#BlogTour: Caraval by Stephanie Garber @SGarberGirl @HodderBooks

It is fair to say that there are times when you get invited onto a blog tour and the invite requires a happy dance, this was one of those times. When I read Caraval last year something special happened. I felt something like I had felt when I first read The Wizard of Oz as a little girl. I felt like there was something really special in the world and I was not only holding it in my hand but I needed to tell the whole world about it. This isn’t a book for a certain reader of a certain genre, this book is for everyone, it has something for every reader of every genre.

I’ve been given the first chapter to share with you today, something to whet the appetites of those of you who are still waiting for Tuesday’s release. I have also reposted my review here so you can see exactly what I thought, as I did originally post it a few months ago.

A mesmerising, magical and stunningly imaginative debut novel for anyone who loved The Night Circus.

Welcome to Caraval, where nothing is quite what it seems.

Scarlett has never left the tiny isle of Trisda, pining from afar for the wonder of Caraval, a once-a-year week-long performance where the audience participates in the show.

Caraval is Magic. Mystery. Adventure. And for Scarlett and her beloved sister Tella it represents freedom and an escape from their ruthless, abusive father.

When the sisters’ long-awaited invitations to Caraval finally arrive, it seems their dreams have come true. But no sooner have they arrived than Tella vanishes, kidnapped by the show’s mastermind organiser, Legend.

Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. But nonetheless she quickly becomes enmeshed in a dangerous game of love, magic and heartbreak. And real or not, she must find Tella before the game is over, and her sister disappears forever.

This book is perfection, I don’t say that lightly, it is every fantasy readers dream, a world which interweaves on itself to the point where you have no idea what is real and what isn’t anymore.

Scarlett is due to be married, an arranged marriage organised by her abusive Father to a man she has never met. When an invitation to Caraval arrives, something she has been trying to get for a long time, her sister Tella arranges for them to get there under any circumstances.

As soon as they arrive though, Tella disappears and “the game” appears to be centred around finding her. Stephanie Garber has created a web of intrigue, magic, and confusion. From chapter to chapter you wonder what is happening and how it is happening.

Yet despite the confusion running through your mind the story flows in a very easy way. The characters are easy to like, even the suspicious characters are likeable, until they aren’t! This is a bright and colourful world, which is visual and triggers your imagination.

Scarlett goes on an emotional and physical journey while she’s in “the game” trying to decipher what is real and what is the game. She spends time trying to learn what the secret of Caraval is and how to unravel it to find Tella. She needs to learn who to trust in a place where you can trust nobody.

The writing, world and people all come together to make the most wonderful book. This was a magical read, it touched me in a way that no book has in a long time. It is beautiful in so many ways, the relationships between Sisters and the way they will do anything to fight for each other is something I can relate to.

This is a book for any age, it’s a timeless piece and it has a wonderful cliffhanger that already has me chomping at the bit for book two.

A huge thanks to Stephanie Garber and Hodder & Stoughton for the eARC of this book in return for my honest review.

I'm BrizzleLass, I have Bipolar and have been dealing with mental illness in one form or another since childhood, I was first diagnosed with depression at nine. It's not easy speaking out about my experiences, some of them are extremely painful, but if I can help even one person then I have succeeded in sharing my story. This is where I talk about my mental health among other things that interest me. I enjoy walking, PlayStation, reading, heavy metal, and spending time with my Niece.

    1. It is unusual, normally with popular and highly rated novels I swing the other way and don’t understand why it’s so popular. I can be quite controversial! I hope you’ve had a lovely weekend.
