Change is in the air…

London, 1930s:

Natalie Flacker is tempted by the glamour of the new keep fit movement, but when she is dismissed from her prestigious job in PE she loses the life she so carefully built. Echoes of the war’s destruction still reverberate through her life, and now she is homeless, jobless and without prospects.

But connections made on a summer holiday, with her best friend Delphi, create opportunities. When Natalie is offered a summer job at a lido at the seaside, she jumps at the chance. But is she up to the challenge of taking on a group of unfit women in need of her help?

Set against the backdrop of the beginnings of the pioneering keep fit movement; this is a feel-good reminder of just what’s possible when you find the courage to follow your heart.

Spend a very British summer with The Lido Girls!

Review

Natalie is a PE teacher in 1935 England when she loses her job she loses her sense of purpose but a job offer from her best friend’s brother to spend the summer at a lido in St Darlstone is the best one she has. So she and Delphi get set for a summer by the sea.

Set at a time when life was dramatically changing for women the historical elements of this book were fascinating and the supporting cast in this book is wonderful, full of life and laughs all the way through. Jack and Delphi are fantastic characters, Jack with his rugged charm and obsession with diving, Delphi with an unusual illness and need to break away from overprotective parents. Both embracing Natalie close and wanting her to feel a part of their family.

I struggled with Natalie though, I found it hard to connect with her emotionally, and so as she made decisions along the way I questioned them and wondered why. There are a couple of significant decisions she makes and I don’t understand what drives them, or what her own emotion is behind them. The words are there but I didn’t feel it, and being a feeler this fell flat for me and meant that I lost some of the enjoyment from the read.

I loved the way the book was directed, I loved the premise and I especially love how the book resolves itself I just really wish I could have felt more emotion from it.

Sending huge thanks to Allie Burns, HQ Digital and Neverland Blog Tours for the eARC so that I could read and honestly review this novel.

Tortured duke Gibb Alford has vowed never to love again… until a beautiful French knife thrower brings him to his knees

When Gibb Alford, Duke of Menteith, saves a beautiful French knife thrower from the unwanted attentions of a fellow aristocrat he is ill-prepared for the immediate tug of attraction to the beautiful Evangeline. Widowed, he has sworn off love forever, so he can well do without this temptation.

Evangeline certainly doesn’t want the complication of being in the sights of one smoky-eyed Scottish Duke. She’s a lady on a mission, with no time for love or dalliance.

However, fate and life have other plans and gradually Gibb and Evangeline become a couple.

As each struggle with the demons of their pasts, Evangeline finds life in the ton difficult. The spurned aristocrat Gibb saved her from, is not prepared to give in and retire gracefully. And while Gibb fights the man, he also declares war on his own emotions. When Evangeline’s past is revealed to her, everything changes. She has a decision to make.

Fight for Gibb—or flee to a safe but unfulfilled future.

As for her Duke… All is fair in love and war—right?

Review

I love when an author finds a way to make a regency romance with a spectacularly strong female and Raven McAllan has done this with Evangeline. A feisty, French, knife thrower, she doesn’t let anything at all get in her way and even when she is put in a compromising position she can easily deal with it without the need of help from anybody, least of all a man. She is very much a modern woman in a historical setting and this made me love her even more.

Gibb Alford is a Duke who blames himself for his wife’s death, as a result, he has no interest in remarrying and merely does his time with social functions and shows no interest in the many women who throw themselves in his path. When he meets Evangeline though his pull towards her is unmistakable and he is stuck in an awkward position of pursuing his feelings or continuing to close himself off.

I really loved watching these two struggle with their own ambitions versus what their emotions were telling them. It was a roller-coaster for the pair of them to fight how they felt because the attraction is not just physical they have a strong personal connection as they build a strong friendship.

Raven McAllan has built a strong relationship here which is based on far more than the physical and watching two people fight and resist it is interesting and emotional for the reader. This is a wonderful story and beautiful to watch them discover whether they can overcome their own barriers to be there for each other.

About Raven McAllan

Raven McAllan - Author Image

Well what can I say?

I’m growing old disgracefully and loving it.

Dh and I live on the edge of a Scottish forest, and rattle around in a house much too big for us.

Our kids have grown up and flown the nest, but roll back up when they want to take a deep breath and smell the daisies so to speak.

I write in my study, which overlooks the garden and the lane. I’m often seen procrastinating, by checking out the wild life, looking—only looking—at the ironing basket and assuring tourists that indeed, I’m not the bed and breakfast. That would mean cooking fried eggs without breaking the yolks, and disturbing the dust bunnies as they procreate under the beds. Not to be thought of.

Being able to do what I love, and knowing people get pleasure from my writing is fantastic. Long may it last.

Why I Love Writing Historical Fiction by Victoria Hanlen

I love writing historical fiction because I enjoy escaping into the past.

For me, sinking into a good historical is like visiting another world, an alternate reality as rich and tasty as the first spoonful of chocolate mousse.

I like creating a story that takes me out of the humdrum, day-to-day, same-old, same-old to a place and time where gallantry, courtesy and decorum ruled.

Who doesn’t love a witty rake or clever rogue or the romance of being swept up onto a horse and carried away by a handsome prince? And who doesn’t want to experience the perfect fantasy—love’s first kiss and hearts blossoming with forbidden desire?

In the past, society’s rules were harsher, more clearly defined. Rejecting them risked ruin, even death. But in the world of a historical romance the story will always end well—there will always be a happily ever after.

Another reason I likr writing historical fiction is the language. The words are often slightly antiquated with an almost poetic music and cadence. Their complexity is a clear signal that we’ve left the 21st century for the days of yore.

I find it thrilling when my characters come alive. When I feel what they feel—like the sensation of being whisked off to a ball in a golden carriage, wearing the most beautiful gown and shoes imaginable…a one of a kind gown and shoes no one else is wearing. (Yeah. It’s happened to me.)

And how about the clothes? In the mid-eighteen hundreds, (the time in which I write) a girl could be a girl. Women wore lovely gowns with intricate workmanship, tailoring, ribbons and furbelows, petticoats and corsets. Advances in dyes created a larger color spectrum for materials and textiles. The sewing machine made it possible for more than the wealthy to own comely gowns. Men sported livelier gear with fancy waistcoats and colorful trousers. Formal wear included black tailcoats with white shirts, cravats and waistcoats. Bonnets could be as frilly as the woman dared while the men usually wore a top hat.

Some might find the research daunting. I’ve always enjoyed it, as well as reading history books and biographies. It’s fun to explore historical sites where I might place my characters. There’s always something new to learn, and it helps me discover the finer details.

All in all, a good day for me is writing a great scene rooted in the past that urges me to work a little longer to find out what happens next.
