. “Stop!”

His low chuckle sent flames over her cheeks. He turned on the kitchen faucet and squirted dish soap into the sink. “Go take that shower.”

Jessie darted from the room. It would need to be a cold shower, she thought, as she pounded up the stairs.

About Elizabeth McKenna

Elizabeth McKenna - Author Image

Elizabeth McKenna works as a full-time technical writer/editor for a large software company. Though her love of books reaches back to her childhood, she had never read romance novels until one Christmas when her sister gave her the latest bestseller by Nora Roberts. She was hooked from page one (actually, she admits it was the first love scene).

She had always wanted to write fiction, so she combined her love of history, romance and a happy ending to write Cera’s Place and Venice in the Moonlight. Her short story, The Gypsy Casts a Spell, is available for free on her website http://elizabethmckenna.com/. She hopes you will enjoy her first contemporary romance novel, First Crush Last Love, as much as others have enjoyed her historical romances.

Elizabeth lives in Wisconsin with her understanding husband, two beautiful daughters, and a sassy Labrador. When she isn’t writing, working, or being a mom, she’s sleeping.

#BlogTour: Taking Chances by Kimberley O’Malley @K_OMalley67 @RABTBookTours #Interview

Today I’m taking part in the blog tour for Kimberley O’Malley’s new novel Taking Chances. Find out more about the book below, it’s definitely on my ever growing wish list! I also have a fab author interview which I hope you enjoy!

Katie Fitzgerald learned the hard way about love. She vowed to never get involved with a doctor at work, and when she did, he broke her heart. Older and wiser, Katie is serious about never getting hurt again. Dr. Flynn Reynolds, staff cardiologist at Windsor Falls Memorial, just might be the man to change her mind. Attraction explodes between the two from their very first meeting. But Katie is determined to protect her heart. Will Flynn convince her to take another chance?

Author Interview

Thanks for joining me on my blog today, I’m so pleased to have you and hope you enjoy answering these questions.

Tell us a bit about Taking Chances
Thanks so much for having me! Taking Chances is the story of Katie Fitzgerald and Flynn Reynolds. Katie is a small-town girl who puts her whole heart into her work as a critical care nurse yet protects it on a personal front. Katie has been burned before; by a doctor no less. She’s not going down that road again. No matter how hot Flynn is. Flynn is a Cardiologist from Atlanta who moves to Windsor Falls to start his own practice. The attraction between the two is so powerful that even Katie can’t deny it. Or can she?

What inspired Katie and her story?
Katie first appeared as a secondary character in Coming Home, the first novel in my Windsor Falls series. I liked her sass. Katie doesn’t take crap from anyone—the product of growing up with older brothers. I liked the chemistry between she and Flynn in Coming Home and knew I had to tell their story.

Who is the main man in your story and is he based on anyone you know?
Flynn Reynolds is the leading man in Taking Chances. He’s a Cardiologist at Windsor Falls Memorial and new to the town. Most if not all my characters are bits and pieces of people I know or have met. Flynn is a bit of a rake. Or is he? He’s definitely got a bit of McDreamy from Grey’s Anatomy in him.

Which song would be the soundtrack of this novel?

Take A Chance on Me by Abba. The title is right! Taking Chances is all about learning to love again after heartbreak.

What is your writing process?
I am a Pantser who failed epically at being a Plotter. I tried to plot. Really, I did. But everything I have ever written, including this interview, is done right at the laptop. I know who the main characters are and have a general idea of what will happen. But much of the plot comes to me as I’m typing. Which is interesting and more than a bit scary.

Why Romance novels? What drew you to the genre?
Who doesn’t love a happy ending? The real world can be somewhat dark and scary, and romance novels offer escapism. I have been reading them since middle school. A great romance novel offers you a chance to lose yourself for a while.

Who are your inspirations in the genre?
I love Jill Shalvis, Kristan Higgins, and Susan Mallery. I have probably read everything they have written thus far. I LOVE the fictional towns they have created. I want to live in Fools Gold, Manningsport, NY, or Cedar Ridge.

If you were to try another genre what would it be?
Romantic suspense. I love to read this genre, and I would love to write it.

What book have you most recently read?
Speaking of romantic suspense, I just finished Linda Castillo’s Down a Dark Road. Fabulous!! I love her Kate Burkholder series. Like many romance readers, I am a sucker for a strong female lead character. I leave for Bermuda in the morning and cannot wait to crack open Jill Shalvis’s newest, Lost and Found Sisters.

What book do you most wish you had written?
Anything by Jane Austin. She was an amazing writer and ahead of her time. To have written something that has been read by millions and persevered for decades would be amazing!

Thanks so much for spending time on BrizzleLass Books and wishing you all the best with the novel.

She wasn’t looking for love.

Struggling to live up to the high expectations of overprotective parents and a hefty family name, Caryn Stevens only wants one Summer of Fun before focusing on finishing her college degree. She knows her destiny: to follow her dad as CEO of his multi-million dollar business. But that plan changes forever one day when she runs into—literally—sexy and single major league hockey player, Andrew Chadwick.

But love came looking for her.

Sparks instantly fly between the two, and Caryn can’t resist his charms as she discovers that Andrew has a reputation of winning – both on and off the ice. One of the most eligible singles in Toronto, Andrew could have any woman he wants, and he’s got Caryn in sights. But, when Caryn’s parents disapprove of the match and threaten to disinherit her and his hockey team trades him to a new city, it make take more than love for the couple to survive this penalty play.

They believe love conquers all.

One of pro-hockey’s golden couples, Andrew and Caryn Chadwick live in the limelight reserved for elite professional athletes. On their second anniversary, Andrew receives an unexpected contract offer to join the Tampa Suns. As they look forward to a new adventure, neither foresees an event that challenges their love and threatens their marriage.

Until it doesn’t.

A sudden and senseless accident threatens Andrew’s life and inexplicably drives a wedge between the couple. Shattered by the incident, paralyzed by fear that it could happen again, Caryn finds herself at odds with her husband and unable to provide the support he needs—at the time he is most vulnerable.

As their perfect world crumbles, each makes choices that take Andrew and Caryn further apart. Distrust, fears, and secrets construct walls. This Piece of My Soul follows the joint and separate paths the couple navigate as each hopes to rediscover the love that can conquer all.

This Piece of My Soul ends in a cliffhanger. The trilogy will conclude in This Piece of Our Being, anticipated release date Fall 2017

Clearing The Ice - Blitz Banner

Excerpt from This Piece of My Soul.

After a freak accident nearly takes Andrew’s life, he faces months of rehab. His goal—a complete recovery that will enable him to rejoin the Suns and compete at an elite level again. Caryn, however, fears that this accident wasn’t just a fluke. If it happened once…

Caryn decided to surprise Andrew one day when she visited. She’d gotten in the habit of pulling on the same old pair of jeans and whatever shirt was handy. She looked through her closet, finally selecting a brightly flowered dress that matched her mood. She took a little extra care with her makeup and hair, and even added a touch of perfume behind her ears.

Andrew’s surprised expression quickly turned into a warm smile when she entered the room, and he set aside his iPad and held his hand out to her as she walked toward the chair.

“Hello, gorgeous.” He grasped her hand and pulled her toward him. “You look sensational.” She perched on the arm of the chair, the warmth in his eyes spreading through her.

“Good day so far?” She kissed him, a brush across the lips.

“Right now I’d say freaking fantastic. Unless you’re wearing that dress just to torment me.”

“Not my intent.”

Andrew pulled her onto his lap, his fingers tracing the edge of the bodice. “My favorite dress, you know.”

“I thought you liked it.” Caryn’s stomach contracted expectantly at his touch. Her skin tingled beneath his fingers, and she kissed him gently. His arms closed around her, and Andrew held her tightly as his lips accepted her kiss, quickly deepening it. His hands grazed her skin, and tenderness quickly yielded to passion in a seemingly endless kiss.

Caryn knew her cheeks were flushed when she pulled back to catch her breath. Andrew touched her chin gently, his darkened eyes casting a spell she didn’t want to resist. He started to speak, then changed his mind, and guided her lips toward his again.

They might have forgotten they were in the hospital and allowed their emotions to lead them, finally given in to the desire Caryn knew raged within both of them, but Andrew unexpectedly pulled back. Caryn murmured a protest. He placed a finger gently against her lips, and then looked over her shoulder. She followed his gaze, feeling her cheeks burn when she saw Dan Forster.

“Doctor, your timing is incredible.” Andrew smiled wryly.

“Sorry to interrupt, Chadwick,” Forster retorted. “Busy day or I’d come back later.”

Caryn stood awkwardly and moved away from the chair, noticing that Andrew’s eyes followed her every movement. She shivered slightly, suddenly cold without his arms around her, every nerve in her body alive to his touch. She couldn’t take her eyes off him, even after he turned his attention to the doctor’s questions. She tried to concentrate on their conversation, but only a few words penetrated the haze of desire.

“I suppose you’ll be asking about putting a lock on that door,” Forster commented as he completed his entry on Andrew’s electronic chart.

Caryn blushed, but Andrew laughed. “Sounds like a good idea to me. When do I get some R&R with my wife?”

“Negotiate that at your own risk. You know the comings and goings of the staff better than I do. You’re making good progress, Andrew. You will move to the Rehab Center in the not-so-distant future.”

“Other than a relocation, how will that change anything?”

“More types of therapy than you are receiving now. We’ll focus on all your sensory systems, push you beyond your comfort zone. I’ll remain your primary doctor.”

“So we could incorporate the plan Pettit outlined?”

“That would serve as the center of your PT program.”

“And to move there, I have to…?”

“Andrew, I need to see significant improvement with your balance, the ability to walk with a cane, and no assistance with your personal needs.”

Caryn watched as Andrew processed this, then nodded with a smile. “I like goals.”

“Yes, I’ve noticed.”

“I especially like goals when I’m scoring them during a game.”

Forster laughed. “Patience, Chadwick.”

Scoring goals in a game. The words literally knocked the wind out of Caryn as her mind flashed back to that night. Andrew diving to block the puck… the instant she knew he’d misjudged the angle, the puck crashing against the side of his head. Caryn turned her head, her heart racing and reached inside her purse. She grabbed the container for her anti-anxiety medicine, and fingered one into her hand while Andrew continued to chat with Forster. Neither appeared to notice as she swallowed it dry, and then Caryn concentrated on taking deep calming breaths. As soon as Dan walked from the room, Caryn stepped to the counter and opened a Diet Coke.

“Can I get you anything, Drew?”

“I’m good. Headache?”

Caryn looked over her shoulder at him and shrugged. “Just trying to avoid one.” She felt his eyes searching hers, and then he beckoned her to his side. He grasped her waist and pulled her onto his lap.

“You got so pale all of a sudden. Are you okay?”

Caryn shrugged. “Skipped breakfast again. You know how that affects me.” She managed a quiet laugh. I can’t keep burdening him with my fears. He needs positive support, not a whiny, frightened, unsupportive wife. I can deal with my fears later.

“So do I need to send you a text each morning to remind you?” His eyes teased her.

Caryn looked at him with a light laugh. “If you don’t forget.”

“I’ll do my best.” He slipped his hand to her neck and gently massaged her shoulder. If he noticed the tense muscles he didn’t mention it. “Today, you looked so beautiful when you walked in. I just wanted to get up and carry you away.”

She touched his cheek. “You will soon, Andrew.”

“It’s taking forever,” he complained. “I’m tired of this hospital. I can’t even remember what ‘normal’ is anymore.”

“Maybe you could come home for a weekend?” Caryn ventured tentatively.

“Yeah, maybe when Dan releases me to the Rehab Center.”

“How was therapy today? I never had a chance to ask you.”

“For the most part I’m done with the parallel bars. Now I’m working with weights to strengthen my legs and arms, and of course, balance activities.”

Caryn rested her hand on his bicep. “This feels plenty strong to me.” A smile crossed her face. “So you’re going to come home even more ripped than you are now?”

Andrew laughed. “I’m hardly ‘ripped’ as you put it. I’m losing muscle tone and strength every day.”

Caryn ran her hand against his chest, and then playfully lifted his shirt to peer at his abs. “If you say so, Drew.” She lightly outlined the muscles with her fingers. “Enough to get my heart racing. You just keep that shirt on during therapy, understand?”

“How about when I get a massage?”

She knew by his tone that Andrew was teasing. “Just keep it on.” She tried to maintain a straight face, but the look in his eyes caused her to break into giggles. “I love you, Drew,” she managed. “And I don’t want any other woman’s hands on you.”

Off-camera arguments between Alex and Amy become difficult to ignore, and when Ella uncovers layers of deceit and closely guarded secrets between them, she becomes involved in a battle that has far-reaching implications.

With the paparazzi hounding her every move for the most sensational story they can get, Ella becomes deeply embroiled in Alex’s life. Can she break down his seemingly impenetrable walls, or will he remain the arrogant ass she first met?

STARSHINE is set in London, England. Beware though—Alex Denton has a crude mouth, and an equally wicked smile.

Starshine - Tour Banner

Author Interview

Thanks for taking joining me on my blog today, I’m so pleased to have you and hope you enjoy answering these questions.

1. Tell us a bit about Starshine
Starshine is a contemporary romance, sprinkled with a little bit of fantasy. It centres around Ella and her four-week work experience on the most anticipated film of the year, Starshine. The leading man is her idol, but she’s less than impressed with him after her first day on set. As she gets to know more about him, things change.  Starshine is a little bit of escapism, but also asks many questions about the price of fame.

2. What inspired Ella and her story?
I had a dream one night about my favourite screen idol, and it was so realistic that I jotted down the outline of it the next day.  The basic plot of Starshine was born. I always think there’s a lot of myself in the female characters I write, although whether I’d be brave enough (or stupid enough) to do the things they do is another question.

3. Who is the main man in your story and is he based on anyone you know?
Alex Denton is the main man. He’s arrogant, cocky and has a foul mouth. Having said that, he has a heart of steel whenever you can break through to it. He’s been hurt in his past, and can’t see beyond that at the start of the story. He’s not based on anyone I know, although there are several mannerisms he has that I took from my idol, but his name will remain a secret for now.

4. Which song(s) would be the soundtrack of this novel?

5. What is your writing process?
I’m a big planner and researcher! I usually plan out my stories, possibly because I’m used to writing series. And even though Starshine was sparked by a dream I had, I still drafted my outline and the order in which I wanted the scenes to happen.

6. Why Romance novels? What drew you to the genre?
I never set out to write a particular genre, it just so happened that when I wrote my first book, it was a romance. I love the complexities of relationships, the slow burn, or the insta-love. When I look at my reading list, I mainly have romance novels of some sort or other. I set out, once, to write a story that wasn’t a romance, but half way through those pesky cherubs danced on my shoulder and insisted it become one. So I don’t think it’s what drew me to the genre, it sort of wouldn’t let me write anything else 😊

7. Who are your inspirations in the genre?
I love Twilight by Stephanie Myers (Not so much the rest of the series), and I also like Lauren Kate (Fallen series), and Maria Snyder (Poison study.)

8. If you were to try another genre what would it be?
Maybe I should try mystery. My stories usually have some sort of suspense rolling around under the surface. (the Mine series, Sachael Dreams, Sachael Desires, and soon to be released Sachael Discovery, and Sachael Destiny have many secrets that are gradually revealed through the four books. You don’t get all your answers until book 4!) Whether I could do it without some sort of romance would be the main question.

9. What book have you most recently read?
I’ve just reread Gambit, by C Denault. This is a book by an Indie Author signed with my publisher for the Mine series. I devoured this book the first time I read it, and it was even better the second time around.

10. What book do you most wish you had written?
It would have to be Twilight by Stephanie Myers. Gosh, I really love that book 😊

Thanks so much for spending time on BrizzleLass Books and wishing you all the best with the novel.

About Melody Winter

Growing up, Melody Winter showed a natural ability in art, a head for maths, and a tendency to write far too long English essays. Difficult to place in the world when she graduated, she pursued a career in teaching, but eventually ended up working in finance. Melody is convinced that the methodical time she spends working with numbers fuels her desire to drift into dream worlds and write about the illusory characters in her head.

Melody lives in North Yorkshire, England, with her husband and two teenage sons. When not dealing with football, rugby, and a whole plethora of ‘boy’ activities, she will be found scribbling notes for her stories, or listening to 80’s music on her IPod.

Melody has a tendency to fall head-over-heels in love with her main characters, even when they frustrate her and refuse to act the way she wants them to. She is a romance writer at heart and loves reading and writing about anything mythological or magical, as well as exploring the gritty side of love affairs and the complexities of being in love.

SACHAEL DREAMS was her debut novel, (REUTS Publications, USA) and the first in the New Adult Romantic Fantasy series—the ‘Mine Series’. The second book in the series, SACHAEL DESIRES’, was released in November 2015, and the remaining books in the series, SACHAEL DELUSIONS, and, SACHAEL DESTINY, are due to be released in the near future.

Melody has also self-published two books, INIQUITY, the first book in a Dark New Adult Romantic Fantasy series— ‘The Ascent’ (The second book in the series, ADVERSITY, is due for release later this year.) and STARSHINE, Melody’s first contemporary romance,  released 29th May 2017.

#BlogTour: The Corner Office by Katerina Baker @KaterinaBaker @RABTBookTours #Interview

Today I’m taking part in the blog tour for Katerina Baker’s new novel The Corner Office. All of us who have worked in an office especially in management will recognise the themes in this book.  Katerina was kind enough to take some time out to answer some questions for us and that interview can be found a little bit further down the page!

Tara Johnson’s sacrifices are about to pay off: a senior executive at thirty-five at a Fortune 500 company, she’s one of the two finalists in line for a Managing Director position. Unfortunately, her rival of fifteen years, the charming, infuriating Richard Boyd, is just as qualified, and unlike her, he’s willing to cross pretty much every line to get what he wants.

Of all the things Tara stored in the attic to make it to the top, it’s her personal life she misses the most. That is, until she starts a steamy affair with sex god Aidan, her direct report. Interoffice relationships with a subordinate can mean the end of a career, and when Richard finds out, it’s the perfect opportunity to take his high-heeled nemesis out, especially since he’s still nursing a grudge against Tara for rejecting him years ago.

But Tara’s increasingly domineering lover has his own dark secrets, endangering more than just her career. As her liaison spirals out of control, salvation will come from the man she always thought she hated, and perhaps the only one to truly understand her.

The Corner Office - Tour Banner

Thanks for taking joining me on my blog today, I’m so pleased to have you and hope you enjoy answering these questions.

1. Tell us a bit about The Corner Office
Thanks so much for having me. I love your blog.

The Corner Office is a story of a thirty-something year old female executive and her journey to “achieve it all”: in career and personal life. It’s about the mistakes that she makes along the way, including her affair with her subordinate that almost destroys everything she worked for. He is very different from other men she is around: a tattooed biker who is intense and domineering in bed, he is set on pursuing her, and she is initially drawn to him.

But the novel is not just about work. The Corner Office is a fun, fast-paced story that centers around two characters who spent years hating each other and fighting. They are competitors in the office, but their feelings lie deeper than hate, and each of their interactions are explosive.

I wanted to layer in fun scenes and situations to offset topics that would be dry on their own. I threw Tara into awkward situations. For example, the guy she ends up having an affair with meets her on a bike, and she refuses to get on at first. She is wearing her work clothes: pencil skirt, tight shirt, high heels. There is a masturbation scene; here is a short excerpt:

A woman had other ways to satisfy her sexual cravings. Mine came in trendy silver, with an electronically operated, “modest-sized” device designed specifically for ”her” pleasure. It was there for me when I needed it, it didn’t require any work on my part to get it ready, and it didn’t ask to rank our latest adventure when we were done. “Tara, sweetie, how was it? I feel like this one was at least a solid eight.” My Adam & Eve had a bit more common sense than that.

2. What inspired Tara and her story?
My inspiration was the many women who struggle to manage multiple priorities in their lives: whether it’s balancing their work and family or their kids and personal interests that oftentimes take a backseat.

3. Who are the men in your story and are they based on anyone you know?
I’ve read somewhere that each author has maybe ten or twelve characters in them, and they alternate them for each of their novels. There is some truth to that, although I tried to build unique characters. When I create a character, I first design their flaws. This is what makes them human and drives their mistakes which will start the main events of a story.

The main character Richard is an accomplished executive, he is Tara’s competitor who spent years fighting with her. Where she is hard-working, he uses his street smarts and relationships to succeed. On some level, he is a typical male manager who has a large network of buddies at work. He is very sharp and comes up with out-of-the-box ideas. He is always thinking a few steps ahead. On a personal level, he admires Tara, although he doesn’t outright show it. He is attracted to her, but after she rejected him many years ago, he doesn’t make another step. Instead, he spends his free time going out with his friends. He is good-looking and women are always around him, yet he never stopped thinking about Tara.

He is your worst competitor at work: bright, snarky, and isn’t afraid to play dirty. There are some good scenes centered around that.

4. Which song is the soundtrack of this novel?
I listened to Kongos Come With Me Now while driving home, right before starting to write The Corner Office chapters. I also listened to Alicia Keys’ Girl On Fire and a few other power girl songs. In general, I like to listen to upbeat songs before writing. It always puts me in the right mood.

5. What is your writing process?
My writing process is to find quiet time and lock my door.

I work full time and I have two small kids, so I usually write at nights when the kids are in bed. Because of my limited time availability, I write whenever and wherever I have time. I write on my iPad on the bus to work, while waiting for my kids at their weekend classes, or in coffee shops while they are at birthday parties.

I think having less time actually gives me more inspiration and makes me more productive when I do finally sit down to write. On most days the words flow out of me, funneled by the full day of running around and taking care of other, less creative things.

6. Why Romance novels? What drew you to the genre?
Romance is such a diverse genre. I write Contemporary Romance, Romantic Suspense and YA, and they are totally different. Their main similarity is that in the center of each story are two people finding their way to be together. I love Romance because I can write drier topics and make them more fun by incorporating romance. Life is far from perfect, and writing romance is a way to change reality into something more beautiful.

7. Who are your inspirations in the genre?
My earlier inspirations were Linda Howard, Janet Evanovich (although not Romance genre, I’ve learned a lot from her writing, and her style is next to none). Some of the newer authors include Sarah Robinson, Katy Evans, Camilla Monk, Jodi Linton. I was fortunate enough to meet many authors online and I’ve learned a great deal from them. They and their successes inspire me every day.

8. If you were to try another genre what would it be?
I like suspense. The first novel I finished writing was Romantic Suspense, so I could see myself writing a fun Suspense novel where Romance is not the main arc of the story.

I also write YA. I love this genre because this is where you can take more risks as an author, you can deal with more complex issues.

9. What book have you most recently read?
I’ve recently read and highly recommend Camilla Monk’s Spotless series. I love Camilla’s dark humor and voice, and this series will make up stay up reading and laughing. What can be more fun than a serial killer with an OCD paired with a nerdy IT programmer who loves romance novels?

10. What book do you most wish you had read?
The next book I read will be The Futures by Anna Pitoniak. It’s a coming of age novel about two people in New York City. One of them is working on Wall Street and the other for a small non-profit. Their glamorous life and marriage is put under test when everything comes crashing down. This is Anna’s debut novel and the writing is superb.

Thanks so much for spending time on BrizzleLass Books and wishing you all the best with the novel.

Thank you for having me on your blog. I appreciate your time and it was fun answering your questions.
