Shabby Sunday: The New Penguin Dictionary of Music – 1977

Shabby Sunday is a meme created by Mischenko at Read Rant Rock & Roll. The idea is to share our old/vintage books. I honestly don’t have much by way of books that qualify for this but when I was checking my bookshelves out I found this one and knew it was one to share. I will check out books I have in storage at my Mum’s as well when I can in case any of them qualify but that will require making my brother climb in the attic so I will need to catch him in a happy mood!

This book is probably one of the few things I would save in a fire. It’s also falling apart at the seams, and riddled with mould spores thanks to the house I used to live in being a mould death trap. My Great-Grandad who I adored gave it to me when I was 11 and moved up to secondary school. That was about the time it became clear I was going to take studying music seriously. This had belonged to him, he didn’t play any instruments as far as I know, but he absolutely loved music and we used to listen to music together quite often. He bought me my first clarinet and gave me this book, which went with me everywhere and helped me immensely with my music theory study.

This is the fourth edition and was published in 1977, this is a book which has been well used and is well loved. I can’t look at it without remembering my Great-Grandad and how supportive he was of my studies.

Quite coincidentally, when I was at the fantasy faction event at Waterstones in Bath a few weeks ago, I glanced up at one of the shelves and saw the most recent edition on the shelf and was so pleased they are still publishing it. Details for buying the latest version are below.

Liebster Award – Take Two!

OK, so I know I did a Liebster award recently but it was rolled up with another award in a kind of mash up so I thought why not accept the nomination for this one which is a straight up Liebster Award, and anyway, I kind of enjoy these as a bit of light relief from chasing my tail with books all the time! Thanks to Jay over at This Is My Truth Now for the nomination. If you haven’t checked out his blog it’s pretty damn awesome, I always end up leaving essays instead of comments so his writing is inspiring!

The Rules

  • Say thank you to the person who has nominated you for the Award.
  • Answer the 11 questions the person has asked you
  • Nominate 11 people
  • Ask the people who you have nominated 11 questions

The Questions

What made you start blogging?
I honestly don’t remember, I used to love getting in on things early, I always had the first new phone, the best laptops, working in digital marketing I was really up on what was going on new in the world and I found out about blogging really early on. I know I set my first blog up in 2002, it was about the same time as a couple of really close friends of mine, one another marketer, the other a techy and I do remember we thought we’d be able to keep in touch with each other, we had no idea how much of the world would open up to us. I made a friend within a couple of months in Oklahoma and she is still one of my best friends and yes we have met in person several times.

What are the primary content areas on your site?
This one is all books, everything on this site is steered around books, I primarily read Fantasy and Romance, I always say they are a strange mix but they work for me so that’s all that matters. I have another blog which is much more personal and 90% of it is about mental health and living with bipolar. I’m mixing that one up slightly at the moment and putting a few more feature pieces in at the moment to try and make it a bit more interesting and to fill in a few gaps I’ve been having so we’ll see how it goes.

What other languages can you speak, read or write?
Great question! I learned French at school and I can still speak about 10 words, no kidding, I’ve only ever been to France once and I was determined to speak French while I was there and it was the most hilarious experience of my life, I had people in shops and restaurants rolling with laughter. I also used to live in Greece and while I was there I learned conversational Greece, it’s been about 17 years though and a lot of that has gone from my head completely. I’m not good at languages and unless I’m speaking them all the time I can’t hold on to them. I also used to know some BSL (British Sign Language) but again without using it, it has run away!

Which color best describes your choice in books?
Black

What is your favorite of the 7 deadly sins, and why?
Oh I’m torn here… Lust or Wrath… Lust because well duh I’m a Romance reader! and Wrath because well I read Fantasy I love a bit of anger, and death and blood!

What other job would you want to have?
Right now I’m volunteering at a mental health charity, that’s kind of my dream job. To do what I’m good at to help people with mental health problems like I have that would be awesome. I’ve also trained as a peer worker so I can actually work one to one with people so that would be pretty cool too.

What foods can’t you stomach no matter how hard you try? (You must have tried it before)
Pineapple…seriously it’s the devil’s food. I can’t even eat something it’s been in and then been removed from it’s disgusting. I’m very passionate about how much I hate Pineapple this could go on for a long time but I’ll end it here.

What zoo animal would you most want as a pet?
Tiger

Who do you live with?
The Hubs

Describe the perfect book.
Epic Fantasy with a romantic storyline lots of strong worldbuilding, swordplay, magic, bloody battles and twists you don’t see coming for miles.

Which blog that you follow is your must-read every day? Only 1!
Books Vertigo & Tea I totally adore Danielle’s blog and we read very similar books and seem to react to them in the same ways so I can rely on if Danielle likes a book then I probably will.

This week has been a very rough week personally and I haven’t done much reading, I’ve a lot of blog tours coming up so I need to find some time to catch up on my reading!

Stacking the Shelves #4 – New Books This Week

My bipolar is still causing me issues with reading and my pace has slowed dramatically which isn’t helping me clear the TBR although the lift in weather is at least encouraging me to spend more time outside book in hand!

This week I have resisted purchasing books and my incoming books have been very low! Hoorah!

Stacking the Shelves #3 – New Books This Week

Here is this week’s Stacking the Shelves, this is a weekly meme which is organised by Tynga’s Reviews, as I put myself on a book ban during April to catch up with ARC’s this should be a blank post, but a few have slipped through the net…

This week I haven’t done much and have been reading less. My bipolar has been quite bad, I’ve been very hypomanic and have been on a lot of sedating medications and struggling to concentrate so my reading has slowed down quite significantly!

I also tried to read probably one of the worst books that’s ever crossed my path… more on that on Monday when my rather short review goes up!

Here are my new books this week!

Stacking the Shelves #2 – New Books This Week

Here is this week’s Stacking the Shelves, this is a weekly meme which is organised by Tynga’s Reviews, as I put myself on a book ban during April to catch up with ARC’s this should be a blank post, but a few have slipped through the net…

I’ve been busy reading this week, as many readers of this blog know I have bipolar and I’m currently heading towards a manic episode so I have lots of adrenaline and while I’m currently reading quite a lot I’m struggling with concentration so my reading levels may drop for a bit soon while my mood get’s a bit more unpredictable…we’ll see!

It’s also World Book Night today so I hope those with books to give out (like me) have fun and get them all to happy homes. I was planning to go to see Amanda Prowse speaking at a World Book Night event this evening but due to my Bipolar going all manic I’ve had to cancel my tickets and am staying dosed up on medications instead.

Here are my new books this week!
