#Review: Split Feather by Deborah A. Wolf @Bard_Queen @TitanBooks @lydiagittins
Siggy Aleksov sees demons and talks with creatures she knows aren’t really there. Taken from her family as a child, she is dogged by memories of abandonment, abuse, and mental health issues. Siggy suffers from a hot temper, cluster headaches, caffeine addiction, and terminal foul language. She complicates her life even more when she saves the life of a talented assassin sent to kill her. Deciding to get the hell out of Dodge, Siggy travels to the Alaska bush to find out who she really is. The answer is more fantastic that she could have imagined-and she can imagine a lot.
I wasn’t sure I was doing the right thing taking this book on, I hadn’t got on very well with Deborah A. Wolf’s previous release but I told myself this was a different sub-genre being Urban Fantasy and so it was worth a try. I was so glad I did Siggy is a marvellous character who swept me into her world and carried me off on a journey with her.
Siggy is a normal girl, except she hears voices and sees demons, and everybody thinks she’s batshit crazy, including herself. When she saves a guy’s life only to then find out he’s been sent to kill her she accepts an invite to Alaska to find out more about who she really is.
Siggy’s journey into the Alaskan bush is eye-opening, to say the least, she discovers things about herself she could never have imagined. As she discovers a family she didn’t know she had and secrets about herself that are spectacular she becomes the person she was meant to be.
There is a rich cast of characters, a deep mythology tied into the story and lots of hilarity as Siggy’s wit and sarcasm cuts through some tense moments. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of this book, not a page went by where there wasn’t something important and gripping happening on the page.
I highly recommend this book to fans of urban fantasy, this is a new and original take on the genre and I’m thoroughly looking forward to the next book in the series.
Sending huge thanks to Deborah A. Wolf, Lydia Gittins and Titan Books for the ARC so that I could read and honestly review this novel.
