TBR Topple – December 2017

Hi Guys, I’m a bit late this month because of my holiday. But I have five great books for you to vote on. I’m concentrating on trying to catch up on some of the books I have on what I call my “favourites” list this month, basically book’s from favourite authors, I won’t get through them all as there are about 50 books on that list, but I am hoping to make a dent.

As always the voting form is at the end of the post, and feel free to share the post to get others voting!

Surviving the Rachel - Aven EllisSurviving the Rachel by Aven Ellis
Bree Logan is ready to start her post-college life, but when she’s dumped by The One, unable to land a professional job, and has to move back in with her parents, she doesn’t think things can get worse until she ends up with her hair chopped into The Rachel, the infamous haircut made famous by the show Friends. Which is not good since it’s no longer 1994. But sometimes you have to go through challenges to get what you really need, and for Bree, could that include a different career and a romance with Jack Chelten, the boy-next-door?

Enforce - Rachel Van Dyken

Enforce by Rachel van Dyken
There’s two sides to every story…

And ours?
Isn’t pretty… Then again,
what’s pretty about the mafia?
Trace Rooks, that’s what.
But she only wants one of us, and I’ll kill him before I let him have her.
The only problem ?
We’re cousins .
And she may just be our long lost enemy.
Whoever said college was hard, clearly didn’t attend Eagle Elite University.
Welcome to hell also known as the Mafia where blood is thicker than life, and to keep
yours?
Well, keep your friends close, and your enemies?
Even closer…

I Only Have Eyes For You - Bella AndreI Only Have Eyes For You by Bella Andre
Sophie Sullivan, a librarian in San Francisco, was five years old when she fell head over heels in love with Jake McCann. Twenty years later, she’s convinced the notorious bad boy still sees her as the “nice” Sullivan twin. That is, when he bothers to look at her at all. But when they both get caught up in the magic of the first Sullivan wedding, she knows it’s long past time to do whatever it takes to make him see her for who she truly is…the woman who will love him forever.

Jake has always been a magnet for women, especially since his Irish pubs made him extremely wealthy. But the only woman he really wants is the one he can never have. Not only is Sophie his best friend’s off-limits younger sister…he can’t risk letting her get close enough to discover his deeply hidden secret.

Only, when Sophie appears on his doorstep as Jake’s every fantasy come to life—smart, beautiful, and shockingly sexy—he doesn’t have a prayer of taking his eyes, or his hands, off her. And he can’t stop craving more of her sweet smiles and sinful kisses. Because even though Jake knows loving Sophie isn’t the right thing to do…how can he possibly resist?

Dirty Little Secrets - Kierney ScottDirty Little Secrets by Kierney Scott
Ben McCoy is the Vice-Presidential candidate with the backing of the entire nation. His wife, Megan, is as close as she’ll ever be to living the American Dream – from inside The White House.

Until investigative reporter, James Emerson, comes looking for a story – and it seems the barricade masking ambition, sex and power-struggle rife in Washington D.C. isn’t impenetrable after all…

No matter how careful you are, secrets always leak out. Now, Megan has a choice, she can do as many First Lady’s have done before her, and stand by her man. Or she can opt for full disclosure. With a scandal so sensational it will whip the press into a humiliating political frenzy Megan, for the first time, holds all the cards.

They say all that glitters isn’t gold – but what happens when you realise everything you’ve ever dreamed of isn’t enough…

Quintessentially Q - Pepper WintersQuintessentially Q by Pepper Winters
“All my life, I battled with the knowledge I was twisted… screwed up to want something so deliciously dark–wrong on so many levels. But then slave fifty-eight entered my world. Hissing, fighting, with a core of iron, she showed me an existence where two wrongs do make a right.”

Tess is Q’s completely. Q is Tess’s irrevocably. But now, they must learn the boundaries of their unconventional relationship, while Tess seeks vengeance on the men who sold her. Q made a blood-oath to deliver their corpses at Tess’s feet, and that’s just what he’ll do.

He may be a monster, but he’s Tess’s monster.

Week in Review – 12 November 2017

It’s been another hectic week. After being in London again last weekend for Gollancz Fest (you can catch my write up here) I’ve been busy with volunteering, the blog, writing and trying to squeeze in some reading as well!

NaNoWriMo seems to be going reasonably well so far, I’m fractionally ahead on the word count and considering this book has a mind of its own and I’m struggling to keep it lined up with my outline I’m quite pleased I’m still churning chapters out!

I’m quite behind with reviews at the moment, I’m averaging about ten books waiting to be reviewed at any one time at the moment. So for any authors who know I’ve read their books and are waiting for the reviews, I am getting there but I’m reading quicker than I’m writing at the moment. For those whose books I’ve not read yet, my TBR is ridiculous right now and I’m reading as quickly as possible. I’m staying up until 2/3am most days reading to try and get through as many books as possible.

Next week I’m doing another radio interview about how I got into volunteering with the mental health walking group. I trained as a peer worker and walk leader to volunteer with the group, I’ll be talking about how I got to that point and how I use physical activity to help look after my mental health.

Here are this week’s book updates:

TBR Topple – November 2017

Hi Guys, it’s that time again for you to start voting on my next TBR read. I can’t wait to see which book you pick this month. I’m going on holiday at the end of the month so whichever book wins will probably be coming with me to find some sun!

Don’t forget to use the voting form at the end of the post, and share the post to get others voting!

Breakout - Aven EllisBreakout by Aven Ellis
While Texas is known for loving football, Lexi Stewart has always been drawn to the ice. Hockey is her passion, and she wants nothing more than to pursue a career in video editing for the home network of the Dallas Demons hockey team.

Lexi has an editing job for a corporate account, but it’s not fulfilling. Nor is her dating life, despite having the so-called help of The One Online Dating Service. Lexi knows there has to be more for her—on both fronts. She’s ready to take the next step, but it doesn’t seem like it’s going to happen anytime soon.

Until a flying puck changes everything.

Niko Xenakis is the new Dallas Demons TV producer, and he’s looking to make his mark in his new role and hopefully work his way back to his hometown of Baltimore. But once he meets Lexi, he might just change his mind on what he wants for his future . . .

But the road to love is never easy, complicated by the fact that they both carry emotional baggage from the past in their hearts. Can these two “breakout”of the past to find love in the present?

Cake A Love Story - J. Bengtsson

Cake: A Love Story by J. Bengtsson
-A reclusive rock star going through the motions-

Jake McKallister might have been a rock star, but he was no ordinary one. Surviving an unspeakable crime as a young teen had shaped him into a guarded workaholic, and he now lived his life trying to forget. If it hadn’t been for music and the redemption he found through it, he might not have survived. Career success came easily for him. Personal connections did not.

-A vivacious college student embracing life-

When outspoken and fun-loving Casey Caldwell was paired with the famously reserved musician for a friend’s wedding, she was prepared for the worst. What could they possibly have in common? She was a bubbly talker; he was a media-shy loner. His life was filled with music; she couldn’t carry a tune. She’d enjoyed a happy childhood; his was a well-publicized nightmare.

-Their worlds are about to collide-

Despite their obvious differences, Jake and Casey found each other, and her light balanced out his darkness. Would their love be strong enough to survive the weight of his tragic past?

Thirst - Claire FarrellThirst by Claire Farrell
Ava Delaney calls herself a hybrid – a living, breathing human who happens to have vampire poison running through her veins. The only thing greater than her thirst for human blood is her capacity for guilt. She does her best to avoid the human world, for everyone’s sake.

When Ava accidentally enslaves a human while saving him from a vampire, she realises she has to look for help setting him free. Despite her misgivings, she expands her world but finds herself dragged into a possible vampire civil war. With the help of some new friends with ambiguous loyalties, she tries to find a way to keep her human, and herself, alive.

You Had Me at Hello by Mhairi McFarlane
What happens when the one that got away comes back? Find out in this sparkling comedy from #1 bestseller, Mhairi McFarlane.

‘Think of the great duos of history. We’re just like them.’
‘You mean like Kylie and Jason? Torvill and Dean? Sonny and Cher?’
‘I think you’ve missed the point, Rachel.’

Rachel and Ben. Ben and Rachel. It was them against the world. Until it all fell apart. It’s been a decade since they last spoke, but when Rachel bumps into Ben one rainy day, the years melt away.

They’d been partners in crime and the best of friends. But life has moved on: Ben is married. Rachel is not. Yet in that split second, Rachel feels the old friendship return. And along with it, the broken heart she’s never been able to mend.

Hilarious, heartbreaking and everything in between, you’ll be hooked from their first ‘hello’.

Magic of Thieves - C. GreenwoodMagic of Thieves by C. Greenwood
In a province where magic is forbidden and its possessors are murdered by the cruel Praetor, young Ilan, born with the powerful gift of her ancestors, has only one hope for survival. Concealment. In the shadow of Dimmingwood, she finds temporary protection with a band of forest brigands led by the infamous outlaw Rideon the Red Hand.

But as Ilan matures, learns the skills of survival, and struggles to master the inherent magic of her dying race, danger is always close behind. Week in Review – 29 October 2017

I’m away in London this weekend so wrote this a few days ago in preparation, next week I will give you an update of what I got up to in the Capital but rest assured with ComicCon on the agenda I’m up to no good! I’ve gone in particularly excited about seeing Hayley Atwell, the Dark Matter cast, and Dani Filth.

This week I finished my book, all the editing and back and forth with beta readers and one particular very good friend who has answered far more questions than one person should ever have to answer about anything ever. I finally reached a point where I felt happy with my book. Well for now anyway! I’ve signed up for NaNoWriMo this year so next week I will be diving head first into writing book two. Heaven help me!

Here are all my book updates, I look forward to telling you what I got up to London next week…although I’m in London again next weekend for Gollancz Fest so heavens knows when I’ll have time to write this update next week!

#Review: Squeeze Play by Aven Ellis @AvenEllis

Description

Full of enthusiasm, recent graduate Hayley Carter is thrilled to be working for a non-profit organization in Washington, DC. Having spent a lot of her life in the background due to family circumstances, Hayley is eager to step up and be heard—and bring much needed change to her new organization. With romance on the shelf, it’s time to focus on herself and new career. Armed with a workbook to help her improve on a personal and professional level, Hayley is ready to become a better version of who she already is.

But will a baseball player for the Washington Soaring Eagles challenge her thoughts on not only dating, but the person she thinks she needs to be?

Brody Jensen is the new catcher for the professional team in DC. Baseball is everything to Brody and has been his salvation while growing up. Brody wants to make the most of his full-time shot behind the plate. Which means no serious relationships.

However, when a chance encounter leads him to Hayley, Brody finds himself wanting to know all about the beautiful blonde who has engaged him from the moment he spotted her. Together, they find themselves questioning the ideals they had set for not only relationships, but themselves, too.

When the cherry blossoms bloom in the nation’s capital, Cupid puts a squeeze play on Hayley and Brody. Will they be brave enough to love themselves and each other? Will love be called out? Or will their relationship be safe at home?

Review

I make no secret of being a huge fan of Aven Ellis’ work her hockey novels are superb and as quite an unusual Brit who loves hockey I always get completely absorbed into them. Squeeze Play is Aven’s first venture into another sport, one I’m clueless about, Baseball. But not one to be put off by her ignorance I dove in head first and I’m so pleased I did.

Hayley is a girl after my own heart, with a one-track mind on her career she has no interest in love, it’s a distraction she doesn’t need. After meeting Brody in what is potentially the most funny and sweet meet-cute I’ve ever read she realises there may be room for romance after all.

Aven Ellis pulls out all the stops with this book, it has some of the best scenes I’ve read in it, the romance was ramped up to maximum and the way these two bounced off of each other was heartwarming.  Hayley has some deep-seated insecurities but Brody not only recognises them he works with her to face them as she does with his.

Aven Ellis has well and truly knocked the ball out of the park with this one (like what I did there?!) and she has given us characters that you just won’t be able to do anything but adore.

A huge thanks to Aven Ellis for the eARC so that I could read and honestly review this novel.

Week in Review – 15 October 2017

Huge congratulations to my good friend, James over at This Is My Truth Now who’s debut novel was published this week. It’s called Watching Glass Shatter and will blow your mind.  You can pick it up from Amazon UK Amazon US.

My cold I was moaning about last week turned out to be Bronchitis, yeah I hid that well! So I’ve been sick all this week as well, had a pretty bad asthma attack on Tuesday night as well which is a kicker as I’ve not needed any asthma meds for almost two years. So I’m now back on all the inhalers and trying to learn to breathe again and stop coughing!

The plus side to having been so sick is I’ve read loads, I tried reading a fantasy novel but couldn’t concentrate what with all the coughing so I have been blitzing my way through the romance novels on my TBR. Always a silver lining!

Right, here is my bookish update for this week!

Week in Review – 8 October 2017

What a week! While grabbing lunch on Wednesday which is when I’m in the office for my volunteering job, I witnessed a knife fight, this happened less than a foot from where I was standing. Totally freaked me out.

Then the same day it took two hours to get home, it seems the buses just decided not to run, it took 45 minutes for one to turn up then it just crawled the rest of the way.

That evening I then got sick and have been wrapped up in blankets since. I’ve decided someone cursed me while I was out buying sushi for my lunch. I’m thinking I won’t buy sushi again!

In writing news, while my book is out with beta readers I have been working on an outline for the next book, I know I’m crazy. I had an idea that was really bugging me so I decided to start working on the outline to get it out of my head. It’s coming together nicely except for one issue that I just can’t seem to find a solution to. I had one of these with book one until I’d almost finished writing it so I may just have to do that again!

Right, here is my bookish update for this week!
