Music Monday: Delain – We Are The Others

This is a weekly meme I’ve picked up from Drew at The Tattooed Book Geek. It’s very simple, you pick a song on a Monday and share it! Never one to turn away from the chance to share my exquisite taste in music I’m loving taking part in this every week, so thanks Drew!

Delain are a band I love, I listen to their music almost daily. This song means a lot, it was written to fight back after the murder of a girl named Sophie Lancaster. Pretty much everyone in the metal community in Britain knows who she is, sadly. Her and her boyfriend were attacked in 2007 by a group of teenage boys, because of how they looked and she died as a result of her injuries.

There is now a foundation set up in her name to help others who are attacked and need help, they are campaigning to have this type of attack recognised as a hate crime, and for more awareness so that these attacks are reduced overall. The festival I go to, Bloodstock, has renamed one of their stages after Sophie as a permanent reminder of her, and many bands have got behind the campaign as well. This song really hits home for me.

I’m walking with Sophie tonight,
She lives in the air that I breathe;
I can’t get it out of my mind
How you were left to bleed
Was it how you dressed?
Or how you act?
I can’t believe
How they could act so violently,
Without regret,
Well, we will not forget
We are the others,
We are the cast outs,
We’re the outsiders
But you can’t hide us,
We are the others,
We are the cast outs
You’re not out there on your own
If you feel mistreated,
Torn and cheated,
You’re not alone,
We are the others (we are the others)
As simple as air in your lungs
As simple as words on your lips
And no one should take that away
No one should argue this
Now with our heads up high
We’ll carry on,
And carry out,
And we won’t let them get us down,
Wear us out,
‘Cause we are not alone
We are the others,
We are the cast outs,
We’re the outsiders
But you can’t hide us,
We are the others,
We are the cast outs
You’re not out there on your own
If you feel mistreated,
Torn and cheated,
You’re not alone,
We are the others (we are the others)
Normal is not the norm,
It’s just a uniform
(We are the others)
Forget about the norm,
(We’re the outsiders)
Take off your uniform,
(We are the others)
We are all beautiful,
(We are the others)
We are the others,
We are the cast outs,
We’re the outsiders
But you can’t hide us,
We are the others,
We are the cast outs
You’re not out there on your own
If you feel mistreated,
Torn and cheated,
You’re not alone,
We are the others (we are the others)
We are the others (we are the others)
We are the others
