#Review: Dark Wish by Yumoyori Wilson Plus #GuestReview @PaRoyle

Dark Wish is another book that I had to skip reviewing while I was in my reading slump, I just didn’t get to it in time for the blog tour. I’ve now read it and have my review below and as a bonus, I have a review from the lovely Siobhan who has been reviewing a few books to add some variety to things here. I thought it would be interesting to post both reviews together!

Description

What do you get when you add free and dumb?
FREEDOM

My name is Makoto Heart and I’ve always wished for a chance at freedom. Every day, I prayed before the Starlight gods, asking for their divine assistance in accomplishing such a difficult task.

Being an experiment for as long as I can remember, my hopes of obtaining freedom have diminished, drastically. The disappointment haunted me, as myself and my spirits struggled to survive. I had no hope left, believing my final plea fell upon deaf ears, yet again.

But what happens when my prayers are finally answered? I’m thrust into fulfilling a destiny, with the help of six star knights. Suddenly, I am no longer experiment 555, but the stolen princess of Heila.

Freedom, how you have teased my troubled soul. May the Starlight gods guide me and my knights, on this path towards the unknown.

~In Stars We Trust~

Dark Wish is an extraordinary new paranormal reverse harem series.
Recommended for 18+ audience, containing mature sexual content and strong language.

Review 1 – Claire

I had high hopes for Dark Wish, it was getting rave feedback in the reverse harem groups I’m in on Facebook, the few reviews I had read were glowing and everything I had read about it shouted: “this is for you Claire”. Unfortunately when I actually started reading it quickly became clear that I was not getting out of it what I was expecting and it became a book that I was really not enjoying.

Makoto Heart is in captivity from a young age, and this alone should warm you to her. But I didn’t, not from the very first page when it was clear what was happening did I feel any kind of warmth towards this character, she is naive, immature and quite honestly a real whiny bitch. She isn’t rescued until she is in her twenties by the men that will be her harem and her personality does not improve post-escape. It escapes me what they see in her though. I truly felt nothing for this girl despite all of her troubles. Some of my biggest issues were:

  1.  This is a group of people in their mid-twenties yet they are going to a school which is set up as though they are in their teens. It just didn’t work for me. It felt all wrong like it was an adult book trying to be YA.
  2. Makoto is always asleep, I am not kidding at least once every single chapter she is sleeping, I mean how the hell am I supposed to bond with the MC when all she does is sleep?
  3. There is virtually no dialogue between Makoto and her “Knights”, yet quite early on she talks in her dialogue about how she is falling for them, this just didn’t work for me. I couldn’t feel that when I didn’t know these guys properly.
  4. There is a great concept in this book that shifters, which is what Makoto and her Knights are, hold different spirits in their body, like angels, demons etc. I loved this concept, but it comes across clunky and awkward. I was confused quite often, and the multiple dialogues switching from internal to external and back again was just far too confusing. I get the author was trying to be funny but it fell short.
  5. This is a book set in a huge world, but the world building isn’t thorough enough for the multiple planets and different world ideologies to not be confusing. There was a glossary at the beginning but the author really needs to work on world building within the text to make this more powerful and easier for the reader.

Then we get to the writing. It just didn’t flow for me, it felt stunted and awkward. There wasn’t that natural flow that you need with a novel to really fell embraced by the words. There are a lot of typos and issues with the incorrect form of words being used and in some cases the completely wrong word being used such as interacted instead of interaction. It didn’t feel as though an editor had got anywhere near it which I always feel is a real shame because it always lets a book down terribly not to be properly edited.

Overall, I got to the end but will definitely not continue the series, it was just too much hard work for me.

I had an eARC of this book to review courtesy of the author and Xpresso Book Tours.

Review 2 – Siobhan

This is a hard book for me, I was confused with all the different planets, and such creatures, or gods. The beginning of the story started off as an escape plan, but I didn’t understand until later why they were trying to escape, the main female character was funny and kind of childish in my opinion, although she’s been sheltered and abused, her different personalities where hard to keep up with.

The Male leads were interesting all very different and intriguing, and sweet but in the story I feel that there wasn’t enough background information to each character, and I tried very hard to get into the story but found it hard, but please don’t be put off by my review although this isn’t my cup of tea I will recommend it to someone whom enjoys these types of books.

#GuestReview: The Vixen’s Lead by Tate James @TateJamesAuthor @PaRoyle #Review

Time for our second review from my new guest reviewer Siobhan. If you missed her first review head back to yesterday to see her review of Groupie by C.M. Stunich. Today we have The Vixen’s Lead, this is another one that I have reviewed already so you can compare notes by catching up with my reviews here.

Description

I want vengeance so badly that I can almost taste it. It’s all I’ve ever wanted. So, I did what any privileged, adopted boarding school girl would do. I slapped on a secret identity and became an internationally renowned thief, known as The Fox. Nobody knows me. Nobody can catch me.

Or so I thought…

It turns out; I have what they want. Special abilities. And trust me, these abilities are coveted–and dangerous. Now, I don’t know who to trust or where to go. Peril lurks on every corner as I try to uncover my past and origin. Teaming up with unlikely allies may be my only chance at survival or my biggest mistake. Only time will tell.

I’m Kit Davenport and this is only the beginning.

Review

This book is about Kit, an 18-year-old school girl thief, it’s a bit cheesy but good. It’s got action, laughter fun, and some intense sexual moments. The girl suffers from a dark twisted past of pain and torture and my heart went out to her.

She then meets the omega gentlemen all hot in their own right, like some of them are seriously sexy, they are intense dominant and sweet all with a dark past, they come together to try and find out who is hunting Kit.

If you’re looking for a comedy/reverse harem with a cliffhanger then this is the book for you I’m gonna jump on in the books in the series.

#GuestReview: Groupie by C.M. Stunich @CMStunich @PaRoyle #Review

Hey Guys, I made a new friend recently and as we’ve talked we have a lot in common when it comes to books. She’s only written reviews for Goodreads, but when I read one she posted recently her enthusiasm for the book, her passion for the story shone through and I asked if she would like to review some books for the blog. I always think getting different POV’s even on books I may have reviewed ads a different element to the blog. Luckily, the very lovely Siobhan said yes!

We are kicking off her reviews with Groupie by C.M. Stunich, you can catch my review here if you want to see what I thought, and Siobhan’s review is below.

Description

“Can one of these five rockstars fill the hole in my heart? Or will I stay broken forever?”

Young, dumb, and broke.

That’s what started everything. With five dollars in her pocket, and everything she owns stuffed in the back of her car, Lilith Goode’s life is over. Done. Destroyed.

Ten words. One text. That’s what it took to change the whole world.

A crumpled concert ticket. A chance encounter. That’s what it takes to start all over again.

Five rockstars. One girl. Six dark hearts, six withered souls.
But can one broken person really put another back together again?

Review

So C.M is a new author to me, I’d never heard of her before a friend recommended her to me, but now I’m buying all her books. Groupie is an emotionally intense, hot book, the Male leads are all broken, hiding secrets and running from dark pasts, which gives them all completely different personalities but they all have two things in common, the female lead and their band. The female lead Lil, made me cry and had me laughing so hard sometimes. She’s a shattered soul who’s trying to stay strong in a world where she doesn’t know if she belongs.

Can 6 damaged broken souls find happiness or love, or will they succumb to their broken pasts?

If you’re looking for an emotionally charged sexy as hell read with 5 hot as sin men and a strong-willed vixen then this is for you, I’m highly recommending this book.
