TAG: Liebster Award Take Four

Wow, these just keep coming don’t they?! But they always have different questions so it’s just fun to keep taking part! The very lovely Angie Dokos nominated me this time. I love Angie she is so supportive of other bloggers, plus she is an author aswell, and I promise to get to reading her latest book which is waiting very patiently on my Kindle (public pledges they are a great kick in the backside)!

The Rules

  • Thank the person who nominated you and link their blog
  • Answer the 11 questions the person asked you
  • Nominate 11 people (comment on their blog to let them know)
  • Ask the people you have nominated 11 questions.

Angie’s Questions

What is your favorite vacation destination?

Hands down Greece, specifically Samos which is where I used to live, although we have been visiting parts of Greece we haven’t been to in recent years and doing island hopping from whichever island we’ve based ourselves at, including trying to spend at least a few days in Samos. Athens is also a wonderful city and amazing for a city break, I’ve only ever visited Athens in the winter though so at some point I would love to go in summer.

What is your favorite book to movie conversion? Why?

OK, I don’t watch too many movies, and this is probably controversial because stuff was skipped other stuff was changed and I am a die hard fan of the book but The Hobbit. I bloody loved those movies. I’m actually quite good at separating book from movie so if things are different I am pretty good at saying “OK I get why they needed to do that for the purposes of the screen adaptation” and just moving on and enjoying the movie for what it is. I try not to get hung up on every scene amendment, dialogue change etc. That must be exhausting right?

What’s your favorite childhood memory?

Picking up a Saxophone for the first time. I was 14 and already played several instruments by this point. I remember my teacher handing me the instrument and going over the basics with me, it’s very similar to the clarinet which I played to diploma level. He popped some music in front of me and asked me to give it a go so we could see where I was starting from. It was an instant fit, other than a few fingering hiccoughs I was playing like I’d played it for years. I had my diploma within a year, was first chair in the school band and invited into the jazz band, the only girl and non sixth form student. I loved playing that saxophone so much.

When you aren’t reading/ blogging, what hobbies and activities take up your time?

Writing is consuming my time at the moment, I’ve never really given into my writing before, well not like this at least! Otherwise walking and hiking, and recently working out, since losing a lot of weight I’ve really got hot on working out again and as much as I bitch about it I love how it’s making me feel. And going to gigs, music will always be my first love!

What would your dream job be?

I would love to work in mental health, I volunteer at a mental health charity and it’s so rewarding, if I’m honest not getting paid doesn’t bother me right now. But if I lose my benefits that’s going to become a problem!

And because I’m greedy, writing, I think most of us bloggers feel this way, wouldn’t being paid to write be awesome?

If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?

I’d like some Jessica Jones style powers! I’ve always loved Jessica Jones, her powers are super cool yet understated.

What is your favorite characteristic about yourself?

Yikes! I have no idea, I think it’s probably my new found ability to think before I speak. This is something I have learned in the last year and it’s already saving me a lot of arguments. This is not to say I won’t tell someone if they are being a complete douchebag because I totally will but I just think the face I’ve learned to pause and consider my response before I talk is huge.

If you could give new bloggers a tip, what would it be?

Be yourself. I think a lot of new bloggers try to conform to a type, or to copy other bloggers. Ultimately it’s important to be yourself, let your personality shine through.

What is the most memorable book you’ve ever read and what made it so memorable?

The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks this was the first proper fantasy novel I ever read and it got me hooked, I was maybe 13 when I read it. I’m planning to re-read because I just want to re-live that feeling I got. I remember getting butterflies in my stomach and thinking I’d discovered the holy grail or something equally special! I never looked back after that.

If you could bring any fictional character to dinner who would it be and why?

Wydrin from Jen Williams’ Copper Cat trilogy. I have a serious girl crush on this character and there is no way I’d miss the chance to have her over for dinner!

What’s one item on your bucket list?

To visit Australia

Liebster Award – Take Three

I’m continuing my mission to get on top of all my tag/award nominations, and the next one in the pile was this Liebster Award nomination from the really lovely Mischenko at Read Rant Rock and Roll. This is actually my third Liebster Award nomination but as each one has different questions it’s fun to keep going! If you don’t follow Mischenko already you absolutely should the site is deeply interesting and Mischenko writes so well and has some great features you won’t want to miss.

The Rules

  • Thank the person who nominated you and link their blog
  • Answer the 11 questions the person asked you
  • Nominate 11 people (comment on their blog to let them know)
  • Ask the people you have nominated 11 questions

Mischenko’s Questions

1. What are your favorite hobbies?

Ooh I have a few, reading…obviously! I love heavy metal and going to gigs is one of my absolute favourite things to do in the world. I also love walking/hiking. I try to get out and do several miles a few time per week. And writing, I love writing, even if it’s just on the blog, I have several projects going that I’m working on so it’s fun to chop and change.

2. What job do you think you’d be terrible at?

Teacher, or anything with children…I’m not good with kids. The younger they are the worse I am with them. I’m also terribly short tempered so teaching would be the worst thing I could do.

3. What is the most annoying habit that other people have?

Chewing with their mouth open! It really bugs me that so many adults haven’t learned to chew properly! haha

4. What’s your favorite drink?

You’ll think I’m quite sad now, but water! I love water!

5. What songs have you completely memorized?

OMG too many to list! I spend an awful lot of time moshing around the house and bellowing out the songs!

6. What pets do you have?

I don’t 😦

My place is tiny, like really tiny, smaller than a shipping container small. So it would be really unfair on any animal to have it cooped up in somewhere so small. I would love to have a dog or five. I love german shepherd’s especially but there really is no space. Maybe if we get the money to upgrade  in future.

7. Who’s your go to band or artist when you can’t decide on something to listen to?

Oooh good question! If I can’t decide on something to listen to I usually hit shuffle! I have a playlist with a bunch of my favourites on so it will be Amon Amarth, Nightwish, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Alter Bridge, Apocalyptica, Avenged Sevendold, Delain, Disturbed, Gojira, Korn, Lacuna Coil, Shinedown, Skindred, Slipknot, Stone Sour, Within Temptation and a whole bunch more!

8. What TV shows are you into now, or have been in the past?

I’m always stupidly behind with TV because I don’t watch very much, right now I’m watching and really into American Gods, Game of Thrones, Vikings (when it comes back), The Handmaid’s Tale, Wynnona Earp.

9. What would be your ideal way to spend a weekend?

Out of the country! I can’t afford to do it often but I love getting away to another country, preferably one with sun and just spending the weekend in a nice beachside cafe reading, eating good food and soaking in the sun.

10. What’s your favorite holiday?

Greece, every time. I don’t mind where I go in Greece, although going to Samos where I used to live is always really special because I get to spend time with friends eating good food and catching up on the time since we last saw each other.

11. What’s your favorite movie?

Haha…I’m a total cliche and it fits with my blog! It’s either Top Gun or Legend… haha! My favourite movies basically haven’t changed since I was 10.

Liebster Award – Take Two!

OK, so I know I did a Liebster award recently but it was rolled up with another award in a kind of mash up so I thought why not accept the nomination for this one which is a straight up Liebster Award, and anyway, I kind of enjoy these as a bit of light relief from chasing my tail with books all the time! Thanks to Jay over at This Is My Truth Now for the nomination. If you haven’t checked out his blog it’s pretty damn awesome, I always end up leaving essays instead of comments so his writing is inspiring!

The Questions

What made you start blogging?
I honestly don’t remember, I used to love getting in on things early, I always had the first new phone, the best laptops, working in digital marketing I was really up on what was going on new in the world and I found out about blogging really early on. I know I set my first blog up in 2002, it was about the same time as a couple of really close friends of mine, one another marketer, the other a techy and I do remember we thought we’d be able to keep in touch with each other, we had no idea how much of the world would open up to us. I made a friend within a couple of months in Oklahoma and she is still one of my best friends and yes we have met in person several times.

What are the primary content areas on your site?
This one is all books, everything on this site is steered around books, I primarily read Fantasy and Romance, I always say they are a strange mix but they work for me so that’s all that matters. I have another blog which is much more personal and 90% of it is about mental health and living with bipolar. I’m mixing that one up slightly at the moment and putting a few more feature pieces in at the moment to try and make it a bit more interesting and to fill in a few gaps I’ve been having so we’ll see how it goes.

What other languages can you speak, read or write?
Great question! I learned French at school and I can still speak about 10 words, no kidding, I’ve only ever been to France once and I was determined to speak French while I was there and it was the most hilarious experience of my life, I had people in shops and restaurants rolling with laughter. I also used to live in Greece and while I was there I learned conversational Greece, it’s been about 17 years though and a lot of that has gone from my head completely. I’m not good at languages and unless I’m speaking them all the time I can’t hold on to them. I also used to know some BSL (British Sign Language) but again without using it, it has run away!

Which color best describes your choice in books?

What is your favorite of the 7 deadly sins, and why?
Oh I’m torn here… Lust or Wrath… Lust because well duh I’m a Romance reader! and Wrath because well I read Fantasy I love a bit of anger, and death and blood!

What other job would you want to have?
Right now I’m volunteering at a mental health charity, that’s kind of my dream job. To do what I’m good at to help people with mental health problems like I have that would be awesome. I’ve also trained as a peer worker so I can actually work one to one with people so that would be pretty cool too.

What foods can’t you stomach no matter how hard you try? (You must have tried it before)
Pineapple…seriously it’s the devil’s food. I can’t even eat something it’s been in and then been removed from it’s disgusting. I’m very passionate about how much I hate Pineapple this could go on for a long time but I’ll end it here.

What zoo animal would you most want as a pet?

Who do you live with?
The Hubs

Describe the perfect book.
Epic Fantasy with a romantic storyline lots of strong worldbuilding, swordplay, magic, bloody battles and twists you don’t see coming for miles.

Which blog that you follow is your must-read every day? Only 1!
Books Vertigo & Tea I totally adore Danielle’s blog and we read very similar books and seem to react to them in the same ways so I can rely on if Danielle likes a book then I probably will.

Liebster Award and The Sunshine Blogger Tag / Award

A big Thank You to the very lovely Avi over at Panic At The Bookstore for nominating me for this. These two tags seem to have got merged together here under one hate so the Liebster Award and Sunshine Blogger Award

I do enjoy taking part in these as a way of just sharing a little more about myself and books and blogging. I have put nominations at the end as it is a bit of fun….BUT…this is a bit of fun so there is no pressure intended and if you are not mentioned and want to take part you absolutely should!

Getting into the tags,

The rules:

  • Thank the person who nominated you and answer the 11 questions they’ve written for you.
  • Nominate 11 people and give them 11 different questions to answer.

What was the book that got you into reading and how did you find out about it?
I’ve always read, the first book I know about being obsessed with (and this is quite funny) is Penelope Strawberry and Roger Radish by Jayne Fisher. My Mum used to read it to me every day when I was a toddler and I would apparently go nuts if she didn’t. We both knew every word by heart (my Mum still does).  Books were always huge for us growing up. I literally don’t remember a time in my life where a book wasn’t glued to my hand.

What goals did you have when you first started blogging and have you achieved it?
I didn’t have any. My first blog was one I set up in 2003, blogging as a whole was really new back then, nobody really knew what they were getting into and what was going to happen. It was unchartered territory. I hit really lucky and within a year had made a friend who is still one of my closest friends even though we are thousands of miles apart physically.

What inspired you to start a blog and did you learn anything while blogging?
I originally started blogging because a friend and I had read an article in a marketing trade magazine about this new craze (remember it was 2003 blogging was really new) we both set up blogs to try it out. And have both swapped and changed blogs and topics as the years have moved on. What I’ve learned is that it’s easy to get comfortable with perceived anonymity but you’re never 100% anonymous so to always be wary and never say anything you wouldn’t be willing to say in real life.

Apart from reading, what other things do you enjoy?
I’m a massive heavy metal fan, that used to be my blogging focus in fact, I used to review albums, interview bands and I wrote for a few magazines over the years aswell. Living with bipolar I’m also really passionate about mental health and just trying to get people to see that there is nothing wrong with talking about mental health in the same way you would talk about physical health. I love gaming, although I’m not so great at it! I pretty much stick with Fantasy RPG’s and don’t stray out of my comfort zone!

If you could be transported to one bookish world, which would it be?
The Four Lands where Terry Brooks Shannara novels are set. So many amazing things happen in this place and it was the first fantasy land to really capture my imagination.

What is one thing you struggle with as a reader and one thing that you love?
I think my struggle is similar to most other readers, and that’s getting through my huge TBR! What I love is discovering amazing new authors!

Do you believe that books have the power to change your life? Have you read any such book?
Absolutely, it’s a bit cliched but The Catcher in the Rye changed things for me big time. I was 14 the first time I read it and going through a really rough time seeing therapists, having to deal with some really nasty family stuff and reading this book about someone dealing with similar issues to me really helped. My English teacher set me assignments that were different to the rest of my class and very personal to my situation but relevant to the book to help me work through my situation and it helped me understand how to properly analyse a book and how much a book can change your own perspective on life. I still turn to that book now when things get really tough.

Are you a sucker for happy books or one that leaves your heart broken?
I like both although I’m quite dark and like unhappy endings, everyone dies in the end, the bad guy gets away, that kind of thing. I read one recently where nobody survived and I was punching the air with glee. I loved it!

If you had the chance to live in either your reality or favorite fictional world, which one would you choose? ( I think I have read this in some tag before but I like this question so sorry for the copy haha)
Fictional definitely…they’d have dragons in my fictional world!

Do you believe in buying books or getting them from a library?
I would like to say library because without the library I would have had nothing to read as a child, but my local libraries (I’ve been to at least four) don’t have anything I read in stock, it’s completely impossible, and trying to order books is so expensive it’s actually cheaper to buy the books. So while I believe in the library I opt for buying them.

I don’t believe that all readers have to be introverted. It’s Friday night and there’s a really fun party going on in the neighborhood, would you go with your friends and attend it or stay home and read?
10 years ago I would have gone to the party, but now I would stay home and read!
