Blog Tour: Review: Something Old, Something New by Darcie Boleyn
Welcome to my stop on the Something Old, Something New blog tour which has been organised by Neverland Blog Tours. I’m very pleased to be taking part and hope you enjoy my review. There is also an opportunity to win a copy of the book at the end of the post.
A heartwarming, giggle-inducing romance from Darcie Boleyn, just in time for the wedding season!
Will you marry me…again?
When Annie Thomas agrees to give her ex away at his wedding to his boyfriend, she thinks she’ll be fine. With her three children at her side, she can handle anything. Then she finds out her gorgeous first ex-husband Evan Llewellyn is flying in from his glamorous life in New York to attend as well!
An unexpected pregnancy ended their relationship and as she stumbles through the ups and downs of life as a working single mum – helping everyone else find a happy ending along the way – Annie refuses to believe their old and incredibly hot spark can still exist.
It’s only when she and Evan are forced to face up to the past together that they’ll discover if they can have their own happily-ever-after too!
Something Old, Something New is a feel good summer read that shows us the power of love and the meaning of family. Annie is our narrator and protagonist and she guides us through her life with frankness and humour. The book is based in the year before she turns 40, as her eldest child at 17 falls in love, her second ex-husband remarries a man, and her best friend and neighbour finally finds love.
During this year we see her grow closer to her first Husband and try to work out her feelings towards him, it is clear from the outset in this book that she has not lost her attraction to him but she is unsure if this is all there is to it.
The style of writing in this book took me some getting used to as it’s a little rambly as though Annie is actually talking at you, this added a sense of realism, but was quite different to the feel of books I normally read, however I did get used to it and start to really enjoy the style once I was used to it.
I also felt a few things were repeated a few times too many, like the assertion that Annie and Dex (her second Husband) were good as friends and their marriage wasn’t meant to work. Annie also spends most of the first half of the book moaning about almost everything and this takes a lot away from the romance aspect of the book.
The comedic aspects are great and while I often struggle with books which are focused around families, I enjoyed reading about Annie and her family. I felt her kids were very real and funny. I enjoyed their quirks and funny lines, and how they instinctively knew things without being told. There was a lot of laugh out loud moments around the family but there seemed such a focus on this and developing these characters that I felt the romance elements were rushed and underdeveloped.
I felt the ending was really sudden and unexpected and I felt a little disappointed not to see things tied up a little more.
Overall this is an enjoyable read for the wedding season, it’s full of hope and will make you laugh out loud as Annie navigates her life whilst trying to avoid boxer dog drool!
Thank you very much to Darcie Boleyn and Carina UK for a copy of the ARC to review this book via NetGalley.

About Darcie Boleyn:
Darcie Boleyn has a huge heart and is a real softy. She never fails to cry at books and movies, whether the ending is happy or not. Darcie is in possession of an overactive imagination that often keeps her awake at night. Her childhood dream was to become a Jedi but she hasn’t yet found suitable transport to take her to a galaxy far, far away. She also has reservations about how she’d look in a gold bikini, as she rather enjoys red wine, cheese and loves anything with ginger or cherries in it – especially chocolate. Darcie fell in love in New York, got married in the snow, rescues uncoordinated greyhounds and can usually be found reading or typing away on her laptop.
