“I raise my chin as the buyers stare. Yes. Look. You don’t want me. Because, eventually, accidentally, I will destroy you.”
In a world at war, a slave girl’s lethal curse could become one kingdom’s weapon of salvation. If the curse – and the girl – can be controlled.
As a slave in the war-weary kingdom of Faelen, seventeen-year-old Nym isn’t merely devoid of rights, her Elemental kind are only born male and always killed at birth – meaning, she shouldn’t even exist.
Standing on the auction block beneath smoke-drenched mountains, Nym faces her fifteenth sell. But when her hood is removed and her storm-summoning killing curse revealed, Nym is snatched up by a court advisor and given a choice: be trained as the weapon Faelen needs to win the war, or be killed.
Choosing the former, Nym is unleashed into a world of politics, bizarre parties, and rumors of an evil more sinister than she’s being prepared to fight . . . not to mention the handsome trainer whose dark secrets lie behind a mysterious ability to calm every lightning strike she summons.
But what if she doesn’t want to be the weapon they’ve all been waiting for?
Set in a beautifully eclectic world of suspicion, super abilities, and monsters, Storm Siren is a story of power. And whoever controls that power will win.
Storm Siren is advertised as a young adult fantasy romance novel, even the cover is quite flighty and romantic, giving the impression of a more paranormal slanted novel. This is not what this novel is and I’m so glad I decided to give it a go. Storm Siren is a high fantasy novel with a very strong female protagonist.
We meet Nym as she is being sold in the slave markets, almost immediately her power, an ability to harness the weather and destroy an entire village, is revealed making her very useful to the people who are trying to win a war and could just use a weapon like her.
As she is taught how to control her power, something she has never been able to do, she learns what it is like to develop friendships, and she learns things about her past, how and why her family died, why the country is at war, and the motivations of people around her.
Nym has to make life and death decisions and the final battle will leave you speechless, stunned, and wondering how on earth she ended up in this position. This novel has vividly written descriptions forming a perfect world in your imagination.
This was a fantastic fantasy novel full of war, magic, death, and treachery. It had everything a fantasy novel needs and was an absolute pleasure to read.
A huge thanks to Mary Weber and Thomas Nelson for the ARC via NetGalley so that I could read and honestly review this book.
