Home Field - Laurie Winter

#BlogTour: Home Field by Laurie Winter @lauriew_author @lolasblogtours #Review

Welcome to my stop on the Home Field blog tour organised by Lola’s Blog Tours. Today I have my review of this wonderful book for you which I hope you enjoy.

One year after her husband is killed in action, Julie Ellis is back in her hometown and focused on raising her young son. Then Reagan Harrison bursts into her life—a cocky, charming linebacker who leaves her off balance.

As a successful, professional athlete, Reagan believes he has it all. But after meeting Julie, he finds every excuse in the book to spend time with her. Despite his best efforts not to fall too hard, Reagan envisions a future with Julie, along with the little boy he’s come to love as his own.

While Reagan’s protective love begins to mend Julie’s spirit, she can’t suppress her continued deep devotion to her late husband’s memory. And when a letter arrives from beyond the grave, Reagan resolves to provide her with the answers she desperately needs to heal. Now Julie must choose either to keep her heart closed off or remove the lock and fight for a future with Reagan. Can a second chance at true love be just as sweet?

Julie has moved back to her hometown with her son after her Husband was killed in action in Afghanistan. Childhood sweethearts she doesn’t feel like she will ever move on from the devastation and it’s only thanks to her son that she has carried on functioning each day. When she attends a charity gala hosted by her Husband’s favourite football team she meets Reagan, one of their star players, and a rather handsome devil to boot. He becomes instantly besotted with her but winning the heart of a woman whose heart is shattered is quite a struggle.

This was a deeply emotional book, maybe more so because I had a friend who lost her fiancé in Iraq many years ago and watched her go through the devastatingly long process of having to let his memory lie before she was able to move on and meet someone new. It was one of the most heartbreaking things I’ve ever been a party to. I don’t think that kind of loss can ever truly be got over or explained and yet Laurie Winter has captured it so beautifully in this book while opening the door to a breath of fresh air with a new love for this wonderful woman who deserves so much happiness.

Julie is an exceptionally strong character but for all of her strength there is a devastating weakness where she has experienced this loss far beyond anything any of us could imagine. Her love for her son is pure and strong and she doesn’t think of herself at all in anything that she does.

Reagan has something special about him, a guy who has thought little about having a long term relationship and especially children. He’s always played fast and loose but when he meets Julie things start to change, he becomes completely enamoured with her and her family, inserting himself as far into her life as he can possibly get. He is a modern day night in shining armour seeing she needs rescuing from her grief and doing all he can to help her.

This story develops well but I felt that there were times when the expectations that even with how much he loved her would Reagan really wait around the way he does for Julie? She is sometimes quite mean and hurtful and I’m not sure that anybody would take that kind of hurt regardless of how much they love someone. I felt a few times he was a glutton for punishment and maybe he should walk away.

Overall, this is a beautifully told story, you definitely need the tissues for this one though, and the leading man is a stellar person through and through.

A huge thank you to Laurie Winter and Lola’s Blog Tours for the review copy so that I could provide my honest review of this novel.
