Week in Review – 30 July 2017

I’ve done a lot of writing this week, it’s been really productive and I’m very pleased as I was really struggling, but I started a new project and I’ve been really inspired with it so Yay!

Today I’m volunteering at a charity football match all day, with ex-players from my favourite club so I’m not going to be star struck or ogling or acting like a child at all..nope, not me!

I also hit a huge weight loss target this week, I’ve now managed to lose 34kgs/6st since I started this journey in November 2015! It’s been a long journey and so hard at times! I’ve also found out this week I’ve been shortlisted to be an Ambassador for This Girl Can in Bristol, which is really cool.

Right, here is my bookish update for this week…I’m gonna toddle off and find me some football players!

#Review: Ranger Heat Series by Caitlyn Lynch @caitlynlynch6

Description

First Submission
Angry at her cheating boyfriend, Selina revisits an old haunt looking for distraction. She might have found a little more than she bargained for in the form of Brody, but the attraction between them is too sizzling hot to be denied!

Second Surrender
Sequel to First Submission, this is an exciting erotic adventure as Selina decides to go looking for the Brody, the Dom of her dreams! But will Brody be happy to see her, or was she just a one-night-stand he’s already forgotten?

Third Thrills
Third in the Ranger Heat trilogy. Brody has to make the call to accept Selina as his permanent sub, or risk losing her to another Dom – forever.

Review

I read these three short stories in one sitting, more as novella and as such have decided to review them in that way aswell.

Selina is in a very unsatisfying relationship with a guy who is quite frankly a bit of a dick. After finding out he’s been cheating on her while she’s been home keeping things ticking over for her, she walks out glams herself up and heads for a club to see some old friends and look for some fun. While she’s in there Brody catches her eye, obviously military there’s something strong and demanding about him that pulls her towards him.

They only have one night together, where she discovers just a small bit about being submissive and having a dom. The way that Lynch has written this is so real, unlike how it can often be portrayed, although enjoyable to read it’s often not real and lacks the intensity especially of the first time, this nailed it.

Despite being a submissive Selina is still a strong woman and Lynch has found a wonderful balance between her role as a woman and her role as a sexual submissive which I love. So many authors write sexual submissive’s as all round submissive’s which is just not the case. She has also written Brody as this power dom in the bedroom but then he is a sensitive and caring man, very thoughtful and not at all the asshole that dom’s are often portrayed as. I really love that she has done this taking the time to turn the stereotypes on their head.

As the stories progress and these two find themselves together and develop the relationship into a deeper bond later having to decide whether they stay together long term or go their separate ways there is an ever growing intensity which never leaves them. The BDSM factors are so raw and real that reading it is voyeuristic almost intrusive.

This is a fantastic mini series. I do wish it was a full size novel because I just felt like everything ended far too soon.

Week in Review – 23 July 2017

It seems you all really liked my new feature Marketing Monday, my stats which I don’t often look at but I couldn’t miss them for this, went through the roof for this post! I’m so pleased as I really agonised about creating this feature. I wasn’t sure if I would come across as a bit pompous! The feedback in the comments and the fact the stats were, well, awesome shows me I’m on the right track. I’ll start planning next month’s post for you and hopefully you’ll like it just as much!

You’ll be pleased to know that I made it to both fitness classes this week! hooray! I can’t walk now though I think I’ve pulled a few muscles but no pain no gain right?! haha!

I should also let you know that you picked The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson as my TBR Topple read this month! I’m really looking forward to diving in so look out for the review early next month!

Aaaand, Here is my bookish update for this week…

#Review: Ellie’s Encounter by Caitlyn Lynch @caitlynlynch6

Description

Jet-lagged after a long flight, the last thing Ellie needs is to get trapped in the elevator on the way to her hotel room. At least she’s not alone in her predicament; a sexy cowboy named Jacob is trapped in there with her. When her claustrophobia starts to get the best of her, he’s only too happy to lend a hand to help distract her. Both of them, actually. And his mouth. And the rest of his body…

Ellie’s Encounter is the first in the Elevator Encounters series. There’s a vintage elevator in a beautiful Art Deco hotel in New York, and the repairman swears it has a mind of its own. It only ever seems to break down when there’s a couple inside, you see…

Review

This is a short story so I’m not going to go overboard on the review, it will be more of a mini-review if you like. Ellie’s Encounter is part of Lynch’s Elevator Encounter’s series and is a quick burst of what she has on offer. This was my first foray into Lynch’s writing and quite unusual as I rarely stray into short story territory as if I’m honest I don’t really find them satisfying.

Ellie has travelled to the States from jolly old England for a romance authors convention. When she gets on the elevator, or lift for my fellow Brits, she is joined by a rather sexy cowboy. Yay to being in America folks (having ridden an elevator in America with a sexy cowboy I can totally relate to her predicament…unfortunately mine didn’t break down like hers did!) So her elevator breaks down and of course they have to get to know each other!

It takes about 30 minutes of reading for a wonderfully erotic story to unfold, centred around the elevator. Now while I thoroughly enjoyed I still say even a novella is far more enjoyable as there is just a bit more substance and depth to those stories. A short story is just over far to quickly and I like to know more about the characters and what happens to them.

Week in Review – 16 July 2017

Another week has gone by, how is this year flying by so quickly? Wow!

So this week I got roped into joining a couple of fitness classes with my good friend Jen! She is super fit already being an archaeologist who spends all her time working outside digging in trenches! Despite my massive weight-loss and regular exercise routine I am not fit, not even close, and after going to the first one which was like a military exercise I bowed out of the second on Thursday as I literally couldn’t lift my arms!

I mentioned a while back I’m writing a book about my experiences with mental health, I’ve had a really good author friend beta read the first six chapters of the book to help me gauge how it is coming together and had fantastic feedback which has really given me a boost for continuing to write! Thank you my lovely friend for taking on that challenge with my completely unedited rambling!

I also got invited to interview for a role working in a mental health support role I really wanted. I honestly thought they would laugh at my application so whatever happens just getting an interview is awesome.

I also had an unusual day out this week. I was invited to spend a day at the offices of OVO along with a few other customers. If you aren’t familiar with OVO, they are one of the smaller energy suppliers, so being invited to the offices of an energy supplier isn’t exactly your run of the mill day. I switched to them away from EDF four years ago, and I chose them not just for their 100% green tariff’s but because they had really good social responsibility policies. What going to their offices has shown me is that they actually live and breathe their policy. In my entire adult life I’ve never been in an office where people are so laid back, and happy, even their call centre staff were relaxed and visibly enjoying their jobs. Which actually explains why when I phone them I actually get answers and someone being nice on the phone! I’ve always been a huge advocate of theirs but now I’ve seen them up close I’m an even bigger fan.

Finally, I launched a new feature over on the mental health blog yesterday if you are interested, it’s called Boxed Up and it’s highlighting Subscription Boxes. The first one I have is Literary Vacation Club (hence highlighting it here) which is centred around reading!

Week in Review – 9 July 2017

Well, it was great taking a week off, my holiday was a bit of a wash out, literally as the tent flooded and we had to come home but these things happen and I’m just glad that we got some time out and managed to get some day trips in.

I’ve combined this update to show what I’ve been reading over the two weeks since my last update so there’s quite a lot here, or not considering it’s been two weeks!

Book of the Month

June was a great reading month for me and it has been really difficult to choose a book of the month, which is why I chose three! I know, I know and I’m sorry but these were three epic books and picking between them was torture so I just didn’t!

Skullsworn was the first novel I have read by Brian Staveley but I will definitely be going back and reading his previous work, it deeply affected me and aside from being a brutal and bloody epic fantasy it was also a heartbreaking read. The Lost Sentinel was the second novel by indie author Suzanne Rogerson, and after her first novel I had high hopes which she completely knocked out of the ballpark. This exceeded every expectation I had and was a superb start to a new series with characters that you become completely entwined with! Godblind is one of the most brutal books I’ve ever read, there are scenes in this book you will never forget. Anna Stephens writing is sublime and haunting and you just can’t stop reading it. There are some awesome characters but that ending, my God, that ending!
