Review: Unrivalled by Alyson Noël
Welcome to the party
EVERYONE wants to be someone.
Layla Harrison wants to be a reporter.
Aster Amirpour wants to be an actress.
Tommy Phillips wants to be a guitar hero.
But Madison Brooks took destiny and made it her own a long time ago.
She’s Hollywood’s hottest starlet, and the things she did to become the name on everyone’s lips are merely a stain on the pavement, ground beneath her Louboutin heel.
That is, until Layla, Aster, and Tommy find themselves with a VIP invite to the world of Los Angeles’s nightlife and are lured into a competition. The prize, or rather the target? Madison Brooks.
Just as their hopes begin to gleam like stars through the California smog, Madison Brooks goes missing. . . . And all of their hopes are blacked out in the haze of their lies.
I became aware of Alyson Noël when her Immortals series came out, I thoroughly enjoyed that series and when I saw she had a new series coming out and had the opportunity to get an ARC of the first book I had to grab a copy!
Unrivalled is quite a change from the Immortals series, there is nothing paranormal, and the characters are several years older, more worldly wise, and this isn’t a bittersweet romance.
But this still has the imprint of Noël’s easy to read writing, it still feel’s very much like Noël despite the distinct change in direction.
Set in Hollywood we are following three characters as they compete to win a nightclub promotion competition. It’s kill or be killed in this vicious fight to get the biggest and best stars on their guest list. But when the biggest starlet they are after goes missing they start to wonder if one of them actually did kill…literally.
Noël has created a murky world of backstabbing and mistrust. Our characters each go in different directions, but each blur moral lines while frowning on the others for their actions and questioning their own actions. At times they pull together while pulling away from each other.
This book is superbly formed, the mystery well built with the perfect cliffhanger at the end leaving you needing to read the next book. The chapter titles are song titles creating a really interesting playlist to go along with the book.
This was a thoroughly enjoyable and gripping novel full of intrigue, mistrust, fame, fortune, and aspirations. This is the murky world of Hollywood that the world doesn’t see.
A huge thanks to Alyson Noël and MIRA Ink for the ARC so that I could read and honestly review this book.
