#BlogTour: True Horizon by Laurie Winter @lauriew_author @WildRosePress @lolasblogtours #Review

Welcome to my stop on the True Horizon blog tour organised by Lola’s Blog Tours. Today I have my review of this wonderful book for you which I hope you enjoy. If you missed my review of the first book in this series check it out below.

Book One: Home Field

Back home on her family’s Texas Longhorn ranch, Grace Murray is busy preparing for her wedding. After a scruffy tattooed drifter saves her life, she takes on the mission of helping her savior, Heath Carter, find peace. The steady friendship and unconditional acceptance she receives from him encourages her to trade an old dream for a new one—a dream true to her heart. When she calls off her wedding, Grace is finally set free to fully love Heath.

After a decade of military service, Special Forces veteran Heath Carter is living with war’s tragic consequences. Struggling with PTSD, anger, and guilt, he travels through Texas, solitarily moving from job to job. Working with Grace on the ranch, Heath’s guilt over his past actions make him feel unworthy of her love. As their paths lead them in different directions, Heath needs to discover the courage to fight his toughest battle yet—the one inside himself.

True Horizon - Tour Banner

We briefly meet Heath in the first book of this series Home Field, he was best friend’s with Julie’s Husband before he died and has been suffering ever since. Now that he is no longer in the military he just travels around on his bike taking odd jobs and sleeping where he can. His guilt over being unable to save his best friend eating at him every day.

When he meets Grace in the process of saving her life a bond is formed between the pair and we see how her open heart becomes the healing drug Heath has needed. The only problem is that Grace is engaged to somebody else.

Heath is a wonderful character as we see him tackle his PTSD, his loneliness, falling in love and how honourable he is through it all. It’s a tough old journey for this man who deserves to find happiness and love and is at risk of having none of it.

Grace is very much stuck in a rut of doing what people expect. She’s engaged to the man she spent all of her teenage years pining after almost forgetting that as adults people change and she makes compromises to make others happy forgoing her own needs.

I loved watching these two discover each other, discover how their lives could be and how to be stronger individually and make changes in their individual lives so that they could try and come together.  This is another winning book full of heart from Laurie Winter.

A huge thank you to Laurie Winter and Lola’s Blog Tours for the review copy so that I could provide my honest review of this novel.

#BookBlitz: Sunsets at Seaside by Addison Cole @addison_cole @lolasblogtours #Review #Excerpt #Giveaway

I’m so pleased to be bringing this blitz to you today, Thanks to Lola’s Blog Tours for hosting this, I have an excerpt, review and giveaway for you today so don’t miss out below. This is the fourth book in this series, but it is perfectly fine as a standalone, however if you want to catch up, here are the earlier books in the series…

Book One: Read, Write, Love at Seaside (Currently Free)
Book Two: Dreaming at Seaside
Book Three: Hearts at Seaside

Sweet with Heat: Seaside Summers features a group of fun, flirty, and emotional friends who gather each summer at their Cape Cod cottages. They’re sassy, flawed, and so easy to relate to, you’ll be begging to enter their circle of friends!

Sunsets at Seaside by Addison Cole is the sweet edition of New York Times bestselling author Melissa Foster’s steamy romance novel Seaside Sunsets. The stories and characters remain the same, and convey all of the passion you expect between two people in love, without any explicit scenes or harsh language.

Jessica Ayers has lived a sheltered life with little more than cello lessons and practices taking up her day. Now a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, she escapes the prim and proper symphony to vacation in the Seaside community in Wellfleet, Massachusetts, to determine if she is living life to the fullest or missing it altogether.

For the first time since developing the second largest search engine in the world, billionaire Jamie Reed is taking the summer off. He plans to work from the Cape and spend time with his elderly grandmother—and falling in love is not in his plans.

From the moment Jamie and Jessica meet, the attraction is white-hot. Once-overly-focused Jamie can think of little else than sweet, smart, and alluring Jessica, and Jessica discovers a side of herself she never knew existed. But when Jamie’s business encounters trouble and his attorney and best friend intervenes, he proves that the brown-haired beauty is too distracting for Jamie. To make matters worse, it appears that Jessica might not be who she says she is, turning Jamie’s life—and his heart—upside down. In a world where personal information is always one click away, Jamie must decide if he should trust his heart or watch the woman he loves walk away.

Sunsets at Seaside - Blitz Banner

Jessica is one of my favourite female characters in a long time, a cellist in the Boston Symphony Orchestra she has come to Seaside to try and discover what life is meant to be like for someone of her age. Now I felt pretty aligned to Jessica, the cello is one of the instruments I used to play, we sort of share a surname (slightly different spelling) and I just loved that as much as she loves music she also wants a life which is something I completely relate to.

When she bumps into Jamie, sparks fly and it’s inevitable they are going to fall for each other, but Jamie runs one of the most successful tech companies in the world, and she has a career to go back to so how they make it work is a question they need to deal with and it’s one that Jessica isn’t mentally or emotionally prepared for.

I haven’t read any of the other Seaside stories, and while I’m normally a stickler for reading books in series order, this caused me no issues here. All of the other characters were easy to get to know and fell into place really well, being extremely likeable, some funny, some playful, others adorable. I felt part of the crowd as they sat around a fire chatting.

This is a community you want to be part of and as they bring Jessica into their fold it’s clear she wants to be part of it as well. I definitely want to read more of these and find out the back stories of more of these characters.

I loved this book and will be adding more to my shelf and recommending to anybody who enjoys a feel good romance.

Sending a huge thanks to Addison Cole and Lola’s Blog Tours for the eARC so that I could read and honestly review this novel.

“Guess it’s just you and me.”

Jamie’s rich voice slid over her, bringing goose bumps to her arms and heating her up even more. How the heck did he manage to pull off laid-back and sensual at the same time? And why was it such a turn-on? She looked down at her hand, still on his thigh, and felt his muscles flex. The fire was nearly out, just a few embers glowing in the darkness. She should probably go home. It was already far later than she was used to staying up, and she had a big day tomorrow. Didn’t she? Didn’t she always? She had to practice and…No. That wasn’t right. She wasn’t practicing. She was vacationing. She had all the time in the world.

She realized that she hadn’t responded to Jamie’s remark. Instead of answering him, she tilted her head and looked at him. Really looked at him. He was too beautiful, and she was pretty sure it wasn’t just the tequila that made her think so. His hazel eyes were seductively dark and narrow. His tanned skin blended handsomely with the sexy scruff on his jaw, and his full lips were barely parted. She wanted to run her finger along his lips and feel their softness.

“What?” he asked quietly.

“I’m just…” Thinking about touching your scruff. And maybe your lips. And that crease by your mouth when you smile. There it is. Oh, I love that crease. Oh, and your hands. I’m dying to know what your hands feel like. “Thinking…” It was the only word she could manage without making a fool of herself.

“Thinking about throwing your phone at me again?”

#BookBlitz: Worth Remembering by Holly James @HJamesAuthor @lolasblogtours #Review

I’m so pleased to be bringing this blitz to you today, I think this may be the first book blitz where I got to review the book, so that’s pretty cool! Thanks to Lola’s Blog Tours for hosting this and head over to Must Read Faster to check out an Excerpt today.

Running into her head-over-heels first love during a week’s holiday in Mallorca with her spirited friend Lou was not what Samantha Hillcrest had planned. When sparks fly on the idyllic Mediterranean island she wonders how she’ll be able to return home to her husband and grown-up children, pretending her life hasn’t been turned upside down. Caught between family commitments and the red-hot, sizzling chemistry she shares with Gabriel—her love from twenty-five years ago—Samantha faces an impossibly heart-breaking choice.

A stand-alone novel, Worth Remembering is the first story in the English Rose series which follows a group of authentic English women on their complicated romantic journeys.

Worth Remembering - Tour Banner

Samantha is off on holiday with her divorcee friend Lou, off to Mallorca for a week in the sun. She never in a million years expects to run into her first love, the man she fell in love with while she was a holiday rep on the island twenty-five years ago but of course she does, and so a complicated story begins as those old feelings and passions surface between them and she has to decide if her life with her Husband and grown children in England is worth fighting for.

This was such a beautifully written book, whilst you want the beautiful romance there is this shadow looming over the situation in the form of Samantha’s marriage and nobody likes a cheater, especially in book land where we like everything to be nice and pretty. Samantha’s marriage was complicated, and messy and it was clearly not a happy one, yet Samantha was obviously determined to move on from Gabriel and make this marriage work. It was hard to read and whilst I wouldn’t condone running away from a marriage WHY on earth would someone suffer so much loneliness and sadness for the sake of normality?

Her children were lovely and as the book progressed especially towards the end we really see them shine, and see just how wonderful and supportive they are. Her Husband though, what a dilbert, taking Samantha for granted and just not appreciating what was in front of him at all.

I adored Gabriel, he knew what he wanted and he stayed out of the way to give Samantha time but was also not willing to stay gone making sure he reappeared and gave chase, he was very romantic and having lost her once all those years ago he couldn’t bear to lose her again.

Samantha spends much of her time mistaking what she thinks she should do with what she wants, I think it’s probably a mistake lots of us make in life but it was so clear it was what she was doing here and I so wanted her to find her happy.

Overall I loved this book, I felt such an affinity with Samantha, maybe it’s the ex-holiday rep in me, but I just loved her story and her journey so much.

Sending a huge thanks to Holly James and Lola’s Blog Tours for the eARC so that I could read and honestly review this novel.

Emily wakes up in an unknown place without any memory of how she got there. She was supposed to be on her way to a retreat for two weeks after her boss declares she needs it with her latest flare-ups at work. She forces herself to take the time away from her stressful life in spite of the objection from her friends. The last thing she remembers is being at her high school reunion, and the pain that grips her heart when the guy who broke her heart ten years ago shows up looking annoyingly tempting.

Evan didn’t expect her to almost claw his face off at the reunion, but he was surprised at the way Emily reacts to his presence. He asks himself if he cared enough about his high school sweetheart to find out why she had turned into an angry person.

Follow Emily’s journey as she follows her heart to find the person she wants to be held captive by… forever.

Hold Me Captive Forever - Tour Banner

Thirty minutes later, she stood in front of the mirror looking at herself. A wicked smile crept up her face as she ran her palms on the smooth material of Evan’s football jersey she had put on with a bright colored bra that peeked through the perforated material screaming for attention— thanks to Josie’s quirky bra collection at her boutique.

The football jersey was long enough for the hem to hit right above her knees, so she decided to skip wearing the skinny jeans she had set out on the bed. Her dark hair hung wildly, and her eyes were impatient to take in Evan’s look when he sees her in the jersey.

The house was awfully quiet as she stepped out of her room to go back to the study. It was a few minutes past six in the morning when she stood to look at the mess in the study as she put a plan together in her mind to put everything back in order. She went to the other jersey that lay on the floor and pinned it back on the wall.

“You are mine and will be forever, Thompson.” She ran her fingers on the letters stitched onto the sheer material.

An hour later, she was sitting on the floor putting the last set of his coin collection back in the lowest drawer when she heard footsteps approach the study.

She turned to look at him as he stood by the glass doors leading to the study taking a sip of his coffee.

She smiled at him without getting off the floor, and she knew he hadn’t seen what she had on as the desk was blocking his view.

“You clean up real good,” he smirked looking around the study.

“Do I?” she purred as she slowly stood up revealing herself in the loose football gear that drowned her but did not fail to show off her ample curves as she swayed toward him.

She suppressed a chuckle when she saw him swallow with great difficulty.

“Good morning,” she reached up on her toes and brushed her lips on his jawline right below the tip of his mouth making sure her breasts brushed against his arm.

“Didn’t you buy enough clothes yesterday?” His voice was shaky enough to encourage her.

“I might have… I couldn’t remember how it felt to wear your jersey. It was so long ago.” She put one arm around him and placed her palm over his fingers that held his coffee mug.

She held his gaze as she brought his coffee mug to take a sip of the steaming liquid and smiled, licking her lips.

“Thanks for the coffee,” she said and walked away from him toward the kitchen enjoying his burning gaze on her back. He was thrown off, and she knew he would eventually give in, but it was going to take a lot more effort from her.

She expected him to grab her, but she could tell he was exercising a lot of restraint, and she had to crack it before she ran out of time.

#BlogTour: Home Field by Laurie Winter @lauriew_author @lolasblogtours #Review

Welcome to my stop on the Home Field blog tour organised by Lola’s Blog Tours. Today I have my review of this wonderful book for you which I hope you enjoy.

One year after her husband is killed in action, Julie Ellis is back in her hometown and focused on raising her young son. Then Reagan Harrison bursts into her life—a cocky, charming linebacker who leaves her off balance.

As a successful, professional athlete, Reagan believes he has it all. But after meeting Julie, he finds every excuse in the book to spend time with her. Despite his best efforts not to fall too hard, Reagan envisions a future with Julie, along with the little boy he’s come to love as his own.

While Reagan’s protective love begins to mend Julie’s spirit, she can’t suppress her continued deep devotion to her late husband’s memory. And when a letter arrives from beyond the grave, Reagan resolves to provide her with the answers she desperately needs to heal. Now Julie must choose either to keep her heart closed off or remove the lock and fight for a future with Reagan. Can a second chance at true love be just as sweet?

Home Field - Tour Banner

Julie has moved back to her hometown with her son after her Husband was killed in action in Afghanistan. Childhood sweethearts she doesn’t feel like she will ever move on from the devastation and it’s only thanks to her son that she has carried on functioning each day. When she attends a charity gala hosted by her Husband’s favourite football team she meets Reagan, one of their star players, and a rather handsome devil to boot. He becomes instantly besotted with her but winning the heart of a woman whose heart is shattered is quite a struggle.

This was a deeply emotional book, maybe more so because I had a friend who lost her fiancé in Iraq many years ago and watched her go through the devastatingly long process of having to let his memory lie before she was able to move on and meet someone new. It was one of the most heartbreaking things I’ve ever been a party to. I don’t think that kind of loss can ever truly be got over or explained and yet Laurie Winter has captured it so beautifully in this book while opening the door to a breath of fresh air with a new love for this wonderful woman who deserves so much happiness.

Julie is an exceptionally strong character but for all of her strength there is a devastating weakness where she has experienced this loss far beyond anything any of us could imagine. Her love for her son is pure and strong and she doesn’t think of herself at all in anything that she does.

Reagan has something special about him, a guy who has thought little about having a long term relationship and especially children. He’s always played fast and loose but when he meets Julie things start to change, he becomes completely enamoured with her and her family, inserting himself as far into her life as he can possibly get. He is a modern day night in shining armour seeing she needs rescuing from her grief and doing all he can to help her.

This story develops well but I felt that there were times when the expectations that even with how much he loved her would Reagan really wait around the way he does for Julie? She is sometimes quite mean and hurtful and I’m not sure that anybody would take that kind of hurt regardless of how much they love someone. I felt a few times he was a glutton for punishment and maybe he should walk away.

Overall, this is a beautifully told story, you definitely need the tissues for this one though, and the leading man is a stellar person through and through.

A huge thank you to Laurie Winter and Lola’s Blog Tours for the review copy so that I could provide my honest review of this novel.

#BlogTour: Mother of Wolves by J Aislynn d’Merricksson @cala_gobraith @lolasblogtours #Excerpt

Welcome to my stop on the Mother of Wolves blog tour from Lola’s Blog Tours. Today I have an excerpt from this book for you!

It is a year of awakening and change for Kalla kyl’Solidor – the Wolf Who Sleeps. After a fire wyvern attacks her home, she sets on a harsh path to self-discovery.

With the future of their world at stake, Kalla and her magister embark on a journey that will shake the foundations of De Sikkari and shape their destiny.

From the depths of Xibalba to the plains of Arkkadia, and the soaring heights of the sky continent of Argoth, they journey to claim their rightful place in the world, and to put an end to the source of the destruction before chaos claims the realm.

Book 1 of 4 in the Evalyce: Worldshaper series

Mother of Wolves - Tour Banner

Kalla knelt down by the prisoner, where he now lay slumped against the wall. She ran gentle hands over him, assessing the damage. He had many wounds, but most were minor, certainly nothing she couldn’t handle easily. Kalla studied him for a moment, then took a deep breath, fully committing herself to her course. Hand under his chin, Kalla raised his face to look at her.

“What is your name?” she asked softly.

“Ale.. Aleister. Aleister Balflear.” He attempted a wry grin. “The Sky Fox, at your service, milady.”

“Well then, Aleister Balflear, I am Kalla kyl’Solidor and I am in need of a magister. What say you?”

A single brown eye widened, then he broke out in a fit of laughter that dissolved into another bout of coughing.

“Me? A magister? Milady, no offense, but I’m a thief, not a warrior. I fear you would be getting the short end of that deal,” he replied.

“To be honest, I have no wish to take a magister at all, but the Powers that Be say I must. I’m not looking for brute strength. I value cunning and intelligence more and a fox should have more than enough of that.” Her questioning look was rewarded with another half-smile.

“Very well, milady. If it keeps me from Tysin’s clutches, I accept.”

“You must be sure of this. Being magister to a mage means you are bound to them. I will be able to sense you, and you I. There will be times when I will need to rely upon you as a conduit of power, and times when I will need to rely on you for protection. If I should happen to die, so will you.”

He nodded acceptance and sank back against the wall, his strength finally starting to fade.

”Then I guess I’d better make sure that doesn’t happen anytime soon.” There was the hint of a grin in his words.

About J Aislynn d’Merricksson

J. Aislynn D Merricksson - Author ImageAllemerra! That’s ‘hello’ in Argosian. Argoth is one of the countries of the world of De Sikkari, where my Evalyce novels take place. It is a vibrant world, as real to me as the mundane world here. The ‘J’ in my name stands for Julianna, but I prefer Aislynn.

I have a degree in anthropology you see. I approach my writing from the viewpoint of an anthropologist. My sister calls me a ‘biblioanthropologist’. I like the word. It fits perfectly! What are writers but consummate anthropologists? Writers must employ the skills of the ethnographer, the cultural anthropologist, the archaeologist, the linguist, and sometimes even the psychologist and the naturalist in order to weave their stories. I do not craft this world. I merely found the key to it and happen to have the skills (and courage) to share it with others.

I was destined for a career in forensic anthropology. A medical issue thwarted those plans and I ended up with a bachelor’s in archaeology, and later a master’s and a doctorate in philosophy. Along the crooked path away from what I found familiar, and into the unknown, I

discovered a knack for poetry, and a gift for writing. I’ve honed these raw skills to something worth sharing, and found the key to a world I’ve fallen in love with.

There was a decade-long love affair with teaching, in which I crafted many of my own classes related to mythic studies, anthropology, archaeology, and ethics. My favourite class crafting was for an intro to mythology class. I did not want a boring listing such as Intro to Mythology. So…. I tweeted several famous people, authors, actors, and the like, the question- what would you name a class on mythology if you wanted to be creative. The last person I ever expected to respond was Mark Sheppard (Crowley on Supernatural. His response was ‘Bob’. So I took the challenge, and in the end, I had a class called BoB, a gift from the King of Hell. The full name was Blessing of Bragi, Bragi being the poet and keeper of stories in Norse mythology.

An observant person may notice that my eyes are heterochromatic. One is blue and one is hazel. Now, true heterochromia is rare. In my case it is a personal choice. That medical issue was a serious one. At the age of twenty, I lost my right eye and had prosthesis put in. That gave me the opportunity to express my eccentricity and insist on an eye that was a different colour. It also forced me to confront one of my greatest fears- that of losing my eyesight altogether.

I think I have Loki to thank for that. I follow a Norse spiritual path called Rokkatru. Brother Wildfire always has lessons for me. Fun fact-Loki is also known as the Lord of Laughter. My lessons generally are to teach me to laugh at the mild or major setbacks in life. It’s a lesson I’m slowly learning.

My crooked path has led me to a wonderful home in Northern California, where I live with my sister, bond-brother, bond-mate, niece, a guinea pig, and two kitty cats. Yes, we have a large house! Sometimes it feels a little crowded, but most often it is nice to have the closeness of family.

I spend my nights as an innkeep, which usually gives me ample time to write, or to read. I love to read! I was an early reader and I always have a book with me. That’s a passion that lead me to becoming a professional book reviewer, freelancing for several review groups such

as the San Francisco Book Review. Such bliss! Paid to read! What could be better?

Synmerra! That’s good-bye in Argosian 🙂

Feel free to stop by Port Jericho! Always happy to see new people. http://www.aislynndmerricksson.com

Do magic, vampires, and shifters really exist in the seedy underbelly of New Orleans?

Jenna is many things, Lead singer in the all-girls band Voodoo Dolls, shopkeeper extraordinaire, and sister to three awesome orphans, but what she isn’t is a wizard. Because magic isn’t real and people who think it’s real are posers, drunks, and the best customers at the Voodoo Doll House.

Until, you know, someone hits her with a death curse.
