Liebster Award and The Sunshine Blogger Tag / Award
A big Thank You to the very lovely Avi over at Panic At The Bookstore for nominating me for this. These two tags seem to have got merged together here under one hate so the Liebster Award and Sunshine Blogger Award
I do enjoy taking part in these as a way of just sharing a little more about myself and books and blogging. I have put nominations at the end as it is a bit of fun….BUT…this is a bit of fun so there is no pressure intended and if you are not mentioned and want to take part you absolutely should!
Getting into the tags,
- Thank the person who nominated you and answer the 11 questions they’ve written for you.
- Nominate 11 people and give them 11 different questions to answer.
What was the book that got you into reading and how did you find out about it?
I’ve always read, the first book I know about being obsessed with (and this is quite funny) is Penelope Strawberry and Roger Radish by Jayne Fisher. My Mum used to read it to me every day when I was a toddler and I would apparently go nuts if she didn’t. We both knew every word by heart (my Mum still does). Books were always huge for us growing up. I literally don’t remember a time in my life where a book wasn’t glued to my hand.
What goals did you have when you first started blogging and have you achieved it?
I didn’t have any. My first blog was one I set up in 2003, blogging as a whole was really new back then, nobody really knew what they were getting into and what was going to happen. It was unchartered territory. I hit really lucky and within a year had made a friend who is still one of my closest friends even though we are thousands of miles apart physically.
What inspired you to start a blog and did you learn anything while blogging?
I originally started blogging because a friend and I had read an article in a marketing trade magazine about this new craze (remember it was 2003 blogging was really new) we both set up blogs to try it out. And have both swapped and changed blogs and topics as the years have moved on. What I’ve learned is that it’s easy to get comfortable with perceived anonymity but you’re never 100% anonymous so to always be wary and never say anything you wouldn’t be willing to say in real life.
Apart from reading, what other things do you enjoy?
I’m a massive heavy metal fan, that used to be my blogging focus in fact, I used to review albums, interview bands and I wrote for a few magazines over the years aswell. Living with bipolar I’m also really passionate about mental health and just trying to get people to see that there is nothing wrong with talking about mental health in the same way you would talk about physical health. I love gaming, although I’m not so great at it! I pretty much stick with Fantasy RPG’s and don’t stray out of my comfort zone!
If you could be transported to one bookish world, which would it be?
The Four Lands where Terry Brooks Shannara novels are set. So many amazing things happen in this place and it was the first fantasy land to really capture my imagination.
What is one thing you struggle with as a reader and one thing that you love?
I think my struggle is similar to most other readers, and that’s getting through my huge TBR! What I love is discovering amazing new authors!
Do you believe that books have the power to change your life? Have you read any such book?
Absolutely, it’s a bit cliched but The Catcher in the Rye changed things for me big time. I was 14 the first time I read it and going through a really rough time seeing therapists, having to deal with some really nasty family stuff and reading this book about someone dealing with similar issues to me really helped. My English teacher set me assignments that were different to the rest of my class and very personal to my situation but relevant to the book to help me work through my situation and it helped me understand how to properly analyse a book and how much a book can change your own perspective on life. I still turn to that book now when things get really tough.
Are you a sucker for happy books or one that leaves your heart broken?
I like both although I’m quite dark and like unhappy endings, everyone dies in the end, the bad guy gets away, that kind of thing. I read one recently where nobody survived and I was punching the air with glee. I loved it!
If you had the chance to live in either your reality or favorite fictional world, which one would you choose? ( I think I have read this in some tag before but I like this question so sorry for the copy haha)
Fictional definitely…they’d have dragons in my fictional world!
Do you believe in buying books or getting them from a library?
I would like to say library because without the library I would have had nothing to read as a child, but my local libraries (I’ve been to at least four) don’t have anything I read in stock, it’s completely impossible, and trying to order books is so expensive it’s actually cheaper to buy the books. So while I believe in the library I opt for buying them.
I don’t believe that all readers have to be introverted. It’s Friday night and there’s a really fun party going on in the neighborhood, would you go with your friends and attend it or stay home and read?
10 years ago I would have gone to the party, but now I would stay home and read!
