Memories of Ash - Intisar Khanani

Blog Tour: Review: Memories of Ash by Intisar Khanani

Welcome to my stop on the Memories of Ash blog tour which has been organised by Xpresso Book Tours (follow the tour at this link). I’m very pleased to be taking part and hope you enjoy my review. There is also an international giveaway at the end of this post.

In the year since she cast her sunbolt, Hitomi has recovered only a handful of memories. But the truths of the past have a tendency to come calling, and an isolated mountain fastness can offer only so much shelter. When the High Council of Mages summons Brigit Stormwind to stand trial for treason, Hitomi knows her mentor won’t return—not with Arch Mage Blackflame behind the charges.

Armed only with her magic and her wits, Hitomi vows to free her mentor from unjust imprisonment. She must traverse spell-cursed lands and barren deserts, facing powerful ancient enchantments and navigating bitter enmities, as she races to reach the High Council. There, she reunites with old friends, planning a rescue equal parts magic and trickery.

If she succeeds, Hitomi will be hunted the rest of her life. If she fails, she’ll face the ultimate punishment: enslavement to the High Council, her magic slowly drained until she dies.

After finishing the first book in this series, Sunbolt, I was eager to know what happened next in Hitomi’s story so it was a good thing that I already had Memories of Ash on my Kindle ready for this tour! This book picks up a year on from the events of Sunbolt and Hitomi has continued her magical training with Brigit Stormwind in her cabin in the mountains. She has learned much and is becoming an accomplished mage when a mage hunter arrives and takes Brigit into custody to stand trial for treason. When Hitomi discovers her old nemesis Blackflame is behind the charges she sets about rescuing her teacher and so begins a new adventure.

Intisar Khanani has written a wonderful high fantasy novel in Memories of Ash, she has created a world full of interesting people and creatures controlled and affected by magic. The colours in places are so vivid they jump out of the page and the people are perfectly described and appear real and human. We are not only told Hitomi’s attributes and feelings but shown them. We see from her actions exactly the type of person she is and the same can be said for other characters in the novel.

This novel is fast-paced but still takes the time to describe the surroundings, sights, smells, and ensure that the reader knows where in the world they are. The world-building that was missing from Sunbolt is definitely present with Memories of Ash and the character building has gone into far more depth aswell.

This is a beautifully written novel and I highly recommend it to lovers of fantasy and magic.

Thank you very much to Intisar Khanani and Purple Monkey Press for a copy of the ARC to review this book via Xpresso Book Tours.

I'm BrizzleLass, I have Bipolar and have been dealing with mental illness in one form or another since childhood, I was first diagnosed with depression at nine. It's not easy speaking out about my experiences, some of them are extremely painful, but if I can help even one person then I have succeeded in sharing my story. This is where I talk about my mental health among other things that interest me. I enjoy walking, PlayStation, reading, heavy metal, and spending time with my Niece.

  1. Thank you so much, Claire! I’m thrilled that you enjoyed it so much. I learned from Sunbolt that my readers would like me to slow it down a bit and give them a little more of the world along with all the action–I’m so glad Memories of Ash worked well for you! Thanks again for this awesome review. 🙂
