Description

In the tropical Florida heat, a man with deadly secrets falls for a lovely, inquisitive reporter…

After Luca Rossi lost everything to the Italian mafia, he used all his skills to write a stunning expose, and managed to put a key don on trial for his life. But now Luca must hide out on the Florida coast until justice is served in Italy. All is well, until he meets a lovely young American reporter who won’t stop asking questions about who he is. Soon he’s fighting the urge to hush her with a kiss … and much, much more.

Skylar Shaw took a job with a small Florida paper determined to make her mark on the journalistic world. She may spend her days writing up alligator scares and human interest stories, but when she meets a handsome mystery man on the beach, she’s not afraid to dig into his past, and the danger stalking him from across the seas. There’s just one problem … will her efforts help Luca, or bring danger straight to him?

Luca knows all too well the journalistic drive to keep digging. Can he trust his lovely Skylar to keep his secrets, or must he push her away to save both their lives?

Review

Luca is on the run, hiding in his Uncle’s Florida holiday home he has many secrets none of which he has any intention of sharing with anybody. When a plane crashes on the beach outside the house and he finds himself saving somebody’s life he doesn’t realise just how complicated things are going to get when local reporter Skylar starts digging trying to find out who the ‘good samaritan’ was.

This is a straight up girl meets boy, and attraction flares and builds novel, saying that it is deeply enjoyable. Luca’s backstory is riveting and adds a lot of tension that means you know something bad is going to happen but you don’t know which of the characters it is going to happen to or when.

Luca and Skylar are both extremely likeable characters, they are both deeply strong and passionate characters but are also very vulnerable and have things in their past which make them both wary of relationships of any kind let alone romantically.

There are times I find the lack of trust between them frustrating, I feel like people always reach a point where they start being honest and that got lost in here with these two dancing around that, whenever a truth comes out it gets lost in hypocrisy and I found it hard to stomach knowing if I was one of these characters I couldn’t stand the double standards.

Overall though this is a wonderfully enjoyable book and I went off and downloaded some of Tamara Lush’s earlier novels as soon as I finished this as I loved her writing style, the balance between the romance, erotica, and story was brilliant.

Sending a huge thanks to Tamara Lush and Neverland Blog Tours for the eARC so that I could read and honestly review this novel.

#BlogTour: Celtic Fire by Liz Gavin @LizGavin_author @XpressoTours #Review #Giveaway

I am pleased to be a part of this blog tour organised by Xpresso Book Tours. Today I’m reviewing this novel by Liz Gavin and there is also an international giveaway at the end of the post.

Description

This is a standalone, historical/paranormal romance. Its mature themes – violence, religious war, and pagan rituals – might not be appropriate for audiences under 18.

When ancient gods ruled and Druids kept Faith alive, the Celts thrived as a democratic, matriarchal society. Then savage Roman soldiers swept across Europe, killing and enslaving. The Celts did not succumb without a fight. Their Old Ways survived centuries of ruthless domain until another menace loomed: a tortured god worshiped in cold stone buildings. The sacred shores of Avalon began to drift away, the mists threatened to hide the island from mortal eyes forever.

Against the bleak backdrop of war, the gorgeous Scottish Highlands stood tall, sheltering its inhabitants from greedy invaders. Yet the reach of the eagle banners was long and the highlanders turned to the Goddess for protection. However, the sacred groves felt silent and grim as Avalon faded away. Once sad, pealing bells began to sound strangely comforting while the high walls of monasteries offered an alluring barrier from violence. Caught in the middle of this centuries-old war, a young High Priestess might be Avalon’s last chance.

Wise beyond her years and powerful like no other Priestess in her lifetime, Rowen had served the Goddess faithfully, forsaking her family and the company of her soulmate. When the Lady of the Lake asks for another sacrifice, it might be one too many for her scarred heart. How could she obey the Goddess without betraying Caddaric? Could she trust Eochaid, who embodied everything she despised and hated? Would she be able to fulfill her duties without losing her soul?

Caddaric had been Rowen’s companion in countless lives; but, now, they existed in different realms. Beautiful Rowen lived in the mortal world while sweet Caddaric remained in the sacred isle of Avalon, watching over her. Could he step aside to allow another man – a flesh and blood man – to become her protector?

Eochaid had sworn to protect the Old Ways. The rude warrior never quite understood his faith yet his loyal heart belonged to the Goddess. A gorgeous, fiery High Priestess was not in his plans. He would risk his life to protect Rowen; but, would the Goddess safeguard his heart? Could he defend the bewitching maiden from himself?

When stakes were so high that a simple mistake could cost their very world, a priestess, a Druid, and a warrior must learn to trust each other and the mysterious ways of the Goddess. Their success would save Avalon. Their failure would tear the island from the human realm forever, condemning it to oblivion.

Failure was not an option.

Review

Rowen is a High Priestess of an ancient religion in the highlands of Scotland. It is her responsibility to keep the villagers belief in the goddess strong, she looks after their health and wellbeing, trains apprentice priestesses and is well loved. She is also deeply in love with her soul mate, Caddaric, who is not part of this world but still in Avalon (their version of heaven), as High Priestess she is able to travel there in spirit to spend time with him but misses out on the physical aspects of a loving relationship.

When the Lady of the Lake tells Rowen someone will be coming to the village who she is to marry and have a child with for the future of their people, she reluctantly agrees to her mission. When Eochaid comes into the village with his warriors she instantly wants to dislike him but there is a pull, and he has had dreamt about her his entire life and knows they are destined for each other.

The beginning of this book is quite solid in the build up to the romance, in Rowen’s tug of war between her old love and this new love which is building in front of her. The descriptions of how she carries out her tasks as a high priestess are beautiful and draw you into the world wonderfully.

I felt uncomfortable by some of Eochaid’s earlier approaches to Rowen, they are very aggressive, these are two people who are supposedly destined, and I understand he is trying to convince her but I felt like some of the advances were just wrong and deserved a bloody hard slap across the face. Had I been Rowen he would never have been spoken to again at the very best. Story over. I think it was these situations that put me off the story and lowered my overall enjoyment.

There were several festivals celebrated in the books and whilst a lot was discussed as to what was done at the festivals, I didn’t really understand what the festivals were about and it would have been useful to weave in somehow an explanation of what the festivals were for.

This is definitely far more an historical romance with a mythological feel than a paranormal romance.  It’s an enjoyable read but not gripping and it didn’t blow my mind.

#SupervillainsFallInLove
Everyone wants justice.
That’s what Assistant DA, Lulu Lightly, tells me. “Cathedral City needs you to set things right,” she says. “To rid this place of corruption, once and for all.”
I’d like to rid Lulu Lightly of her clothes. And maybe her moral superiority. But mostly her clothes.
“I want you to fight the good fight with me,” she says.
Hell, yeah. I’m always up for a fight.
“We should stand up and be the voice of the people,” she says.
Sure, I hear voices. Sometimes I even listen to them.
“Figure out what’s good for the City and put it first,” she says.
Oh, honey… what’s good for the City is bad for the people. Trust me, I know. I’m Case Reider—insane Alpha, nefarious inventor, and I understand this town better than anyone.
Cathedral City needs me all right. Just not the way you think.
I’m not the justice you’re looking for, Lulu Lightly.
I’m still the same villain you left behind.
Only now… there’s something very, very wrong with me.

Excerpt

He stares at me. I barely recognize him. He’s so much older, broader, more intent. One gloved hand flies to my throat, the other covers my mouth as he pushes me back into the shadows of the thick stone columns that hold the arch over our heads. We round the corner, backing me into the secret spot I found for us so many years ago at the end of that one perfect night.

I’m frightened for a moment. Caught up in the accusations against him. In the law, and my duty, and my job.

But the heat of his hands and the urgency in his push are enough to keep me calm. Make me want him. Render me powerless to refuse him.

Did I ever doubt that I’d give in?

“Where did you go?” he asks, once we’re hidden from view, the only prying eyes those of the iconic statue set into the stone wall.

“Away,” I say simply.

“You’re back now?” he asks. Eyes almost pleading.

“I’m back now.”

He sits on the stone bench and it’s like… it’s like we’re kids again. At the end of that one night at the ball. But this time we are deliberate. Older. More experienced, but also more cynical.

My eyes never leave his as I hike up my dress, straddle his thighs, and nestle myself into his lap.

He hugs me then. Wraps his arms completely around my waist, pulling me in so close, I almost gasp for air.

Description

Princess Kaiya’s voice could charm a dragon.

Had she lived when the power of music could still summon typhoons and rout armies, perhaps Cathay’s imperial court would see her as more than a singing fool. With alliances to build and ambitious lords to placate, they care more about her marriage prospects than her voice.

Only the handsome Prince Hardeep, a foreign martial mystic, recognizes her potential. Convinced Kaiya will rediscover the legendary but perilous art of invoking magic through music, he suggests her voice, not her marriage, might better serve the realm.

When members of the emperor’s elite spy clan– Kaiya’s childhood friend Tian and his half-elf sidekick (or maybe he’s her sidekick?)– discover mere discontent boiling over into full-scale rebellion, Kaiya must choose. Obediently wedding the depraved ringleader means giving up her music. Confronting him with the growing power of her voice could kill her.

Songs of Insurrection - Blitz Banner

Excerpt

CHAPTER 1
Not-So-Chance Meetings

If marriage were a woman’s grave, as the proverb claimed, sixteen-year-old Princess Kaiya suspected the emperor was arranging her funeral. Entourage in tow, she shuffled through the castle halls toward the garden where General Lu waited. Given his notorious dislike of the arts, the self-proclaimed Guardian Dragon of Hua had undoubtedly envisioned a different kind of audition when he requested to hear her sing.

After all, she was dressed like a potential bride.

She buried a snort. The Guardian Dragon—such a pretentious nickname. The only real dragon, Avarax, who lorded over some faraway land, might make for a more appealing audience. A quick trip down his gullet would spare her a slow death in a marriage with neither love nor music.

And it wouldn’t matter what she wore.

The gaudy dress compensated for her numerous physical imperfections, but stifled the only thing that made her special. How was she supposed to sing with the inner robe and gold sash squeezing her chest, in a futile attempt to misrepresent her woefully underdeveloped curves? The tight fold of the skirts concealed her lanky legs, but forced a deliberate pace. At least the short stride delayed the inevitable, while preventing her unsightly feet from tripping on the hanging sleeves of the vermilion outer gown.

At her side, Crown Princess Xiulan glided across the chirping floorboards. Kaiya suppressed a sigh. If only she could move with the nonchalant grace of her sister-in-law, or even the six handmaidens trailing them. She dug her nails into clammy palms. Through this choreographed farce, appearances had to be maintained, lest she embarrass her father, the Tianzi.

Chin up, back straight. A racing heart threatened to ruin her already meager semblance of imperial grace. Eyes forward. Servants knelt on either side of the looming double doors, ready to slide them open. She forced a smile, with her best approximation of feminine charm. If only she’d lived before Dragon Songs had faded into legend, she could’ve sent the realm’s victorious hero fleeing with the song he supposedly wanted to hear.

An aging palace official stepped into her line of sight.

Singular focus on the doors broken, she blinked. Her fluttering pulse lurched to a stop as she blew out a breath.

His blue robes ruffled as he tottered forward with averted eyes and a bobbing head. He creaked down into a bow. “Emergency, Dian-xia,” he said, using the formal address for her rank. “The Tianzi commands you to greet a foreign delegation in the Hall of Bountiful Harvests.”

“Plutus?”

In one of the dining room chairs, he sat, waiting. Our eyes connected across the room, and his milky-white eyes froze me in place. For a second, everything slowed down for us, as I was transfixed by the fact that he was in my house, sitting at my dining room table. Just like I had imagined so many times before, only under different circumstances.

He watched me, unblinking.

“What happened?” Plutus asked softly, although his voice held an undercurrent of tightly coiled tension. “Callista, where is our son?”

The ache in my heart stayed with me as I fell asleep.

In my dreams, I woke up, laying in a courtyard with an ethereal light. I’d woken up here before, back when Plutus and I were traveling across the country. I hadn’t been back here since I got pregnant and Plutus had to return to his duties in the Underworld.

Familiar, strong arms embraced me. In those moments, time slowed down. Lips met mine in a crash of contradictions and unanswered questions. I gasped against them, not ready to get my hopes up. That this was really happening.

“Plutus?”

“If I could…” he whispered. “If I could, I’d hold him tight and never let him go.”

A moment passed between us. A reminder of what we couldn’t have.

“Callista,” he said gently. “Tell him I said hi. Please.”

I chewed the inside of my cheek, but I nodded.

“Callista,” he said, his voice low. “Callista, I’m so sorr—”

I awoke with a gasp on the cot. I grimaced, feeling sore in unfamiliar spots. Paul stirred on his bed, and I quietly laid my head on the thin mattress. I stroked a hand along his arm, watching every bit of him.

My son.

I leaned in to whisper into his ear. I might have been angry at Plutus for everything, but I did know that there were things beyond our control. I understood it, but I didn’t have to like it or accept it. I did decide to give Plutus this peace offering, to let him know that I’d be okay, at least for now. And I wanted to assure Paul, even if it was just his subconscious, that somewhere, his father was thinking about him, that he was worried about him.

“Daddy says hi.”

“I thought you would have fought harder.” He flinched at that, turning his head away. “I thought, if not for me, for Paul.”

“Callista…” he started, but I couldn’t let him steer this conversation anymore.

“Are you trying to push me away?” I asked. This time, my voice hitched in my throat.

He didn’t answer.

“Look,” I said. I slipped my hand out of his. I couldn’t touch him. Not now. Not when there was an ocean of broken dreams between the two of us. “The only way I’ve been able to get through this—any of this—alone, is because I believe that you’ll be there for me on the other side. And I can’t do that if you…if you…don’t love me anymore.”

Once again, he didn’t answer. He just kept his head turned away from me.

“Say something…Plutus…”

No answer.

Please?”

“Don’t say that.” My voice was low. “Don’t you ever fucking say that Plutus. Because I can’t move on.”

“Tell me,” he said, his jaw tight. “Tell me why you can’t move on.”

The tears started to fall afresh. How could he not understand?

“Tell me, Callista.”

“I…” I started. “I love you, Plutus.”

He stilled. A thousand different emotions conflicted across his face, mostly a mixture of regret, pain, and despair. And a bit of love. I was surprised to find that, considering that up until a few seconds ago, I believed he had fallen out of love with me.

He pulled me to him, his lips crashing into mine.

“Say that again,” he groaned.

“I love you, Plutus. I still love you.”

Guest Post

I grew up watching Hercules and Xena on TV, which was my first foray into the world of Greek mythology. In that world, gods and goddesses played with mortals like you and me. There were elements of action, and there were elements of drama. Most of all, I remembered it being fun.

Move forward about ten years. I was in high school, and I was an avid Japanese manga fan. Back then, I wanted to draw my own comics. I drew a character and labeled her as Hades’ daughter. I created an entire world around that character and a young adult story to go with it.

Since then, I’ve evolved that story many times, to where it’s almost indistinguishable from the original idea.

It’s never left me though, so one day ten years after that first drawing, and nearly twenty years after watching my first Hercules episode, I sat down to write Death is but a Dream. And Life is but a Nightmare continues that story.

I will say, that while I spent a good deal of time researching Greek mythology, I have taken a few liberties in order to create a modern tale. Some of the characters are reimagined. For others, I chose the source that met my ends, even though I found others that said otherwise.

And then we come to the royal family of the Underworld. A lot of mythology says that Hades, as the God of the Underworld, was unable to produce offspring because Death can’t create Life. Some texts even said that the Furies were his children.

I did find an article that talked about Plutus, the God of Wealth, who was often confused with Pluto, the God of the Underworld, who was also in charge of wealth. Another source said that he actually was Hades’ son, which I honestly found to be pretty cool and a great foil to myths about the Underworld.

My wheels started turning, and that character played a big role when I started world building for the Elysium Legacies.

The Elysium Legacies are nearly twenty-five years in the making. And it feels so great to share with you. Happy reading!!

Excerpt

Eochaid

The group of warriors follow my lead into the forest, dismounting and taking the horses to the water before lying down under the shady trees. Folding my hands beneath my head, I look upwards and watch the mesmerizing patterns of sun’s rays shining down through the thick foliage. Few are strong enough to make it all the way down to the ground. All of a sudden, the sounds and smells of the brave men around me disappear and the welcoming grove morphs into a dark forest. Although my heart thuds as fast as a galloping horse, these visions aren’t new to me. I’ve had them since I can remember yet they startle me every time.

In my mind’s eye, I stand surrounded by old trees in a forest I’ve never seen before, listening for footsteps and the clash of metal. I can’t see through the darkness, which isn’t brought on by night. It feels as if magically created. I can see only shadows resembling men. They fight for their lives, crying out their fear and hatred yet I can’t make their faces. It’s as if a translucent barrier separates the battle from myself.

Trying to move closer to the ghostly figures, I realize I can’t move and the foreign sensation chokes me like a vise tightening around my neck. A delicate hand appears upon my forearm. My eyes follow up a silk-clad arm until they meet a round face split up in a benevolent smile. I’ve seen this short, dark-haired beautiful lady before in my visions. Her light blue robes glow as if a light is shining from within her ethereal body. I try to bow my head in respect, but I still can’t make my muscles obey me so I drop my eyes instead.

“Eochaid, you must remember your promise to me. Whatever it is that awaits you in your journey, do not fail me.”

“I will not renege on my promise to you as it is the same as renouncing my word given to the Goddess Herself. You are Her Holy messenger, my lady. I am honored to serve you.”

“Very well. The road ahead is littered with perils both material and immaterial, physical and spiritual. You must be vigilant.”

“I shall be, my Lady of the Lake. May my loyalty to the Goddess and the Old Faith guide me through whatever hardships I might face.”

Blinking, I open my eyes as the graceful image is substituted by the frightened face of the cook, who’s shaking me by the shoulders.

“Sir, wake up!”

The distant sounds of metal, and the veiled silhouettes of fighting men, have been replaced by the loud noise of clashing swords and the vivid image of my brave warriors engaging in a fight for their lives with highly-trained Roman soldiers. I’m on my feet, sword in hand, and ready for action, when I glimpse an odd scene unfolding just outside the battleground, to my left. A small band of brown-robbed men kneeling in a circle, clutching their hands and chanting in Latin. What kind of weird sorcery is that?

Paperbacks by Liz Gavin

First, thanks to the awesome team at Xpresso Tours for putting this blitz together. Secondly, thanks to the host for having Celtic Fire on your blog today. You’re much appreciated.

This aspect of the indie publishing industry is much easier than it seems. Long before I became a writer, I was an avid reader. I’d read almost anything I could put my hands on. Granted, if the book were too awful I wouldn’t finish it. Still I would try to read it. I revered the pages of books to the point I was unable to write on their margins as some of my friends did when we were teens. (Yes, I’m old. I grew up reading books, not Kindle!!! LoL)

Anyway, the point I’m trying to make is that I viewed printed books as precious things. As I grew older, I learned authors worked hard before getting a break and being published. I discovered how expensive it was to print books, which added to my previous idea about how rare publishing books could be.

Consequently, when I started toying with the possibility of writing my first short-stories, I didn’t dare consider offering them as paperback. I pushed that thought to the corners of my mind and forgot about it. Until one day I didn’t remember to forget it. LoL

I must confess though that I chose to offer my books in print with a very small margin of profit mainly because it fed my ego. There, I said it! But in my defense, I had my reasons. You see, that little girl I used to be, who spent hours in the neighborhood library gawking at the endless shelves of precious books, still lives inside me. She jumped up and down and somersaulted countless times when I held a printed copy of my first novel. I told myself I had decided to sell printed versions of my stories because many people don’t like reading eBooks. Although that might be a fact, little Liz Gavin is the real reason. She is saying, “I’m a published author! I ROCK!” LOL

Thanks for stopping by today and supporting Celtic Fire. Remember to check out the other stops for more chances at winning the giveaway!!

Yet there’s always been someone missing from this little piece of paradise.

When a vengeful god kidnaps her son, she travels back to a world she barely understands to find him. A world where she must face humanity’s greatest enemies and her former lover. If she’s not careful, she’ll lose her soul again. And, maybe, even her heart.
