AWARD: Brotherhood of the World Award

I’m so grateful to Nel at Reactionary Tales for nominating me for this Award. Please go and visit Nel she has such an amazing blog and she’s a lovely person. The questions below are awesome, they were asked by the equally fabulous Noriko over at Diary of a Bookfiend and I’ll definitely be keeping these questions as there’s no way I’ll be able to beat them!

Briefly explain your blogging style (where your favourite blogging spot/tools – as in, on the couch using your smartphone or something)

I like to think of myself as obsessively erratic! I have a very definite house style, my posts follow a certain format and I always make sure they sit in that style. Some tour hosts send HTML files which would make life so much easier because I could just copy paste and schedule, but I’m far too anal for that so I always create every single post from scratch ensuring they all fit my own style.

That being said, my writing style is very erratic and conversational…but, I’m still quite a stickler for grammar and punctuation so I do my very best to make sure I’ve proofread everything I’m putting out a few times. Of course, things slip through and I catch mistakes all the time, I’m not perfect.

As for where I blog, I like to be comfortable when I write anything, so I sit with my feet up on the couch. I have quite a small laptop and I play music…LOUD. I actually concentrate better when I have music than if it’s quiet. I generally don’t snack and I will forget to eat lunch quite a lot of the time!

How do you manage your blogging time including blog reading time?

It depends on the rest of my schedule, days I’m volunteering, or have other work on throws out my schedule, but in general, my blogging time works like this:

I start the day by checking Twitter, then going through some of the recent posts in WordPress Reader.

Then I will spend the morning writing reviews and scheduling posts, I normally have time to get 2-4 posts scheduled depending on the length of the reviews I’m writing. After lunch, I’m writing/editing my book, then reading. When I go to bed I spend thirty minutes-ish reading blogs again before I switch back to reading.

I try not to spend too much time on social media and reading blogs. While I love everybody’s blogs it’s a big black hole as we all know and one I don’t want to get lost in every day. Also, social media is part of my profession so I don’t want to spend all of my social time on there as well. It’s too much!

Who is your most read author?

Right now C.M. Stunich, aside from the fact she releases at least one book per month, I’m also reading her back catalogue to catch up so I’m reading at least 2/3 of her books each month at the moment. I may be a little obsessed.

How did you come up with your blog name?

I love this question! Despite years of Marketing I’m rubbish with branding, it is not my forte, so when I needed to come up with a name to brand the blog I was really stuck. Eventually, I realised that I could “cash-in” on where I come from.

Many of you won’t know that the part of England I come from has its own dialect, we even have our own Dictionary! Our slang for the City name Bristol is Brizzle. So BrizzleLass was born and when I set up this blog I just added the Books!

What keeps you blogging?

I love blogging, I love meeting people, making friends. Book Blogging has been the most rewarding form of blogging I’ve done, but I’ve always loved blogging, I first started in 2002 so I can’t imagine not sharing a piece of myself in this way.

Thanks for the awesome questions, I’m going to keep them the same and nominate a small list. Same rules apply as always, no pressure, and if you aren’t nominated but fancy taking part have at it.

AWARD: The Sunshine Blogger Award … Take 4

The very lovely Liz at Stellar Kitten Book Reviews nominated me for this one. It’s my fourth time around the block with this one, they just keep on coming, I love these though so happy to have fun with them. Liz is a newer blog friend of mine I’ve only been visiting for a few months but love her blog already and hope you all pop over and say Hi.

What is the Sunshine Blogger Award?

The Sunshine Blogger Award is given to those who are creative, positive and inspiring, while spreading sunshine to the blogging community.

How Does It Work

  • Thank the person(s) who nominated you in a blog post and link back to their blog
  • Answer the 11 questions sent by the person who nominated you
  • Nominate 11 new blogs to receive the award and write them 11 new questions
  • List the rules and display the Sunshine Blogger Award logo on your post and/or on your blog

Liz’s Questions

Did you have an imaginary friend as a child?

No, I’m the eldest of five so my brain was kept busy enough with the people who were actually there.

What book really got you into reading?

I’ve always read, I don’t remember ever not reading, but the first book I remember vividly is The Worst Witch by Jill Murphy which I read when I was 5/6 and the whole set of these books were firm favourites until I was about 10. I’ve just bought the set for my Niece as she turned 6 herself last month and is a big bookworm, I’m hoping they have the same effect on her as they did me.

Because schools always have assigned readings: What was your favorite assigned reading?

Easy, The Catcher in the Rye. That book had such a significant impact on me as a teenager, I related to Holden in a way I had never related to a character before and it really hit me hard. I had several one-to-one classes with my English teacher to help me deal with how it had affected me.

What book/series would you want to see turned into a movie/TV show?

Oh, I just finished a book that’s part of a series I think would be amazing as a TV Series actually. Rachel Caine’s Weather Warden series. It’s so visual and Jo the main character is so ballsy and I just love it. I had a huge gap of almost 10 years between books 4 and 5 and picked it straight back up again so easily. I thought several times while reading book 5 that it would make a great show.

What are some books you don’t talk about often that you really love?

Wow, probably a lot of the gothic horrors I’ve read, I don’t really rave about them much but I do absolutely love them. The Monk is one of my all time favourites and I think EVERYONE should read it. The Picture of Dorian Grey is outstanding (don’t watch the movie it doesn’t do it justice), Frankenstein and Dracula barely need a mention they are so famous already, Oh The Turn of the Screw is so good, anything by Poe and Anne Rice, and Melmoth the Wanderer.

If you could change the ending to any book, what book would it be, and what would happen in your new ending?

I would probably change the ending of those bloody Twilight books! I’d have her ditch Edward and go with Jacob. That would cut it down to just one book so we wouldn’t have had to suffer three additional books of awful writing.

Pick two characters, from different books. Now, throw them into a fairytale. How crazy would it get?

Oh wow! Interesting. OK I’m going with my two favourite characters right now so Wydrin from Jen Williams Copper Cat Trilogy, and Ben Garston from James Bennett’s Ben Garston novels. I’ll put them in Hansel & Gretal as it’s a boy and girl. Given they are both seriously kick ass, Ben is also a dragon, and Wydrin has serious skills with a sword I think that witch won’t last more than about 10 minutes. I also think that the way these two drink that they’ll both be off their faces drunk in another 10 minutes.

Coffee, tea, or smoothies?

In winter tea – I go with Peppermint or I have a Red Fruits One. I don’t drink caffeine so it’s always something herbal
In summer smoothie all the way.

About how many unread books do you own?

I have just consulted my ever-growing list and it tells me I’m up to 255. Seriously, no matter how quickly I read that list grows, it never shrinks.

What has been your favorite 2017 release so far?

That is too difficult! There have been several…(links to my reviews)

Raising Fire by James Bennett
Blackwing by Ed McDonald
The Ninth Rain by Jen Williams
The Last Days of Magic by Mark Tompkins
Red Sister by Mark Lawrence
Godblind by Anna Stephens
The Lost Sentinel by Suzanne Rogerson
Skullsworn by Brian Staveley

What 2018 book are you looking forward to the most so far?

I think you’ll see a pattern here! haha

Ben Garston #3 by James Bennett
Ravens Mark #2 by Ed McDonald
The Bitter Twins by Jen Williams
Grey Sister by Mark Lawrence
The Godblind Trilogy #2 by Anna Stephens
Silent Sea Chronicles #2 by Suzanne Rogerson

AWARD: The Sunshine Blogger Award … Take 3

The very lovely Mischenko at Read Rant Rock & Roll nominated me for this one. It’s my third time around the block with this one, I have a feeling these are just going to keep on coming! Go say Hi to Mischenko she has a fab blog, it’s one of my absolute favourites!

Mischenko’s Questions

What was the date of your very first blog post?

Oh yikes, my very first blog post was back in 2002, and I don’t have the blog archives any more so I don’t know, from memory I think it was around April/May but that’s a guess.

For this blog my first post was April 12 2015 it’s for a book a really close friend of mine wrote, it’s actually not bad considering I had no idea what I was doing, the book is The Art of Postcard Writing, and although it’s written by a good friend of mine it’s a great little book on ideas for writing postcards, something I do loads of, and I’m always happy to add people to my crazy postcard writing rotation as well. *wink*

Have you ever thought about writing a book?

Funny you should ask! I’ve just started working on the second draft of my first novel. It’s a romance, but I’m putting a mental health element in and trying to make sure it shows mental illness as it really is not how people perceive it. I’ve been very lucky to have two people who have been reading my work at different points and offering advice along the way so I’m not just blindly writing rubbish. One has multiple romance books published the other is about to be published so I feel very lucky to not only be supported and encouraged by such successful people but have them as friends.

Is there a quote or saying that you simply don’t like?

If I’m honest, most of them! I really hate motivational quotes and things like that, they tend to rub me up the wrong way almost every time. I’m a firm believer in just believing in yourself and getting on with things. I don’t know why people need to rely on a bunch of meaningless words (sorry…I’m ranting).

I’m trying to think of one that’s really annoyed me recently…Oh I know, someone sent this to me on Facebook recently. took everything I had not to go into major rant mode and just ignore it. I’ve been sent this a few times over the years and it’s infuriating.

Name a book that you would NEVER recommend.

The Dragon's Legacy - Deborah A. Wolf

Oooh that’s difficult, because I actually think all books are suited to someone. Even some that I’ve thought were totally ridiculous someone else will think is a 5* read.

I would probably say The Dragon’s Legacy though, this was a DNF for me, and whilst most fantasy bloggers I know loved it, so I know I was in the minority and I think most fantasy fans would love it. I had no clue what was going on and didn’t understand the plot at all. So in recommending I wouldn’t have a clue how to explain this book to somebody at all so probably just wouldn’t.

What are the best and worst books you’ve ever bought?

Best, now that’s hard and I guess like most people it can change with the wind. I think at the moment I’m sitting with Jen Williams Copper Cat trilogy, I have the UK and US versions of the books because I just loved the US covers I had to buy them as well! I only have three shelves for physical books and one is taken up almost entirely by her books!

Worst, easily the Twilight saga. What was I thinking getting into those?! Terrible writing, Terrible story, the worst thing is I was stuck in a cottage in Norwich in November with nothing else to do when I had them and they were my best entertainment option so I read them. I think had my options been different I would have given up a few chapters into the first one and saved myself a lot of mental torture!

Name a book that you wish had a sequel.

Blood Bank - Zoe MarkhamBlood Bank by Zoë Markham, this is a short book which in true Markham style has an open ending. But it’s got such evocative characters that you just want more and the best thing is you don’t particularly like any of them which is such clever writing. I would love for her to write a sequel and tell us what happens next with these brilliant characters she’s created. I feel like there’s so much more that could happen.

What’s the most interesting thing you’ve read or seen this week?

I read this earlier this morning and it is definitely something I’m really interested in and something that makes me happy to see although we still have such a long way to go with this.

http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/suicide-statistics_uk_59b0f5a8e4b0354e440f53fe?utm_hp_ref=uk&utm_hp_ref=uk

What are some favorite childhood books?

When I was really young, I was obsessed with a book called Miss Penelope Strawberry, it was part of a set called The Garden Gang which has now been discontinued. My Mum knew the whole book by heart because even at 2yrs I wouldn’t let her read anything else to me.

As an older child my love of the spooky and fantasy started to show through. I was obsessed with The Worst Witch for a while, R.L. Stine and Christopher Pike’s books, The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe set, Roald Dahl, and believe it or not but Lord of the Rings. I was 12 when I was gifted those books and they opened my eyes to whole new possibilities, I jumped from those to Shannara by Terry Brooks. The Librarian at our library didn’t quite know what to do with me as I stopped using the childrens section and became glued to the fantasy section.

Do you read newspapers and magazines?

Physical newspapers no. I haven’t for about 15 years. I read a couple of websites for news online, but I’m fussy where I get my news from. Too many news outlets are biased, their journalists write badly and the news they are putting out is just bad in so many other ways. The BBC is one of the worst in my opinion, I literally won’t have anything at all to do with anything the BBC puts out if I can help it.

Magazines, I have a subscription to one magazine called Metal Hammer. I’ve had a subscription to this magazine since I was, I want to say 13, that seems right, it’s around the time the magazine first started. I get a free CD with the magazine every month as well which is great. Small factoid, but back when I was doing my reviewing thing for music, I actually did a few paid guest spots in the magazine reviewing CDs. Absolute highlight of my writing career.

What influenced your love for reading?

Reading comes naturally to me, I have always read, I actually can’t remember a time in my life where I’ve not had a book by my side. Even the few points where I’ve been in a slump I’ve still had books ready to pick up on my nightstand. My Mum is a big reader as well, although nowhere near as obsessive as me, and my Gramps, her father, was like me, always had a book in his hands and we would talk for hours about what we were reading. Whenever I visited him he would hand me piles of books he had finished with.

What book have you reread the most and how many times?

That’s probably a tie between The Catcher in the Rye and Wuthering Heights and I couldn’t tell you the number of times but it would be a lot for both of them. They are both comforting books for me and I randomly pick them up just because.

Mischenko’s Questions

What’s something unique about you?

My hair is pretty unique! Not only do I bleach it then dye it bright red, but I also have my entire head shaved on one side. For someone who is almost forty it’s a pretty unique hairstyle!

What’s a favorite book, movie, or song you enjoyed this month?

You know I watched the most recent Underworld movie last week and I loved it, I have been a huge fan of these movies since the beginning but I will admit to thinking after such a big break this one would be, well, pants. But it wasn’t.

What’s your favorite thing to do in your free-time and what do you love about it?

You mean other than read don’t you?! I love walking, I go out walking quite a lot and I also recently started going to fitness classes, including a circuit training class which is incredibly hard, but I love it. So it seems physical exercise is a thing for me right now.

My Questions

You can have dinner with one fictional character, who would you choose and why?

What do you enjoy most about blogging?

How many books are on your TBR pile at the moment?

AWARD: Real Neat Blog Award

The absolutely lovely Mischenko over at Read Rant Rock & Roll tagged me for this one. If you haven’t been over yet you really should she has the best blog, it’s a definite add to your daily rotation blog, with wonderful regular features, I’m particularly partial to her Wednesday Breakfast & a Book post myself.

The Rules

1. Put the award logo on your blog.

2. Answer 7 questions asked by the person who nominated you.

3. Thank the people who nominated you, linking to their blogs.

4. Nominate any number of bloggers you like, linking to their blogs.

5. Let them know you nominated them (by commenting on their blog etc.)

Mischenko’s Questions

What’s something you find yourself worrying about or thinking about frequently?

Money. I worry about money constantly. And this isn’t just because I’m broke these days, even when I had an amazing job and was on a top tier salary I worried about money all the time. I’ve resigned myself to the fact it will always haunt me.

If you had to change your name, what would it be and why?

Sîan, it’s what my Mum always wanted to call me but my Bio-Dad didn’t want me having an Irish name. So they agreed on me being called Louise Claire. When he went to register my birth he was drunk (not unusual) and he got my name around the wrong way so I ended up as Claire Louise. I’ve always hated my name, especially because it wasn’t supposed to be my name.

Are you doing a reading challenge? If so, where are you with it?

I’m doing three!

Goodreads of course, I completed it about a month ago, it was set at 100 which is the number I read last year. So I have extended it to 140, I am currently at 112.

Discoverability Challenge, this is one set up by a fantasy author I know, the aim is to read more female authors you’ve never read before (not necessarily fantasy). There is no limit just to grow the list. I’m currently at 47.

Flights of Fantasy – This is about reading fantasy through the year. I set my target at 50 for the year and I’m currently at 43.

What’s your favorite fruit and favorite vegetable.

Funny story I’m allergic to my favourite vegetable which is mushrooms! So my second favourite is Potato (I have a serious love of potato!) and Fruit Tomato or possibly Raspberries….that’s difficult..

Which fictional character would be the most boring to meet in real life?

Oh cripes, I don’t remember the boring ones…there are horrible one’s I wouldn’t want to meet but they wouldn’t be boring. Oh I will get shot for this but most of Jane Austen’s characters, pick any of them, they are so snoozeville. I wouldn’t want to get stuck in a room with any of them really.

What’s something your brain tries to make you do and you have to stop yourself from doing it?

Speak! I have a habit of saying inappropriate things at inappropriate times. I am getting better at stopping myself and thinking before I speak but it has caused trouble like you wouldn’t believe over the years.

If you could stand in front of the entire human race, what piece of advice would you choose to express?

That everyone is made of the same flesh and bone and need to find respect and love for each other and discard with the hatred.

AWARD: The Sunshine Blogger Award … Take 2

The very lovely Mischenko at Read Rant Rock & Roll nominated me for this one. It’s my second time around the block with this one, although my first time it had been combined with another award so it’s nice to have it all on it’s own this time. Go say Hi to Mischenko she has a fab blog!

Mischenko’s Questions

Is there something you can tell readers about yourself and your blog?

Erm…I’m quite obsessive about my blog, I have a diary to manage everything and I like all my posts to look perfect. I have a list of “house style” rules that I follow for everything and I follow them religiously. I blame all this on my background working on websites for different companies, it’s turned me into a complete obsessive!

What satisfaction do you get from blogging?

Loads, I enjoy it so much, it’s why I’m so obsessed with the small things.

How do you bring traffic to your blog?

This is one thing I don’t obsess over at all. I know how I could improve my traffic ten fold, but I don’t get hung up over it. I am quite happy being a mediocre blog in the background.

What’s something that you’d like to improve on this year?

My blog/life balance!

How do you get motivated to blog?

This is not an issue right now! If it was an issue, honestly I would rethink blogging.

Do you have any favorite books this year?

Yeah loads, it’s been a REALLY good year for books! Some that spring to mind are Godblind by Anna Stephens, The Ninth Rain by Jen Williams, Red Sister by Mark Lawrence, SkullSworn by Brian Staveley, and Blackwing by Ed McDonald.

Are there any songs you’re into right now, or music artists?

I don’t know much new music, I’m pretty stuck in my ways, but I’m really liking the new Stone Sour album, I love this band actually, and LOVE Corey Taylor (swoon!). Funny story with Stone Sour actually, they are touring here in December, I found out and leapt on it bought myself a ticket without even checking the date, I have never ever done this before, I always check dates first! Of course, it backfired because I’m not in the country when they are touring! haha!

What do you like to do with your spare time?

I love hiking, I go out almost every day for at least a few miles, reading (of course!), music is always playing around me and if you catch me at the right time I’ll be bouncing and rocking out aswell! I also spend a lot of time writing. I also love cooking, which is pretty lucky as I’m on a really weird and strict diet that involves cooking everything from scratch.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I have no idea! My life is totally different now to how it was five years ago so I wouldn’t even want to guess at five years time. So much can change I am testament to that.

If you could choose ONLY 5 subjects to read on other blogs, what would they be? (Books, music, film, health, etc.)

  1. Books
  2. Mental Health
  3. Music
  4. Jay’s 365 Project (Yes I’m giving him a subject all to himself)
  5. Food

Do you make money from your blog? If not, do you have plans to try in the future?

No, I have affiliate links but to date I’ve made precisely nothing from them, I think there’s a bit of money sat in the various affiliate accounts for them, but I’ve never hit the pay out limits…I’m THAT good! Honestly that’s not why I do it though! I know how to monetise the blog but I can’t be bothered to do a better job of it. If any of the affiliate links pay out I’ll just use the money to buy books…because you know, I need more books!

  • the questions you ask while nominating can be any three questions
  • if any of the questions asked are offensive or the nominee simply does not want to answer, the nominee does not have to answer them to earn the award

Jay’s Questions

What would you like bloggers to do more of that they aren’t doing right now?

Yikes, I have no idea, blogging is very personal so I don’t think there is one thing any blogger should be doing. It would be great if we could all meet up, but given how scattered around the world we all are that’s completely impractical!

Tell us 4 things about yourself, one of which is not true… and see if we can guess.

  1. I have a short story published in an ebook
  2. I won a national talent competition singing when I was 13
  3. I passed my driving test first time
  4. I used to play football/soccer for my school

Describe a perfect day that balances all the things you love.

I’d start the day with a walk in the woods, I like to start the day relaxed and having taken in plenty of fresh air. Walking for a couple of miles, feeling the mud under my feet, the wind in my hair always achieves that.

I would then check my blog, schedule any posts that are due before lunch.

I always have a salad or something along those lines for lunch.

Then for a few hours in the afternoon I write, I have two books on the go at the moment, although I’m definitely feeling more inspired with one than the other so would probably dig into that one. About 4pm I would pack up and dig into my book for some reading time, if the weather is playing ball that will be outside in the sun.

After dinner, I will hopefully be heading to a gig, I like my gigs loud and crazy. Big mosh pits lots of pushing shoving and sweaty bodies! Loud music and heavy riffs! It’s a good work out and guarantees I’ll lose my voice, get a few bruises and loads of great memories.

Stephanie’s Questions

What is your guiltiest pleasure?

Peanut M&M’s! I’m not supposed to eat them, they aren’t part of this diet I’m on as they have things in I’m intolerant to and they make me really ill but every now and then I just really need to be naughty and treat myself! They are literally the ONLY thing I cheat on my diet with and it’s only once every 3/4 months but they are SO good!

What is your greatest joy in life?

Being in control of my mental health. I spent so many years out of control, or rather being controlled by it, that now I understand it and how it actually works it’s amazing. I’m functioning so much better than ever before and that has opened the world up for me.

Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give your 13-year-old self?

Change GPs! Your GP is a hack and won’t help you go to a new one, NOW!
