Happy Monday lovely readers! I’m so pleased to be bringing this tour to you today. I sat down to read this book for the review on a Saturday afternoon and I didn’t put it down until I was finished, this is pretty unusual for me, as much as I LOVE to read I don’t do one sitting reads because my meds affect my concentration and I literally just can’t do it, so for this book to hold my attention says a lot. So let’s get on with the post shall we?!
When her parents were murdered eleven years ago, leaving her physically scarred during the event, dragon shifter Astri never learned the identity of their killer. That is until he appears to her in a nightmare.
The powerful Duke Jorgen not only rules the city of Rivenna where she lives, he is also responsible for her parents’ death and for the disability she’s had to bear most of her life. When the chance arises for her to compete to become Duke’s assistant, she realises this is her opportunity for revenge.
But everything in Astri’s world comes with a price. Can she overcome her disability and make the Duke pay?
As soon as I read that Astri was a dragon shifter I knew I wanted to read this book. You all know by now I’m a sucker for a dragon! This book had far more depth than I was expecting though and while leaning more to the paranormal side than the fantasy as I’d expected it was a gripping read and a book I read in one sitting.
Astri was badly injured when a fire spell backfired as she tried to defend herself against the dragon mage who killed her parents when she was a young child. Left very badly scarred from this she is now living with her human aunt and uncle in the city of Rivenna. There was an almost Cinderella like feel to this part of the story with her relatives ashamed of who she was and denying their familial link, they made her sleep in the basement, had her running chores and she had to work to pay them back for paying her hospital bills all those years ago, a debt in all likelihood she had paid off many times over.
Astri is certain after prophetic dreams that the man responsible for her parents death and her disfigurement is the Duke of Rivenna, Jorgen, when the opportunity to compete to become his assistant comes up Astri see’s it as her perfect opportunity to get close enough to exact revenge. As Astri went through the trial we get to see her strength not only as a person but as a dragon, the last in her line. She is the youngest and the woman competing in this brutal competition and has to stand up to a lot of discrimination as a result.
Astri is clever and doesn’t always take the obvious route to completing her tasks, she puts thought into the best way through and takes into consideration the fact she is smaller and weaker in certain situations to find ways to overcome her hurdles. She also gets to know Jorgen who appears to want to take the time to get to know her and this makes her question what she believes. Could someone who is kind to her be the same person who tried to kill her.
There are many twists along the way and it is confusing to know who to trust for you as a reader aswell as Astri.
The writing is comfortable and enjoyable, it flows perfectly making the time pass quickly so that before you know it you’ve reached the end of the story and are craving the next installment. I do hope book two is as good as this!
Sending a huge thanks to Joanna Mazurkiewicz and RABT Book Tours for the ARC so that I could read and honestly review this novel.
