Welcome to the blog tour for Tainted Rose by Yumoyori Wilson. I have an excerpt for you today and if you want to follow the tour you can do this at Xpresso Book Tours. This is the second book in this reverse harem series, you can catch my review of book one here!

Description

I failed…

My name is Ryder Carter, future heir of Realm Five, Minato.

I was destined to do great things, to walk alongside my fellow star knights, as we desperately searched for the woman who would lead our galaxy to salvation.

My spirit and I had failed her once, unable to prevent the chain of events and challenges she’d faced for sixteen cycles. Then, we finally found her – alive.

Within two rotations, she’d blossomed into a beautiful rose – such delicate petals, filled with purity and life. My mission was to guide her home, to where she truly belonged, as our Princess and saviour from the approaching darkness. She was more than just our Princess; I loved her with all my heart.

But…I failed. My once perfect rose, damaged by my failures. Would she ever forgive me, her star knight who’d sworn to protect her? Will I ever get the chance to tell her how much she means to me…to us?

Only the Starlight gods can tell. Please…bring my Firefly home.

Excerpt

“Fuck me, Ryder.”

I watched his pupils dilate, expanding quickly before constricting back to their normal size. I felt the hardness between his legs grow, as his breath caught in his throat.

“Makoto.”

The sound of my name as it left his lips was somewhere between a prayer and a curse. I never knew I could want something as badly as I had once wanted freedom, yet here I was, sitting in front of a man I loved.

He held me in his arms as he stood from the couch.

“Are you sure you want this? Once I start – I won’t be able to stop.”

There was no hesitation, no doubt in my soul. This was what I wanted.

“I’m sure.”

#Review: Dark Wish by Yumoyori Wilson Plus #GuestReview @PaRoyle

Dark Wish is another book that I had to skip reviewing while I was in my reading slump, I just didn’t get to it in time for the blog tour. I’ve now read it and have my review below and as a bonus, I have a review from the lovely Siobhan who has been reviewing a few books to add some variety to things here. I thought it would be interesting to post both reviews together!

Description

What do you get when you add free and dumb?
FREEDOM

My name is Makoto Heart and I’ve always wished for a chance at freedom. Every day, I prayed before the Starlight gods, asking for their divine assistance in accomplishing such a difficult task.

Being an experiment for as long as I can remember, my hopes of obtaining freedom have diminished, drastically. The disappointment haunted me, as myself and my spirits struggled to survive. I had no hope left, believing my final plea fell upon deaf ears, yet again.

But what happens when my prayers are finally answered? I’m thrust into fulfilling a destiny, with the help of six star knights. Suddenly, I am no longer experiment 555, but the stolen princess of Heila.

Freedom, how you have teased my troubled soul. May the Starlight gods guide me and my knights, on this path towards the unknown.

Review 1 – Claire

I had high hopes for Dark Wish, it was getting rave feedback in the reverse harem groups I’m in on Facebook, the few reviews I had read were glowing and everything I had read about it shouted: “this is for you Claire”. Unfortunately when I actually started reading it quickly became clear that I was not getting out of it what I was expecting and it became a book that I was really not enjoying.

Makoto Heart is in captivity from a young age, and this alone should warm you to her. But I didn’t, not from the very first page when it was clear what was happening did I feel any kind of warmth towards this character, she is naive, immature and quite honestly a real whiny bitch. She isn’t rescued until she is in her twenties by the men that will be her harem and her personality does not improve post-escape. It escapes me what they see in her though. I truly felt nothing for this girl despite all of her troubles. Some of my biggest issues were:

  1.  This is a group of people in their mid-twenties yet they are going to a school which is set up as though they are in their teens. It just didn’t work for me. It felt all wrong like it was an adult book trying to be YA.
  2. Makoto is always asleep, I am not kidding at least once every single chapter she is sleeping, I mean how the hell am I supposed to bond with the MC when all she does is sleep?
  3. There is virtually no dialogue between Makoto and her “Knights”, yet quite early on she talks in her dialogue about how she is falling for them, this just didn’t work for me. I couldn’t feel that when I didn’t know these guys properly.
  4. There is a great concept in this book that shifters, which is what Makoto and her Knights are, hold different spirits in their body, like angels, demons etc. I loved this concept, but it comes across clunky and awkward. I was confused quite often, and the multiple dialogues switching from internal to external and back again was just far too confusing. I get the author was trying to be funny but it fell short.
  5. This is a book set in a huge world, but the world building isn’t thorough enough for the multiple planets and different world ideologies to not be confusing. There was a glossary at the beginning but the author really needs to work on world building within the text to make this more powerful and easier for the reader.

Then we get to the writing. It just didn’t flow for me, it felt stunted and awkward. There wasn’t that natural flow that you need with a novel to really fell embraced by the words. There are a lot of typos and issues with the incorrect form of words being used and in some cases the completely wrong word being used such as interacted instead of interaction. It didn’t feel as though an editor had got anywhere near it which I always feel is a real shame because it always lets a book down terribly not to be properly edited.

Overall, I got to the end but will definitely not continue the series, it was just too much hard work for me.

I had an eARC of this book to review courtesy of the author and Xpresso Book Tours.

Review 2 – Siobhan

This is a hard book for me, I was confused with all the different planets, and such creatures, or gods. The beginning of the story started off as an escape plan, but I didn’t understand until later why they were trying to escape, the main female character was funny and kind of childish in my opinion, although she’s been sheltered and abused, her different personalities where hard to keep up with.

The Male leads were interesting all very different and intriguing, and sweet but in the story I feel that there wasn’t enough background information to each character, and I tried very hard to get into the story but found it hard, but please don’t be put off by my review although this isn’t my cup of tea I will recommend it to someone whom enjoys these types of books.

Excerpt

Why is it so cold or is his tingle inducing voice doing that?

“If you were wearing clothes, maybe you would feel, you know, less chilly?” Rose suggested, sounding uninterested in my current dilemma.

I panicked, glancing down to see myself wearing only a pink laced bra and matching panties. Karen had given me a spare set of clothes to change into that were more feminine, reassuring me I’d have more selection and school uniform by tomorrow.

I swear to starlight, I put something on before I slept…

“If you’re referring to the sheet that you grabbed off the side of the bed, wrapping yourself up like a caterpillar cocooning itself for hibernation, and face planting into the bed, then yes. You essentially put something on.” Lexi mused, enjoyment oozing off her usual mellow voice.

I groaned, putting my head into my hands. If I could die from embarrassment, this would be the moment. First night sleeping in a house filled with boys and I’d miraculously broke into one of the rooms, snuck myself into an occupied bed, and now was on full display like an underwear model.

Talk about first impressions.

#BlogTour: Shadow Spy by Tiffany Shand @TiffanyShand #Review

I love taking part in Tiffany Shand’s blog tour’s, her books are right up my alley and it’s an honour to help a UK based indie author who’s doing everything herself to make her books a success, books I have to say that are thoroughly enjoyable from cover to cover. Today I’m reviewing the second part of her latest trilogy which releases today, so be sure to head to Amazon and pick it up! Check the link below to see my review of the first book.

Book One: Shadow Walker

Description

After her partner, Drake disappears without a trace, Charlie McCray is determined to get him back with only telepathic dreams to aid her. The search leads her into the heart of Kyral, home to all Demonkind. With a gang leader determined to get ahold of the Srimtar, and enemies from Drake’s own past surrounding them, Charlie is running out of time.

Struggling with her own half-demon heritage and getting control of her powers, she meets the mysterious mist walkers, leaving her with more questions than answers. Charlie must go undercover, ascend to her powers, and get back the love of her life, all before it’s too late.

Review

Charlie knows what she wants now, she wants Drake, but he has disappeared. So Charlie and her team trek into the depths of the demon lands looking for Drake with a plan to rescue him from whatever has happened. She ends up meeting Drake’s long-estranged brother and as her new powers get stronger her path veers off in a direction she could never have anticipated.

Now, although Tiffany Shand’s books’ are on the short side, usually the three books in the series make up one long novel if read together, they are a joy to get your teeth into getting fully immersed in the world with enough characters to feel solidly a part of characters life while not being overwhelmed by too much happening.

I am adoring this series, the relationship between Drake and Charlie being so new and fragile while the life bond connection between them being so raw and adding a sense of inevitability between them.

For such a short book a lot happens in this one and I don’t want to say too much for fear of ruining the series for new readers, rest assured it’s well worth picking these books up and having a read.

Sending a huge thank you to Tiffany Shand for the review copy of this novel for my honest review.

Description

After her enforcer teammates are killed in a bust gone wrong, Denai witch Charlie McCray struggles to carry on working the job without them. Using her gift of communicating with the dead, she’s determined to get justice and find those responsible no matter what. But her only clue to go on is a mysterious orb with a deadly reputation that everyone wants to get their hands on.

The only one who may be able to help her figure out their deaths, and the connection to the orb is the dark and sexy demon from her past. Convinced she’s his life mate, to her denial, Charlie isn’t happy to see him again. Can they really work together as partners to track down the truth whilst ignoring the ever-growing attraction between them?

Review

Charlie McCray is a Denai witch who works as an enforcer. She lost her entire team in a bust that went horrendously wrong and now she’s set on finding the person responsible. Drake, a demon from her past steps in to help her and they start investigating.

The thing about Drake is that he is convinced that Charlie is his life-mate and he is going to stop at nothing to convince her. While she feels something for him, she is in full speed denial. To my mind I can’t fathom for a second why this girl can’t accept him, he’s a steaming hot alpha male who would run in front of a speeding train if it meant protecting her. But who knows what goes on inside the mind of a stubborn woman?

This is a fascinating read, as with previous Tiffany Shand books it’s a short novella length perfect for a quick afternoon read, and leaves you with a shocking cliffhanger ready to pick up the next book which is out in February. Hold on to your hats guys, this one is going to be a bumpy ride!

Sending a huge thank you to Tiffany Shand for the review copy of this novel for my honest review.

#Review: The Dark Highlander by Karen Marie Moning @KarenMMoning

Description

Journey to a world of ancient magic, breathtaking sensuality, thrilling time-travel…. Journey to the world of The Dark Highlander. Crisscrossing the continents and the centuries, here is a novel as gripping as it is sensual—an electrifying adventure that will leave you breathless….

I am Dageus MacKeltar, a man with one good conscience and thirteen bad ones, driven to sate my darkest desires…

From his penthouse lair high above Manhattan, Dageus looks out over a glittering city that calls to the darkness within him. A sixteenth-century Scot trapped between worlds, he is fighting a losing battle with the thirteen Druids who possess his soul, dooming him to an eternity of sexual pursuit. When Chloe Zanders, student of antiquities, is drawn into his world, she finds the insatiable alpha male an irresistible lure. Before long, she is caught up in an ancient prophecy that will sweep her back into time to medieval Scotland. Plunged into a world of timeless magic and dark seduction, she will soon face the challenge of a lifetime: fighting thirteen evil spirits for the heart of one irresistible man….

Review

When Chloe delivers an antiquity to a rich man in his New York Penthouse the last thing she expects is Dageus, an imposing Highlander who won’t let her leave and brings her into a hunt for the solution to a prophecy which is fantastical at the very least. Except for Dageus it’s a reality he is living proof of.

As their investigation sweeps them back to medieval Scotland Chloe becomes swept up in more than the investigation becoming enamoured with Dageus who becomes more dangerous to be around as each day passes.

I really enjoyed reading Chloe and Dageus’ dynamic and how they battle the odds together, I didn’t connect much with the paranormal elements of this story though. I just found that I didn’t find the evil elements believable and the time travel wasn’t really doing it for me. There were big chunks of this book that I skimmed through so that I could get back to the more enjoyable relationship elements of the story which is quite unusual for me as I normally feast on the paranormal elements of these stories.

This was an enjoyable book, Chloe and Dageus were a fantastic couple but it didn’t quite hit the mark overall for me as a paranormal romance. I doubt I’ll continue this series.

Christina Bauer is releasing a new book in a new series and I’m thrilled to be part of the tour. If you would like to follow the tour head over to Xpresso Book Tours for the full list of blogs and links! Today I have a guest post from Christina and there is also a tour-wide giveaway for you.

Description

“If Janet Evanovich teamed with a young adult, fairy-tale author like Marissa Meyer (the Lunar Chronicles) or Alex Flinn (Beastly), the result might be something like Christina Bauer’s Wolves and Roses.” –Blue Ink Review

Seventeen-year-old Bryar Rose has a problem. She’s descended from one of the three magical races—shifters, fairies, or witches. That makes her one of the Magicorum, and Magicorum always follow a fairy tale life template. In Bryar’s case, that template should be Sleeping Beauty.

“Should” being the key word.

Trouble is, Bryar is nowhere near the sleeping beauty life template. Not even close. She doesn’t like birds or woodland creatures. She can’t sing. And she certainly can’t stand Prince Philpot, the so-called “His Highness of Hedge Funds” that her aunties want her to marry. Even worse, Bryar’s having recurring dreams of a bad boy hottie and is obsessed with finding papyri from ancient Egypt. What’s up with that?

All Bryar wants is to attend a regular high school with normal humans and forget all about shifters, fairies, witches, and the curse that Colonel Mallory the Magnificent placed on her. And she might be able to do just that–if only she can just keep her head down until her eighteenth birthday when the spell that’s ruined her life goes buh-bye.

But that plan gets turned upside down when Bryar Rose meets Knox, the bad boy who’s literally from her dreams. Knox is a powerful werewolf, and his presence in her life changes everything, and not just because he makes her knees turn into Jell-O. If Bryar can’t figure out who—or what—she really is, it might cost both her and Knox their lives… as well as jeopardize the very nature of magic itself.

Creating A New Series And Characters

By Christina Bauer

As a writer, I love creating new worlds. Now that I’m about to launch my twelfth book, WOLVES AND ROSES, I thought I’d share some of my processes for world creating. For those who are interested, here they are!

I Start Off With A Question. Normally.

For my series ANGELBOUND, I wondered what it would be like if the folks who ran the afterlife—angels, demons and the like—were just as mixed up as we mortals were. That became the foundation of my world building. In the case of WOLVES AND ROSES, I was planning to write an adult werewolf book and then a totally different first chapter came out of my head pretty clearly. It had Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, the evil queen from Snow White, and Red Riding Hood…All in a basement in mid-town Manhattan…and all in a therapy group for girls who have failed their fairy tale life template. Talk about a shocker. I loved it.

I Spend Way Too Much Time on Pinterest

When I’m in world-building mode, I’m a bit of a Pinterest junkie. In fact, one of my biggest problems during this stage is that Pinterest locks me out because I’m pinning to quickly NOT to be a bot (I take that as a compliment, by the way.) I make boards for all sorts of things, from settings to characters to a general board I call “Needs a Home.” I’ll dump a ton of pictures in and then prune out the ones that don’t work until I get a first visual draft. For WOLVES AND ROSES, the character of Knox went through a TON of visual revisions until I settled on the final.

Languages, Languages, Languages

I like to assign different language bases to the peoples in my worlds. I’ve used German, Latin, and Nordic languages. My favorite is Swahili, which I had been hoarding for a long time before I got to use it in my BEHOLDER series.

***SPOILER ALERT***

For WOLVES AND ROSES, the language base is really Egyptian hieroglyphs, which become more and more significant as the series goes on.

Write the Thing

I used to get stuck (as in REALLY stuck) on the planning stage. Now I do some planning while I’m writing another series, so I find that by the time I’m ready to start the newness, things have been percolating in my mind. That’s certainly what happened with WOLVES AND ROSES…I had no idea what was going on there! In this case, I have eight books in total mapped out in the series. We’ll see if the plans stay solid or I have more surprises in store when I sit down to write them. Whatever it ends up being, I hope you enjoy the Fairy Tales of the Magicorum!
