Audrey Taylor has carved a living out of society’s fringes using her supernatural abilities and street smarts. Freedom—sleeping beneath the open skies and under the radar—is all she’s ever needed. But when an ancient council of witches discovers her powers, Audrey must submit to their training or be stripped of her gifts and her memory. Audrey knows better than to trust anyone, and she’s never worked well with others, so it’s just her luck to be assigned a withdrawn and irritable falconer as her mentor. Even more disturbing is her desire to tear through his brooding façade and bare the man beneath when she should be focused on escape.
Corvin Wright values the solace of his duties and only finds peace among the birds entrusted to his keeping. But the council no longer sees a use for his unique gifts, and his sanctuary is in danger unless he can earn his place by babysitting a fledgling witch. The task becomes daunting when his apprentice turns out to be wilder and more broken than any creature he’s ever cared for. Her fiery spirit and dangerous beauty challenge every ideal of the life he’s built. As Audrey wrestles with her captivity and the bonds of responsibility laid upon her, Corvin must find a way to tame her wild heart before she breaks his.
Bravo Gwen Mitchell, she’s rocked up and taken a spin on the urban fantasy genre which is fresh and hot and just bloody riveting to be frank.
Audrey is a strong woman, she’s had such a tough life, passed around foster homes, trying to manage having unusual powers that nobody else has. She’s learned to trust nobody and to look out for number one always. If she has to betray people she’s OK with that as long as she comes out of the situation alive and with all of her limbs.
But when she ends up having to learn how to control her powers properly from Corvin and his birds she starts to doubt her outlook on putting number one first. She questions if Corvin genuinely cares for her or if he is playing games, and she has to decide if she can betray the only person who’s been kind to her since she was a young child.
Seeing her battle with her emotions is tough, knowing she has to make these decisions is hard but she tries to keep everything about what is sensible and what makes sense. She has very valid reasons for making all the decisions she makes and even when she makes the wrong decisions we know why.
Corvin is a wonderful character, a strong and reliable man, he’s been a recluse for years who is learning to let that go because of Audrey. Falling in love with her, he’s trying to open her heart to him, to help her see there is more than running away, that they can be a team and work together. His confusion when things don’t work out how he expects sometimes is adorable.
This story is beautiful, strong and the final battle is epic, with magic flying out of the book so be ready to duck. I highly recommend this for fans and newcomers to the genre. An excellent read.
Sending a huge thanks to Gwen Mitchell and Xpresso Book Tours for the eARC so that I could honestly review this book.
