#Review: Father Figure by James J. Cudney @jamescudney4

Disclosure: In the interest of fairness it’s only right that I let you all know that I was a beta reader for Father Figure and read it twice before publication. I have read the final version one final time post-publication to be able to write this review.

Description

Between the fast-paced New York City, a rural Mississippi town, and a charming Pennsylvania college campus filled with secrets, two young girls learn the consequences of growing up too quickly. Struggling to survive in a claustrophobic, unforgiving world, they embark on a journey to overcome all the pain, disappointment, and horror of their experiences.

Amalia Graeme, abused by her mother for most of her life, longs to escape her desolate hometown, connect with others, and fall in love. Contemplating an impending loss of innocence and conflicting feelings between her boyfriend and the dangerous attraction she’s developed for an older man, Amalia suffers devastating, life-altering tragedies. No matter where she turns, someone or something always steals her hope of finding happiness, protection, and love.

Brianna Porter, a sassy yet angst-ridden teenager raised in New York City, yearns to determine her life’s true purpose, conquer her fear of abandonment, and interpret an intimidating desire for her best friend, Shanelle. All the confusion stems from desperately needing to find the father whom her mother refuses to reveal, but an unexpected discovery of a journal leads Brianna to a shocking revelation about her missing parent. Unfortunately, by casting the net to find him, she’s unleashed a tragic history that was meant to stay buried and might now completely change everyone’s futures.

Through alternating chapters set two decades apart, each girl’s plight unfolds revealing the parallels between their lives and the subsequent collision that is bound to happen. In an emotional story filled with mystery, romance, and suspense, fate intervenes forcing someone to make a dreadful decision that will leave permanent scars.

Review

The name James J. Cudney comes with an assurance of quality, emotional turmoil, romance and suspense all things we learned from his debut novel Watching Glass Shatter. Delving between the pages of his second novel Father Figure all of this things are thrown your way in droves leaving you yet again deeply heartbroken, in love, shocked, and fighting for your favourite characters.

Meet Amalia. The quiet small town girl living a life of parental abuse. Amalia is desperate to escape her hometown, go to college and start her life free from the life which has held her back so far. There was so much of Amalia’s life I felt an affinity to, I cried with her, I cried for her. Some of the scenes are horrific, while others are so inspiring that you want to lift them from the page and see them unfold in front of your eyes. From her first kiss to her first love Amalia stole my heart from the first page and there wasn’t a moment in this book where my support for her wavered. In the light of difficult decisions and some ghastly events, she keeps her dignity and somehow finds a way through.

Meet Brianna. Ansty, confident and filled with questions. Brianna is a girl filled with confusion, but a fire to get the answers. She will happily jump into things like a bull in a china shop and has no qualms about asking awkward questions. Growing up in New York City with a single Mom she knows nothing about her Father and is on a mission to find out before she goes to college. Also struggling with her sexuality she has some big decisions looming on her horizon and a Mom who is staying tight-lipped about everything. Brianna honestly reminds me of myself at that age. She doesn’t really consider people’s feelings before she does things, but the consequences do affect her and make her think twice. She’s hurting and she’s deflecting that hurt to the people she loves most in the world. She makes some epically silly decisions but hey…I’m fairly sure I’m not the only one who can relate to that when they were eighteen?! I am? Seriously?

The two girls stories are told in an alternating fashion…sneaky…very sneaky! Eventually converging so the two stories come together in devastating fashion. I can’t give this one genre. I have thought about this over and over it is romance, suspense, mystery and family drama. This book suits so many readers that I just say delve in and treat yourself.

Father Figure is one of the best books I’ve ever had the pleasure to read. I don’t say that lightly it has torn through so many of my emotions, just writing this review I ended up crying again because everything came to my mind. James J. Cudney is one of the best new writers out there and will be a household name of that I have no doubt.

#ReleaseBlitz: Coma by Zak Hardacre @ZakHardacre #Excerpt #Trailer

Zak Hardacre is a new author to me and seriously, why did you people not tell me about him sooner?! I have added some back catalogue books to that toppling TBR of mine as well as this new release Coma…my fellow erotic romance fans you HAVE to check this out, the excerpts below are hotter than they have any right to be. This is a MMMF novel with some hardcore BDSM, and from the small amount I’ve read this man knows what he is talking about…I do hate it when authors make this shit up! OK….enjoy people!

Description

“The worst memory was when I was still in a coma and I could feel people hold my hand.  I could feel the nurses bathing me, but I couldn’t move or open my eyes.  I just couldn’t do anything and it was terrifying!”

Xavier Prince wakes in a hospital bed on a Caribbean island. He has no idea how he got there, or in fact who the hell he is. When his Doctor informs him that he is quite the celebrity, he is determined to uncover his past.

Having only brief recollections, his search is aided by the appearance of a Nordic beauty called Freya. Along with her brother, Lars, they ignite something in his subconscious and he begins his path of self-discovery.

A club, bizarre sexual activities and demonstrations. A world far removed from his rather quiet and sedentary childhood. The death of his father, and the benefit of a healthy inheritance, launch him into the world of business.

The alien world of BDSM was a business venture and was something he never saw coming. He takes the opportunity with both hands. With the guidance of his mentor, Anton, he quickly rises to become one of the most popular Doms on the UK scene.

Clearing his mind of all pre-conceptions, he embraces this new lifestyle. Yet love, jealousy and betrayal stalk his clouded past. Perhaps they are the reason for his current situation? Will peeling away the layers of time uncover who on earth is Xavier Prince?Coma - Blitz Banner

Excerpt

I approach her until the stiffness of my cock makes contact with her buttocks. I hold myself there a moment, delighting in the sensation that ripples through my groin. Freya forces herself back against me, eager to feel my swollen meat against her clit. I lean over her bent body and ensure the blindfold is still tight around her head. Her hands still take her weight against the wall. With her back horizontal and arse thrust out, she is in the perfect position for me to administer the flogging.

“Now precious…you need to stay real still. Did the leather not feel good on your body? Did you not feel the fire? You need this, my pet, the hot burning of the leather on your skin. I will teach you to love the taste of this fire.” I move my lips so that they are only inches away from her ear and whisper the words.

I begin to breathe deeply in anticipation for what is to come. I draw the handle against her clit and pull it back, so that it is coated with her juices. Then I step back and makes sure my grip is firm. I give her a playful tap against her right arse cheek. It causes her to jump as the leather tails are fanned across the roundness of her buttock, jarring her mind back slightly, she stills, listening. A soft whisper as I slap the flogger lightly across her arse again. Her arse quivers under its touch, and I feel myself stiffen at the sight.

I draw the flogger away and taking a half a step further away, measure the distance. The distance is good. It swishes through the air, splaying the leather strips across her ass slightly harder, causing her to gasp. I hear a sharp intake of breath from behind me, and turn to see Cindy licking her lips. Anton smiles and nods. It is the first time that I had been alerted to the fact that they were still standing there. I return my attention to Freya.

Her body has stiffened getting accustomed to the stinging needles of pain, as the heat mingles with her own rolling and viciously caged fire. I reach forward and rub her clit, then strike her once more with the flogger. The falls wrap around her hips and inner thighs. They produce fresh welts on her milky white skin.

“Trust me, precious, let go of your fear and just experience this.” As I speak, I move the handle slowly between her thighs and run it along her hot, wet lips, letting the rawhide rub across her clit.

“Yes, Sir.” Her response is immediate and wanton.

The falls strike her fully across both cheeks. She gasps again, calling out loudly. As the stripes begin to sting, she drops her head against the mirror. The pain rages a war with the pleasure and passion she must be feeling. I watch and sense her body react to each stroke now. Each one more forceful than the last. Her mind must be searching, needing to understand how she can feel such excitement as the pain increases.

“Are you ready to cum?” I cease the flogging and insert my hand over her mound, teasing her clit with my thumb.

“Yes, I’m ready, Sir”. Her reply is a panted whisper.

Pumping my fingers slowly, deep inside her pussy keeping her right on the edge, her moans are building softly and urgently. I strike her ass twice in quick succession and she convulses. Her whole body is shaking as I bring her over the edge. Arousal begins to form together, edging along with the pain.

“You need to cum right now. So cum for me!” Whimpering and sobbing she nods and moans. Begging for Him to let her cum, let the orgasm he has been holding on edge all night, break free.

“Yes, Sir! Make me cum!”

“Then cum for me, my pet.” I growl the words, while stroking her g-spot and clit together.

#Review: Reclaim by Marley Valentine @MValentine__

Description

Unlike most eighteen year olds, I had the weight of the world on my young shoulders. Desperate to do right by my family, my questionable choices led me to the pits of hell.

Steel bars, three meals a day and no contact with the outside world; regret consumed my every thought. Desperate to pay my penance, forgiveness and a happily ever after wasn’t the plan.

But there she was.

Warm, passionate and unexpected, Emerson Lane was the light at the end of the tunnel. She was all a man like me could want and everything I didn’t deserve.

Redemption wasn’t something I thought I would ever find. Until she found me.

Review

Jagger made a terrible mistake when he was 18, a mistake that saw him put behind bars for fifteen years. A sentence he believes he deserves more than anybody else. Certainly, nobody beats him up more than Jagger beats himself up. After twelve years in prison, he is granted parole and the solicitor who brings him the news is like a breath of fresh air for him. Emerson wakes something up in Jagger, he knows he doesn’t deserve a woman like her but for some reason she sees him. Not the prisoner, or the boy who made the terrible mistake, but the man he is, she sees right into his soul.

This is my first Marley Valentine book and I am so glad it was recommended to me by one of the beta readers. While there were moments where I would have liked to have seen more of their developing relationship this is a gripping story of two people from two different worlds who on paper should never have fit together yet the moment they meet the sparks are undeniable. In fact, their meeting was my favourite scene in the book and I highly recommend reading just for that scene alone.

I particularly love that it is set in Australia, it’s nice to get away from the books set in the US, and I could clearly hear their accents and see the locations. I thoroughly enjoyed this whole story. I was thrilled when I got to the end and found out another book is coming with Jagger’s twin brother Hendrix, who I was totally crushing on throughout the Reclaim. I can’t wait to get my teeth into that one.

#Review: Raising Amalia by Regine Abel @regineabel

Have you read my previous books in this series? If not, check the links below:

Description

Sevina has never known life outside a slave ship… until today. At twenty-two, she’s sent to Eryon Valis, a Korlethean slave with whom she must mate as part of their master’s psi breeding program. When a prophecy sets a target on her, Eryon secretly shields her and their unborn daughter from those who would harm them.

Unbeknownst to Sevina, her mother Maheva faces her own emotional turmoil while playing a dangerous game to protect her children from the crew and the twisted Guldan beliefs of their Master Gruuk.

As one tragedy compounds another, will Fate forsake them or set the path to a better future?

Review

Raising Amalia takes us back to the events prior to Escaping Fate, it tells us how Amalia’s Great Mother Maheva came to be on the slave ship, a pet to their Master Gruuk, and how her and her daughters were his favourites. This story tells us how Amalia came to be and how her escape as we see it in the first book came about.

What I loved about this book was that it gives us small details about Amalia’s family, and the events that lead to her escape that we would never have known otherwise, that she doesn’t know, that are tremendously moving and help us to see some of the players in a slightly different light.

I was deeply moved by several of the passages in this book as we moved between Maheva’s dialogue to Sevina (Amalia’s mother) and even to Amalia’s Father who she never meets. Their lives as slaves are not easy and knowing that they do the best they can in the face of such adversity is emotionally draining.

I went into this book feeling a little negative I will be honest, I thought do I really need to read this, I just want more of the story I’m already invested in, but actually this added a whole load of extra value to that story while taking me on quite the emotional rollercoaster so I’m super glad I dug in.

Thanks to Regine Abel for the eARC of this book so that I could read and honestly review the book.

Excerpt

As Amalia leaned in toward Carter expecting him to reach for it with his hand, a devilish gleam in his eyes appeared. “You’re not gonna try to pull me in, are you?” She suppressed a wary giggle deep in her gut. Or maybe it was excitement. She wasn’t sure.

“Did you want to come in the water with me?”

Amalia pulled her bottom lip inside her mouth, running her top teeth over it, contemplating how to respond. “I don’t have a swimsuit.” She lifted her hand in his direction, her fingers still nimbly holding a small piece of the sandwich. “Here, take it.”

Carter raised himself a few inches higher and brought his mouth to her impatiently waiting fingers. His full lips gently sealed the temporarily open gap between them. Amalia’s hand, uncertain what he was doing, twitched. Carter reached up with his right arm while his other held his body against the dock. He enveloped her hand with his, steadying her fingers near his lips as he slipped the morsel in his mouth. Swallowing the length of her index finger and thumb, he pulled back with delicate ease. When he reached the tip of her fingers, he paused and immersed himself in her eyes. “You taste delicious.” Carter blinked in slow motion for what could have been thirty seconds but had barely been two or three.

“You mean the sandwich does.” Amalia traced her finger against the soft patch of skin above his chin. His face was as smooth as her own flesh. A shiver meandered the curves of her dampening back.

“If you say so.” Carter pulled himself fully out of the water landing near the other side of the dock. Barely two feet separated them, but he was careful not to drip any water on her a second time.

As he laid across the wooden planks dropping a handful of chips in his mouth, Amalia’s eyes lingered on his torso noticing not a single spot of hair on his chest or stomach. But Carter didn’t have a stomach. He had a set of eight curved ridges that spanned the distance from his sternum to the top of his black trunks, a solid washboard of muscle. His dark swimsuit highlighted a sharp contrast to his golden skin leaving her increasingly curious about what lurked beneath the trunks. She’d noticed other guys without their shirts, but none resembled Carter. Her hand quivered at the thought of his body nestled against hers. Amalia closed her eyes, then forced herself to look away, certain she shouldn’t extend the reach of her fingers to his flesh.

“How’s the water?” She stared in the opposite direction fumbling with the button on her blouse. The heat had begun to break down her barriers. Amalia considered taking off her shoes and dipping her feet into the lake. There wasn’t any danger in showing…

About James J. Cudney

James Cudney - Author Image

James is my given name; most call me Jay. I grew up on Long Island and currently live in New York City, but I’ve traveled all across the US (and various parts of the world). After college, I spent 15 years working in technology and business operations in the sports, entertainment and media industries. Although I enjoyed my job, I left in 2016 to focus on my passion: telling stories and connecting people through words. My debut novel is ‘Watching Glass Shatter,’ a contemporary fiction family drama with elements of mystery, suspense, humor and romance. To see samples or receive news from my current and upcoming books, please subscribe with your email address at my website: https://jamesjcudney.com

What do I do outside of writing: I’m an avid genealogist (discovered 2K family members going back about 250 years) and cook (I find it so hard to follow a recipe). I love to read; between Goodreads and my blog at https://thisismytruthnow.com, I have over 500 book reviews which will give you a full flavor for my voice and style. On my blog, I started the 365 Daily Challenge, where I post a word each day that has some meaning to me, then converse with everyone about life. There is humor, tears, love, friendship, advice and bloopers. Lots of bloopers where I poke fun at myself all the time. Even my dog has a weekly segment called “Ryder’s Rants” where he complains about me. All these things make up who I am; none of them are very fancy or magnanimous, but they are real and show how I live every day.

A bit of humor: Everything doubles as something else when you live in NYC. For me, it’s the dining room, my favorite space in the apartment, where more than just my cooking is on display! As I look out the windows onto a 12th floor terrace, various parts of nature (trees, bushes, flowers, bugs & animals) inspire me to write. Ryder, my 10-year old shiba inu, usually lays on my feet, growling when I shift positions too many times or when I forget to share my food! Although he’s only 20 pounds, he’s quite strong and pushy. But how else can you pen the best story possible without these things by your side?

#Review: Blind Fate by Regine Abel @regineabel

This is book two in the Veredian Chronicles series…if you’ve missed previous reviews check out my links below:

Description

Born in a breeding compound, Valena has never known a day of freedom. As a child, her master burned her retinas to prevent her from mind-controlling those who meet her gaze. But she still controls people’s thoughts with a touch. Sold to the Xelix Prime Blood Houses, she is forced to use her ability to keep the other slaves compliant. When Fate places a powerful Counselor in her path, she plots and schemes to use him to escape, until her feelings for him complicate matters.

As her master’s plans take on a darker turn, lies, betrayal, and tragedy threaten any hope she ever held of a better future.

This book is standalone and the sequel to Escaping Fate.

Review

I’m well and truly bingeing this series and it’s fantastic! Blind Fate is the second book in the Veredian Chronicles series. Valena, like Amalia, is a psi but has had some of her power taken by being blinded. I love that we have a lead character with a disability it was just such a positive thing to read.

Valena has been responsible for looking after the young women who are used in the illegal blood houses to heal the Tainted Xelixian males. She hasn’t so much as dreamed of a life away from captivity until she meets Zhul. A Prime he has no need for the services at the blood houses, in fact, he is appalled by what goes on there.

Zhul and Valena are the perfect match, but Valena’s master has his own plans for this couple and they have quite the fight ahead of them if they have any hope of getting a happily ever after. In Escaping Fate we see Zhul as one of the more villainous characters yet seeing the full story through Zhul and Valena’s POV’s in this book we see why he acted the way he did and understand the full situation.

We further follow the story of Amalia, Lhor and Khel which works really well with Valena and Zhul’s story. A few of the chapters are from Lhor’s POV and are really enjoyable. Seeing the world coming together and progressing as we learn more about newer characters really adds a lot to the reading experience for me.

Blind Fate can be read as a standalone, but I think for the best reading experience you would want to read the books in order.

I want to send a huge thanks to Regine Abel for the eARC so that I could read and honestly review this book.

Description

Texas rancher Nathaniel Meier always puts his responsibilities first. With his father dead, his brothers away, and his mother off “finding herself,” it’s Nat who runs their sprawling ranch. But with cattle to sell and the bank breathing down his neck, he needs all the help he can get, even when that help comes from the last person he ever expected to see again—his childhood sweetheart January Rose.

Free-spirited January always dreamed of traveling the world. The moment she turned eighteen, she left Close Call, Texas behind and barely looked back. So now that she’s home, she intends to stay only long enough to earn some cash and get back on the road. But when she comes face to face with Nat Meier, she quickly realizes the boy she left behind is now all man.

Even for a nomad like January, wanderlust sometimes gets lonely, and Nat is the one person who’s called to her, even after a decade apart. But for a man ruled by responsibility and a woman whose suitcase is her home, the future is uncertain. And the closer they get, the more Nat worries he’s going to get burned…again.Tempting the Rancher - Tour Banner

Review

Nat has taken responsibility for the family ranch after his father’s death and while his Brother’s are off pursuing other life path’s. His one regret in life is January, the girl who left town with his heart ten years ago. And then she returns a whirlwind of freshness and colour, turning his world upside down.

Tempting the Rancher is a novella, and as such fits into a weekend nice and comfortably. I found some of this book a bit slow going, some of it a little over-described which in a novella is a shame as they are normally very quick moving. I would have liked to have felt more deeply embedded into the characters lives, instead, I felt a little detached from them until near the very end.

Nat and January are not happy people, they both come across as such sad characters the misery just clings to you through their dialogue. They feel sad about their life choices, themselves, even the things they are passionate about. It’s a smorgasbord of sad.

This is a good story, with some really likeable characters there were just a few flaws which slowed down my pace a little.

I’m very grateful to Leslie North and Xpresso Book Tours for the eARC so that I could read and review this book honestly.

Leslie North is the pen name for a critically-acclaimed author of women’s contemporary romance and fiction. The anonymity gives her the perfect opportunity to paint with her full artistic palette, especially in the romance and erotic fantasy genres.

The truth of the matter is she loves her fictional persona, Leslie North, more than her normal, day-to-day persona! Inspired after years of travel, her stories are set all over the world, from the tough streets of Russia to the beautiful beaches of the middle east.

Leslie fell in love with romance when she first picked up a scrappy, dog-eared romance book from her local library. She began writing soon after and the rest, as they say, was history.
