#BookBlitz: R&R Book Tours Launch Party @shanannigans81

I’m sure most of you already know Shannon over at Reads & Reels, this means that you should know she has recently set up her own blog tour business R&R Book Tours. Shannon is easily one of my favourite people in the blog world she is so cool (I say this because she geeky like me, reads similar books to me, watches the same sort of films to me and so on!) Her aim with R&R Book Tours is to support indie authors which is awesome and this launch party blitz is a coming together of some great indie authors she has supported on her own blog recently and has now brought into her tour fold. I’ve actually got some of these books in my TBR thanks to her reviews so encourage you to check them out! Finally I want to wish Shannon the very best of luck with her new venture and I look forward to taking part and seeing what she brings in!

The Old Man At The End Of The World - AK SilversmithDescription

THE GOOD LIFE meets DOUGLAS ADAMS meets SHAUN OF THE DEAD! – Dave F, Amazon

Gerald Stockwell-Poulter couldn’t help but feel it was extraordinary just how quickly his life had changed. One moment he was earthing up leeks in the West Sussex sunshine and the next he was rooted to the spot as Rodney Timmins from the end allotment ambled towards him, arms outstretched, blood pouring from a hole in his neck and a look in his eye which suggested that he was less after help and more after a helping of Gerald.

Now, as Gerald’s life takes a quick turn for the worse, he must do things he has never done before. After 87 largely well-behaved years as a model citizen, less than four hours into the ‘zompocalypse’ and he has already killed a neighbour, rescued a moody millennial drug dealer and forged an unlikely allegiance with a giant ginger Scotsman. And it isn’t even tea time.

Join Gerald as he and his newfound allies navigate the post-apocalyptic English countryside in their hilarious bid to stay off the menu.

Seven Hours: Challenge Accepted by Angelina Kerner

Description

One pill every 7 hours. That could be all it takes to give Chanel the chance to finally see the world around her.

Chanel is an independent 19-year-old, despite what her overprotective mother and senator father may think. Being the daughter of a Senator comes with its own problems, one simple afternoon out with friends becomes overwhelming when they’re swarmed by reporters.

Keeping the secret of the experimental treatment close to her chest, she is able to fool everyone but her hawkeyed bodyguard, Leon, that has now been assigned to protect her.

Chanel doesn’t want a bodyguard, but will she get more than she bargained for?

About Angelina Kerner

I wish I could sit down with you and have a nice warm cup of tea or a steaming mug of coffee, but since that’s not possible, how about a cyber-hug? I love hugs and coffee, a lot of coffee.

So, as an introduction, let’s start with, “I love to read and write”. I have so many stories inside my head that sometimes it’s impossible to know what’s real anymore. That doesn’t stop me from enjoying a great novel, though. Reading and writing is not all that I love, though it comes a close second. I love dancing, needlework, spending time with my family and friends, and most of all, the holidays. That’s when my family is all smiles. Smiles are the best, don’t you think?

I started writing stories for teen girls because I started writing in high school and I understood teen girls… or at least I thought so at the time. Throw in a hot guy, romance, and drama to get the perfect hypnosis formula for girls and some boys. Later, as I grew up, my characters grew up with me. I write a variety of books for all ages, mostly fantasy and chick-lit. An odd combination? You be the judge.

Currently, I divide my time between my family, work, writing, and a lot of cats. I’m also a new mother and you get to read about my journey on my blog once a month!

Deadman’s Tome: Monsters Exist by Theresa Braun & Mr. Deadman

Description

From the time we are young, we fear the monster under the bed or in the closet, making it impossible to sleep without a nightlight. Then, we hear stories of Bigfoot, and maybe even the Mothman around campfires. When we are adults, we wonder if there might actually be supernatural creatures lurking in the shadows. Are these tall tales and urban legends only metaphors for what horrific things humanity is capable of—or do monsters exist?

Go to some terrifying places with this cast of authors. You will be dragged into mystifying realities where demonic fairies hide, where devil monkeys lure carnival-goers to their demise, where Goatmen seek to destroy their prey, and where the goddess of death puts out a hit on victims of her choice. These shocking tales will have you biting your nails and locating that childhood nightlight. Because, in the end, we all know monsters do exist.

#WeekendBlitz: Blood Bank by Zoë Markham @ZoeMarkham @Kristell_Ink @NeverlandBT #Excerpt

Welcome back to day two of the weekend blitz for Blood Bankorganised by Neverland Blog Tours. Today I have an excerpt from Blood Bank for you and I was over the moon with the excerpt I was given as it features my favourite character from the book. If you want to find out more about my thoughts about the book and you missed my review then check out my review which I posted yesterday.

Description

Benjamin is a programmer moonlighting as a security guard at Dystopia, a seedy club that caters to the down-and-outs, the desperates, the addicts. He’s been building his reputation, saving for a way out – but when he rescues a young woman from the nearby estate, he may just have stepped too far out of line…

Lucy is ordinary; a girl with a deadbeat boyfriend, a normal life and college studies. But when her world takes an odd twist, she starts to wonder about the people she’s meeting, the situations she’s in, the odd aversions and attacks happening around her. They’re just coincidences…aren’t they?

And Zack is in deep trouble. He’s losing his girlfriend, drowning in debt, and has dwindling job prospects – and that’s not the worst of it. His debt is to people who won’t ever forget it, and who want the things closest to Zack’s heart: his blood – and his life.

In the heart of Swindon, an ancient order hides in plain sight, spreading their influence through the streets like a disease. But despite their widespread power they are catching up with the modern world: the vampires are going online, and the Order is about to become more powerful than even they would have dreamed…

Blood Bank - Tour Banner

Excerpt

Ben locked the front door behind him and grimaced as he was hit by the full force of half a dozen warring stereos. How can they listen to that stuff? It wasn’t music, it was just noise, discordant, repetitive and pointless. Like them. No wonder they were always so angry – how could anyone not be when that reverberated around them day in, day out?

Ben’s small two-bed terrace was in arguably the worst possible part of town. Penryll was a sprawling, run-down council estate, dotted with a few private properties and banked by a lush green which was impressive in the daytime, but lethal at night. Ben had survived almost ten years on the estate now. No mean feat, as it wasn’t a place for the faint of heart or gentle of soul. When the cash from the first round of web sign-ups had come in, Viktor had thrown him a generous advance, and Ben had found a company who soundproofed domestic walls and blown the lot. He couldn’t have lived there without it. His home was his own personal oasis of calm in a microclimate of depravity. It had put his savings plan back a little, but saved what remained of his sanity in the process. And if Viktor continued to let him develop the sites, it should be less than a year now before he’d finally be able to afford to move out of the estate.

It hadn’t been easy to convince Viktor of the benefits to an online branch of the business. Always one to favour the direct approach, he had little time for hiding behind computers. But Ben had taken things painfully slowly, researching his projects meticulously and carefully projecting a set of figures that would hold Viktor’s attention. Ben recognised the web as the future of the business. That was exactly why he’d been brought in to the operation, of course, to see opportunities the others wouldn’t. And now that the money was starting to roll in, Viktor was slowly coming onside. Real expansion of the online business was on the cards at last.

One more year, Ben repeated to himself like a mantra. One more year and then he could think about moving to the other side of town, or maybe go one better and get out of Swindon altogether. There were some peaceful-looking little villages on the outskirts that would be his idea of heaven. But Ben didn’t qualify for heaven. That was why, in some small way, he felt relieved to be living smack bang in the middle of hell.

#WeekendBlitz: Blood Bank by Zoë Markham @ZoeMarkham @Kristell_Ink @NeverlandBT #Review

I have been looking forward to this book for a really long time and signing up for this blitz organised by the very lovely Jenny at Neverland Blog Tours was a no brainer. As it’s a weekend blitz I’m taking part on both days because, well Zoë is an absolutely awesome person as well as a fantastic author and I really wanted to show my support for this book. Today I’m reviewing Blood Bank and tomorrow I have an excerpt and you really won’t want to miss that!

Blood Bank - Tour Banner

Review

Zoë Markham told me absolutely ages ago that her next book was about vampires in Swindon. That was all she told me and that was enough to have me chomping at the bit. I love Zoë’s writing style, the way she teases you through the book and leaves you hanging where other authors would fill in gaps.

I sat down to read Blood Bank and immediately got pulled into the seedy underworld in Swindon. Unlike Zoë’s previous books this was aimed at a slightly older audience, definitely more new adult than young adult but it hits the mark and still sits firmly in the horror and paranormal genres.

Taking a unique twist on loan sharks, Zoë Markham has given us a character in Zack who is up to his neck in debt to the vampires. His only way to keep the interest off his debt is by giving blood. But he has no hope of ever clearing his debt, and if he runs away or kills himself his debt will pass to a loved one such as his girlfriend Lucy.

Lucy is sick of Zack, he’s become lazy, uninterested in anything, and now he’s dumped her in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night. Because that isn’t dangerous at all.

Then there is Ben who is a vampire, he works at the vampire club, but isn’t like most of the vampires, he’s solitary, a coder and prefers to be alone until he rescues a human and feels a connection that makes him go against the boss which could be lethal for him and her.

This is a short book, only 156 pages but a lot happens in those pages to keep you riveted to the page. As these three characters come closer together their stories weaving together the story becomes more terrifying the vampires in this story are not fluffy and sparkly. These are mean and terrifying vampires, the kind who will rip your head off for looking at them the wrong way. They are devious and clever, and not at all kind or sweet. Well with the exception of Ben maybe, who definitely seems to have a pinch of humanity in him.

We meet Zack at a point where he is utterly desperate, it’s hard to like him but it’s also hard to dislike him. I felt desperately sorry for him but he was in a deep hole which he had dug himself and getting out was going to be almost impossible. The problem was he was pulling Lucy into the hole with him.

Lucy is a strong young lady, the youngest character in the book but she in some ways is the strongest and full of gumption. She knows her own mind and is willing to stand up for herself completely.

Ben was my favourite character, because he was a vampire? possibly but I think because he was a little geeky and a little insecure but also had a strength that he didn’t like to show unless it was completely necessary. But when he did it was terrifying and enticing all at once. He was quietly brave and yet he makes some decisions which could make you question whether he is good or evil in the end.

Zoë Markham’s writing didn’t disappoint, as with her previous books, so many questions were raised around morality, mental health, and loyalty. Many weren’t answered directly leaving the reader to decide how this story pans out.

Another excellent offering from Zoë Markham which I enjoyed as much as I expected to! I’m really quite hoping for a sequel to this one.

#Review: HEX by Thomas Olde Heuvelt @Thomas_Novelist @HodderBooks

Description

The greats of fiction Stephen King and George R. R. Martin lead the fanfare for HEX, so be assured that Thomas Olde Heuvelt’s debut English novel is both terrifying and unputdownable in equal measure.

Whoever is born here, is doomed to stay until death. Whoever comes to stay, never leaves.

Welcome to Black Spring, the seemingly picturesque Hudson Valley town haunted by the Black Rock Witch, a seventeenth-century woman whose eyes and mouth are sewn shut. Blind and silenced, she walks the streets and enters homes at will. She stands next to children’s beds for nights on end. So accustomed to her have the townsfolk become that they often forget she’s there. Or what a threat she poses. Because if the stitches are ever cut open, the story goes, the whole town will die.

The curse must not be allowed to spread. The elders of Black Spring have used high-tech surveillance to quarantine the town. Frustrated with being kept in lockdown, the town’s teenagers decide to break the strict regulations and go viral with the haunting. But, in so doing, they send the town spiraling into a dark nightmare.

Review

I’ve had HEX on my ARC shelf for over a year, waiting patiently and I will admit that I was being a little bit of a wuss, slightly afraid of what I was going to find in those pages! But I finally put on my big girl pants, I manned up and started reading and well, what a bloody brilliant book.

Black Spring, to look at, is a normal town in the Hudson Valley, except they are cursed, there is a 300-year-old witch named Katherine, who appears in their homes, walks their streets. Her eyes and mouth are stitched to prevent her from causing chaos. But once someone moves to Black Spring they can never move away.

Now, regular readers of this blog will know I tend to flip things on their side, and while I found Katherine immensely creepy (and as someone who suffers with psychosis and sees people who aren’t there, is slightly freaked out that a Katherine is going to appear by the bed now) I felt intensely protective of Katherine as the book progressed. I felt like this was a woman who had been cursed herself and the town wasn’t cursed by her but as a result of what had happened to her.

Although Katherine is the focus of the story I felt like the people of the town were where the main story sat. This story was about what happens when there is a kind of marshal law, or even a mob rules. What happens when the laws of the land don’t apply and people go against what is morally right and get carried away with being cruel instead jumping into the idea of an eye for an eye. It’s as though our author has looked at where evil really comes from in these stories.

This book gets uncomfortable and hard to read in parts, it doesn’t hold any punches and things happen that made me feel ill but they aren’t going too far, they fit with the story and the situation perfectly. Not once did I feel that things had gone outside the realms of reality.

There were subtle references to original Grimm’s Fairy Tales, which obviously didn’t end well, in some ways this was like a modern adult version one. It did remind me of them in the way it read.

The writing was engaging and between the author being a fluent English speaker and Nancy Forest-Flier who acted as translator for the novel you would never know this had been written in Dutch originally.

I can’t recommend this highly enough, a gripping, psychological journey.

A huge thanks to Thomas Olde Heuvelt and Hodder & Stoughton for the ARC so that I could read and honestly review this novel.
